About the property

Cozy 2 Bedroom Cabin on 11 acres, short walk from Stissing Lake

Quaint cozy cabin located in the Hudson Valley, approx 90 miles north of NYC on our 11 acre property on a 125 acre lake at the base of Stissing Mountain. We use the main house many weekends in the summer but the guest cabin (see photo located down the driveway from the main house walking distance to the lake) is available rent from early May through Halloween.

Stissing Lake Guest Cabin is a very rustic country cabin with 2 bedroom, 2 baths (one with clawfoot tub), basic kitchen (with pots, pans, dishes), hardwood floors throughout and vintage country furnishings. One bedroom has a antique spindle double bed, the other bedroom has twin and double beds.

We have a couple kayaks, a canoe, fishing rods, swimming platform, dock, a couple adult and children's bikes, wooden swingset, all part of the rental package shared with the main house.

Stissing Lake is a gorgeous swimming lake. You can swim from the dock into the open waters to the swimming platform which is shared with the main house.

Since we do have vegetable garden, flower garden and a dozen chickens from time to time, we have learned from past experience it might not be for those guests with severe allergies. The cabin does not have heat and is closed during winter.

About Antoinette Bruno

I run a food magazine and have 2 children.

Antoinette Bruno purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Antoinette Bruno chose Pine Plains

20 years ago we looked in the country for a place to call our own. We married here and raised our two children.

Stissing Lake offers an ideal place to relax, lots of room to roam and indulge in the magic of nature. Enjoy spring blossoms, summer fun in the water or the gorgeous fall foliage. Hike Stissing Mountain, picnic on the lawn, kayak or paddle boat around Stissing Lake, swim without the distraction of motorized boats, fish for Bass, watch the swans and turtles on the lake or birdwatch at Thomson Nature Preserve.

What makes this cottage unique

Stissing Lake is our little slice of heaven.

Beautiful property!

  • 4 of 5

Antoinette was so kind and helpful with all of my questions. Because no one was in the main house during my stay, I was able to sit on the Adirondack chairs for hours and stare at the lake every day of my stay. It was peaceful and lovely! And there is even a nice hike to Thompson Pond within walking distance of the house! Lots of nearby towns that have beautiful hiking and plenty of things to do outdoors. And great farm stands all over the place!

Most wonderful vacation ever!

  • 5 of 5

The location, amenities, and services were superb. We enjoyed the charming property, taking advantage of all the activities available, especially the swimming and hiking. We visited the very charming surrounding towns and restaurants. We also dined at the house on the porch taking in the breathtaking view and romantic setting. Would highly recommend for your next vacation.

Cottage was charming !

  • 5 of 5

We just loved the cottage and the area. The lake is so beautiful with boats to use and wonderful swimming. We hiked a couple of miles all around the lake and so enjoyed the beauty of the grounds. The surrounding towns were so fun to visit. Can't wait to return go antiquing and relax in the adorable cottage.

Nice setting--shabby and not very clean inside

  • 2 of 5

As others have shared, the setting is gorgeous--though the cottage itself is not on the lake and there's nothing much to look at out of any of the windows. Beyond that, while the owner and others do describe this as something of a basic cottage, there are some intrinsic issues that had I known, I would have stayed elsewhere. First there is the issue of cleanliness. The place was not at all well cleaned--even with a significant additional cleaning fee. The refrigerator door handle looked dirty and was tacky to the touch. Baseboards and a board that ran just behind the kitchen sink were quite obviously dusty and dirty. A giant dust bunny twirled around the 2nd bedroom when I first walked in to take a look. The dishes in the cupboard obviously needed washing before use--which was pretty gross. The water kettle is enameled metal. The area around the edge of the spout as well of the inside of the kettle were entirely chipped and scratched with some rust. I wondered what was leaching into my water from it--and a new kettle only costs $25. Other enamel pots were also chipped--but I wasn't doing much cooking. Neither the second bedroom nor its ensuite bath have windows. That's right--a "bedroom" with no window and its bath with no window either and no fan to clear the air. Yech! The doors to both bathrooms are quite flimsy and so even if they closed properly--and neither of them could be closed--there is very little privacy. The mats in both bathrooms needed to be washed. The towels were clean and a nice quality and seemed quite new and there were plenty of them; there was adequate hot water for a shower and/or a bath. There is actually a TV that worked well and the wifi worked some of the time. But the place was not well cleaned and that eradicates other good points for me. After first noticing the general level of cleanliness I was left wondering if the sheets had actually been changed after the previous guests. I've stayed in many cottages over the years, and I never had that thought cross my mind before. I would describe the furnishings etc as way more shabby than chic, but the cleanliness factor was the big problem for me. I'd give it a pass next time.

Owner's Response: Nicki - I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your stay in our country cottage. We've been renting the cottage for more than 20 years with many of the guests returning every summer for their family vacation. True the building is over 150 years old and can get dusty quickly but the cottage was cleaned the morning of your arrival, and had been cleaned twice the week you visited us as October is a busy month for foliage seeking guests. As for more shabby than chic, the furnishings are Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic Couture collection sofa and chair, copied by many furniture designers. Additionally, we purchased new Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic sheets and towels at the begining of the rental season in May. The sheets and towels were washed on the morning of your arrival so they would smell fresh. We will look at changing our laundry detergent perhaps with a different scent. I really apologize that you thought the decorative antique french enamelware hanging on the wall was for use. It's just for decoration. The pots and pans are in the lower cabinets. We will make this clearer for future guests. We take your feedback seriously and will make sure there is an electric kettle this year on the counter to avoid future confusion. Again, we are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay at Stissing Lake Cottage.

One of the best properties I've stayed at.

  • 5 of 5

Antoinnette, the property owner was the best. She gave us access to the whole property, 11 acres, to have a family BBQ and bonfire. We had access to the kayaks, canoe, dock, and fishing poles! She is very knowledgeable in the area and helpful in things to do. She is over-the-top accommodating in her beautiful property. The 2 bedroom cottage we stayed in was nice and cozy with old antique beds decorations. The big house I was able to tour and it was Beyond awesome! Huge commercial cooktop and oven. In each bedroom has its own antique style. Very large bedrooms, very large sitting rooms, and a large walk around porch over looking the lake and moutains. we will be renting that house on our next family reunion. Thank you for a great stay! Tim

Our stay at the cottage was a most welcome tonic after an intense work period in the city. The setting is the "money shot" so pretty and serene and after only a few hours in the grounds we embraced the slow rhythm of Stissing Lake / Mountain and their surroundings.

Look forward to coming back .

P.S. Great morning walk around the lake and through Pine Plains
