This beautiful mansion is located on Esplanade Ave. a couple of houses down from Degas House. The rental includes the entire downstairs of the main house (2,000 sq. feet) as well as the back cottage (500 sq. feet). There is a small kitchenette in the cottage, two bathrooms in the main house and one in the cottage. No kitchen in the mainhouse. House also has internet connection, cable, and off-street parking. There are two suites in the main house and a private room with a sofa bed. There are also several sofas in the living room. There is a bedroom loft in the cottage and a small living room. Very walkable and historic area.
Our group really enjoyed our stay at the Historic Esplanade Mansion. The house had wonderful character, the rooms were clean, and our host had some delicious food in the fridge to welcome us. We also found it to be well-situated. Thank-you Allen for letting us stay in your amazing home!
My husband and I stayed here with three other couples for JazzFest 2016, and it proved an excellent choice. It is within walking distance to the fairgrounds, and there are buses that pick-up directly across the street and drop-off a couple of blocks from the entrance. We all had separate rooms and bathrooms (a huge plus!) One couple had the cottage behind the house, which offered the most privacy. The three rooms in the house are all interconnected, so not very private, but comfortable and clean. One of the bedrooms is actually a sun room with a daybed and trundle. Also, there are tenants upstairs, who were very quiet and practically invisible. No problem at all, though I might have liked to know that in advance.
There is no kitchen, per se, but there is a standard refrigerator, counter space with a microwave and a sink in the cottage that worked out fine for our breakfast and snack needs. Also, there is a coffee maker and small refrigerator in the house, which was stocked and helpful. Not a situation where you could make meals, but you could order in or warm-up leftovers. The restaurants are within walking distance (about 12 blocks or 15 minutes), and they were excellent. Since they are right by one of the entrances to the fairgrounds, expect big crowds at the end of the day. A couple of them take reservations, so check in advance if you're planning to have dinner in one of them. If not, you can take a bus or taxi to the quarter. Some of our friends walked there during the day.
There are two porches and space in the back where we gathered to visit and have our breakfasts. It felt like we had our own "private" backyard, even though there are houses and neighbors all around. There is gated parking with plenty of space, and we felt very secure leaving our cars there even when we were away. I would definitely consider staying here again. Oh! Google Maps has this house located between Dupre and White Streets...wrong!!! It's about 3 blocks east of Broad, near Tonti. Closer to the Quarter, farther from JazzFest.
