Very private romantic cottage in the woods and only a three minute walk to historic downtown harpers ferry. Cottage has fish pond and gazebo as well as a front porch with river view (through the trees) and rocking chairs for maximum chill. Includes one bedroom downstairs and a one bedroom loft accessible by a spiral staircase under sky light. Living room has wood stove insert in fireplace as well as thermostatic furnace. Includes washer/dryer and fully equipped kitchen. You can hardly get closer to the rivers and historic downtown harper ferry, perfect for a romantic couple or four good friends. .
I am a retired restaurant design/engineer. I have spent most of my working life in southern California but also 15 years in Guam and Hawaii. After retiring I have spent the last 10 years doing adventures I didn't have time for when I was younger. I've thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Israeli National Trail. Also bicycled across our country three times. I've climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mt Fuji in Japan. I am an AT trail maintainer and boundary monitor and also volunteer at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Visitors Center in Harpers Ferry. I also spend much of my time in Metro DC with my fiance Taeko.
Gary Hill purchased this bungalow in 2012
Very private. Very romantic and very close to everything in Harpers Ferry.
Privacy and location
We enjoyed our short stay. The place utilizes all of the space well. The patio and garden area were lovely to sit in each evening with our dogs. Good food at Bistro1840! Gary was always very responsive and the place has all the bits and pieces you will need.
It was very peaceful. The house felt like something out of a novel. I had all the anemeties I needed. The town was picture perfect. Excellent stay, I would go back. Thanks again Gary.
The cottage was lovely and the location was perfect! A quick walk into town for sightseeing or food and a five minute drive to river rafting, zip lining etc. Gary thought of every detail a guest might need! I would definitely recommend this property to friends and look forward to another stay here in the future!
Hotels in the historic section of Harpers Ferry are nonexistent, but this little house served us perfectly well and has much more character than a hotel. It is an adorable house with everything you need and is just a short walk to the rivers, trails, National Park Service property and restaurants. Could not have been more perfect!
We liked and enjoyed the property and house even more than we'd expected. The back deck and pond provided a wonderful place to sit and relax. The front porch allowed us to sit outside even during a brief rain storm. The house was cozy, the kitchen was well-equipped. We wished there was a queen-sized bed, but managed in the double. The upstairs bedroom (another double bed) was cute and cozy too, even though we didn't use it. We enjoyed seeing and reading about Gary's hiking and other aspects of his life reflected in some of the framed articles and certificates, and his collection of books caught our interest. We were able to walk into Lower Town and through the park while leaving our car in the drive. The train was closer and louder than we expected, but since we knew to expect it, we didn't let it bother us. We loved the house and the outside seating areas and expect to return again for a longer vacation.
The house was perfect for our first family vacation with our infant son and our dog. The backyard was a beautiful retreat at the end of the day, and we could easily walk to town and to several hiking paths.
