Victoria charm at the center of Shelter Island life
As it appears on-line, this home is a Victoria charmer with good size bedrooms and many porches and rooms for family to gather. The third and fourth bedrooms are a double room with a double bed for parents in the back room, and 3 twin beds up front--which could be ideal for some families with 2-3 kids sharing the home with one or two other families/couples. Kathryn and Dave could not have been more hospitable, nicer people to make arrangements with. The beach club was a great place for us all including a great playground (for little ones) to hang out, swim, lunch, and do 'sundowners' (adults). My lack of five stars is because the property is not in tip-top shape (which was fairly fine with me as a summer rental), and often felt a bit like camping out in an antiques shop. The second bathroom was off the kitchen away from bedrooms, and without a sink of its own. The kitchen was not one from which I would want to be making breakfast, picnic lunches and cooking dinner each evening. (If you go on vacation to eat out--please ignore this last comment!) This was, overall, to be clear, a delightful place to stay (10 days for us) in the summer. The porches off the two main bedrooms with large double doors meant we did not use A/C (which was there) but instead, we could relish the silent evenings and breezes and the birds and sunlight each morning. The house is walking distance to a) the North Ferry, b) the Post Office and two hardware stores, c) a few restaurants (Isola was especially good!), and d) the iconic Marie Effiel's for coffee, lunch, charcuterie, and top shelf cheeses and cooking supplies. This home would be particularly ideal if you are coming from NYC, take the Hampton Jitney (lux bus), and don't want to bother with a car rental. for a long weekend.

Lovely home, centrally located - wonderful hosts
My family of four stayed at this beautiful home on Shelter Island located in the center of town - convenient to everything - we walked to breakfast, the Chequit Inn, Post Office, Italian restaurant, Redding's, the golf course and Dering Harbor Marina. Kathryn and Dave were great hosts. The house was immaculately clean, the bedrooms were huge with comfortable beds. Nice bathrooms and outdoor shower as well. The best thing about this house is the Shelter Island Beach Club, and the two Heights tennis courts which were included in our reasonable rental rate (two kayaks too). Highly Recommend - perfect escape, in a really gorgeous historic large home with gracious hosts who attended to every question and suggested many local resources and eateries for us. We were on Shelter Island for a wedding, but we will return for a visit for sure - this house is a winner.

Great House - Shelter Island is an Incredible Vacation Spot
Beautiful, immaculate, charming, historic house. Kathryn and her husband were very thoughtful and friendly and provided very useful ideas for us to explore and have a great time on the island: farmer's market on Saturdays, Sylvestor Manor, best fish market, best ice cream...My husband walked across the street every day and played golf, and I took the kids one block to Sunset Beach. Eagle Deli and the Tuck Shop are within walking distance for snacks and treats. Sunset Beach is gorgeous - Shelter Island is a must see. Bedrooms are charming and romantic, huge kitchen for guests and cooking up lobster and fresh farmstand produce for dinner. We'll be back for sure. If you are looking for a peaceful vacation, well priced with thoughtful owners in a lovely historic farmhouse on the golf course and one block from the most beautiful beach on Peconic Bay, this is it. The front porch is huge and inviting. We had cocktails on it every night. The three kayaks, beach chairs, and beach umbrella were a nice touch. Highly recommend.

Cozy Charm
House reminded me of a cozy, English cottage I stayed in a few years back but better because it was bigger, equipped with all the modern necessities and located on this beautiful, serene and QUIET island in walking distance to the water and a picturesque beach. Outdoor shower and front porch made for many a lazy evening spend relaxing and unwinding. Owner was very sweet and made every effort to insure my stay was comfortable and provided excellent suggestions for activities, where to eat, shop, sightsee, etc. Added bonus was the three kayaks of which my husband and I took full advantage.

A charming, relaxing stay in a well-appointed home
My wife and I arrived to find the home immaculately decorated and clean. The kitchen was roomy with beautiful accents and our beds were brand new! My wife especially appreciated the fabulous porch swing overlooking all the lush landscaping surrounding the property. We used the BBQ for a delicious meal one night as we gazed out onto the fenced in half-acre property. The location was perfect - just far enough away from the hustle-bustle, but a lovely 10 minute walk to town and only 5 minutes to the beach. Despite being a "historic" home, it was well maintained and had all the comforts of a home away from home.

We love Shelter Island and this is our dream house. There is no greater pleasure than waking up to the many birds that live on the property, gardening early in the morning, walking to the beach club for a quick refreshing swim, and then preparing a delicious dinner with fresh produce from the many island farmstands and fresh seafood just caught in the Bay. Shelter Island is a beautiful place and the Heights is a relaxing, centrally located, delight. It's lost in time - and that's how we prefer it. Yet, wifi connects you the the world and the Hampton Jitney is a six minute ferry ride away for meetings or work in Manhattan. The Shelter island Yacht Club is a five minute walk from the house - great for dinner or cocktails and incredible sailing program for children.

Why they chose this property

Shelter Island is the very last unspoiled part of Long Island, NY. Our family has been on Shelter Island since 1929 and we summered here as babies with our grandparents. This home is an authentic Victorian Gingerbread, built in the 1880's - yet upgraded and modernized (new roof, furnace, central air)

What makes this property unique

Town Goat Hill Golf Course is 5 minutes away
Heights Beach Club is two minute walk away
Town is steps away - The Chequit Hotel within sight of the house. We are very centrally located - yet Spring Garden Avenue is very, very quiet.
The Outdoor Shower is great after the beach
Our wraparound porches are lovely - and nice for dinner (in the screened porch) and cocktails outdoors. Welcome!
