Welcome to the Great Plains House. Our family has enjoyed this home and farm since 1947 (at least my grand parents). I hope your visit is relaxing and fun. The original section of the house was built in 1840 and the big room was added in 1970. I hope you love the farm and our house as much as we do.

About Tjark Aldeborgh

My grandfather purchased Herring Creek Farm which included this property in 1937. While he sold the majority of the farm in 1969, his children, and subsequently his grandchildren and beyond, have always considered 'The Farm' a place where we can relax and reinvigorate themselves. Our family has opened up the opportunity to your family to enjoy everything we have enjoyed for over 60 years.

Why Tjark Aldeborgh chose Edgartown Area

Herring Creek Farm, located on a peninsula surrounded by Edgartown Great Pond to the northwest, the Atlantic Ocean on the south and Crackatuxet Pond on the east, has a rich agricultural history dating back nearly 300 years. It was once a portion of the Great Plains Farm, assembled by Ronold Wild in 1942. Wild sold a sailboat, which he and his wife Dorothy had used to reach the Island, to buy a portion of the land from Jack Weihl. Over a two year period, Ronold and Dorothy purchased additional acreage to complete the final property of 250 acres, 80 of which they had under cultivation. The Wilds grew potatoes for the summer market and hay for the winter market. The story goes that they purchased their first cow from Macy's.

The farm was sold to Benjamin Harrison Cohan, a wool merchant, in 1947. He acquired additional acreage, expanded the barns and raised Holstein cattle for milk production. Mr. Cohan started the Martha's Vineyard Dairy Cooperative on the island during that time. During the 1950s the Great Plains Farm was the largest dairy farm on the Vineyard, and in 1956 it led the state in Holstein Friesian lactaction averages. Also in the mid-1950s the farm was the recipient of the top county award for outstanding agricultural achievement and practice in soil conservation.

Once again the farm was sold, this time to the Wallace Brothers in 1969. During their tenure, the farm's focus was beef cattle. Donald McGuire, who ran the operation for many years, stated the farm raised up to 200 head of Hereford cattle, grew corn, oats and hay, and some vegetables. It was the Wallace brothers who re-named the property Herring Creek Farm - the Great Plains had, with the passage of time, largely filled in with trees and modest development.

For Adventurous Travelers This Place is Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for two and a half weeks in late August. During our stay we were visited by a variety of family members: daughters, sons, sisters, father and mother. Everyone loved staying here. The listing, as described, was accurate. Important: if you need totally NEW everything, this place is NOT for you. However, when my wife and I travel we love the quirkiness of things with character, and that includes old homes. Every room is different, second floor ceilings are somewhat low, the bathrooms aren't what you'd get in a new Vegas hotel, but we loved our stay here!

The house was clean, and we enjoyed ocean breezes morning, noon and night. The owner is great, friendly and always available . Hanging out around late afternoon/early evening outside in the Adirondack chairs, we enjoyed cocktails while watching the small aircraft takeoff and land at the Katama grass airstrip nearby. It was totally quiet here, except for wind, so that's quiet. What's not to like about access to a private beach? In fact, the beach was amazing. And for anyone who preferred calmer seas, there's also access to a protected, huge pond, where waves, tides and currents are not a factor. You're a short 10-minute drive to Edgartown, and the best farmer's market on the Vineyard: Morning Glory Farms.

Beware of misleading photos

  • 1 of 5

Worst experience ever in MV. The house is overly lived in and has a smell of cat urine and the furniture has many rips tears and holes from cat claws. The patio "furniture" considts of broken rusted old neglected mismatched pieces. The ceilings upstairs are very low and the bathrooms are rank. The entire home needs updating throughout and really should not be rented. Unfortunately the people that live on the land can't develop the baluable patcel because it is a landmark. This is why they need to rent this old ramshackle farm out , while they live above a garage that is spitting ddistance to the front door of the house. The grounds are pretty enough but beeare the tall grasses shield millions of ticks which my kids came home with every day clinging to their skin. Worst waste of $7000 ever and really made me very wary of ever booking again without a thorough inspection prior. Stay far away folks.

Lots of New Family Memories & Adventures...

  • 4 of 5

We thought the house was the perfect vacation home for such a large extended family. Not only was there enough room for everyone and to meet everyone’s sleeping needs (e.g., snoring), but there was ample recreational area both inside and outside of the house. The farm and general outside land was amazing – the views, tranquility and fun (I especially loved being able to watch fireworks from a distance so the kids could enjoy it without fear of the sound, but still enjoy the festivities!!) it provided were unmatched in any other house I’ve rented. Having the private area on the beach/pond were also a bonus.
