My husband and I stayed at Gabe's Getaway for a week for our 15th anniversary. The apartment is clean, well kept and in a great location -- away from the hustle and bustle, but close enough to everything we went there to see. Valerie and Brad are wonderful hosts and we really enjoyed getting to know them and chatting with them. They were never intrusive, but always there if we needed anything. The wi-fi at the rental was great, which pleased my husband so he could do some work while we were away! The property and surrounding area is absolutely beautiful. I really enjoyed walking my dogs down the road each morning and then sitting on the deck w/ a cup of tea before starting our adventures for the day. There were plenty of brochures for things to do in the area and Valerie provided us with a great list of links for places to visit (you must check out Cross Keys Vineyard while you are there -- just amazing!). I am looking forward to visiting again when we are back in that area.
My wife and I stayed at Gabe's Getaway for 4 nights, and we absolutely loved it! The cozy apartment is located above a stunningly picturesque barn (which I'm calling a barn-partment! lol). The whole property sits on a large private plot of land that has the main property and some very friendly horses. If you happen to arrive at night, you'll be greeted by a lighted fence that brings you to the barn, which was also lit up and decorated for autumn!
We were greeted immediately by Valerie who was so nice and very attentive. We were given some carrots to feed the horses who came right up to the fence to greet us as well. Getting to learn about her farm and the horses was a really neat experience. She showed us to the upstairs "barn-partment" that had a fairly decent sized living area, a small kitchen, and a bedroom and bathroom. Everything was very clean. You also have a Keurig machine with coffee, hot chocolate, and even to-go cups!
This place is a great size for couples, but I could see it getting a little cramped if there were more than 2 people. The sofa folds out into a bed. You have free wi-fi all throughout as well as cable TVs in both the living room and bedroom. They also provide a huge assortment of DVDs, board games, and even a Sirius satellite radio speaker system.
The bedroom also has a large desk and chair for getting some work done but also includes plenty of brochures and information available for things to do in the area. However, we didn't even need to refer to the brochures because Valerie is so incredibly knowledgeable about things to do. She was even kind enough to text us several different suggestions for attractions, restaurants, hiking, vineyards, and breweries to visit.
Overall, we had an amazing time and we would highly recommend checking out Gabe's Getaway if you're looking for a quiet place to stay. It's very centrally located to almost everything in Shenandoah with everything being about 30-40 minutes away by car. It's remote enough to be relaxing for those looking for a rustic experience but has a lot of modern conveniences that you would come to expect from an apartment in the city.
A wonderful place to spend a relaxing weekend. The hosts are wonderful people who really make you feel at home!
Gabe's Getaway was a very nice place for us. It was actually like the photos depicted and the location facilitated our hiking & sightseeing in the nearby George Washington & Shenandoah National parks. Its a peaceful and quiet property to include the horses!! The owner Valerie was very attentive to our needs and her accommodating attitude enhanced our stay. We'll be back!!
Beautiful facilities, private entrance and balcony! The owners have literally thought of everything from a wagon full of grilling and fire pit supplies to movies, a soft sided cooler, kitchen tools, flashlights, and a variety of other household items. The space is so comfortable and peaceful. We enjoyed walking the paved drive in the morning, checking out the chickens, reading on the balcony, swinging, and even washing the dishes in the farm house sink while watching the horses. We will definitely be back!
Brad and Valerie met us with open arms and hearty conversation when we arrived. It was so nice to feel so welcome! The property is gorgeous and it was wonderful to also spend time with the horses. I'm glad they provided carrots to give them because all I ever want to do is spoil animals! The horses were so sweet and so kind, neither my husband nor I felt uncomfortable around them! Valerie and Brad also have chickens and I look forward to getting some farm fresh eggs in the future. In the evening, there is a fire pit you can use which is fantastic or you can sit on the deck of the get-a-way itself and listen to the nearby cow chorus and bug symphony. It was fun listening to them and looking up at the Milky Way!
As for the actual accommodations, we loved it! It was very homey, well-furnished and comfortable. Everything you could possibly need (including WiFi!) was available. I loved all the pictures of Dawn, Gabe and Lane spread on the walls. We never once had an issue with noise at night from the horses being in the barn, no smell permeating through or anything. The apartment above the barn is tightly sealed. I loved having the brochures for local to-dos to look through and take with us. I even left a few myself!
We would stay again? Absolutely! We're excited to see the area throughout the seasons.
Many attractions to visit! New market battle field, endless caverns, luray caverns, shenandoah caverns, grand caverns, cross keys vineyard, blue stone vineyard, shenandoah vineyard, barren ridge vineyard, white oak lavender farm, luray reptile center, back home on the farm (corn maze, pumpkin patch), skyline drive, skiing (massanutten and bryce), golfing (shenvalee, pack saddle, heritage oaks, and lake view), james madison university, bridgewater college, eastern mennonite university, and much much more!
