Overview

About the property

Sleeps 6

The Recycled House is a unique structure in Charlottesville's lovely North Downtown neighborhood. It is constructed primarily from materials that have come from somewhere else and are getting a second life. It took over six years to collect the materials and use them in a thoughtful way. The house was designed as a guest house and a lot of effort has been put into building a place that's welcoming, interesting and fun! The materials give the place a lot of soul, the light from the 33 windows is fantastic and the location could not be better!

Charlottesville's historic Downtown Mall is just 4 short blocks away giving you access to over 60 restaurants within walking distance as well as movie theaters, concert venues, grocery stores and some great shopping. The University of Virginia is less than 2 miles away and accessible by the free trolley service. Monticello is less than 5 miles away--about 10 minutes by car.

The Recycled House sleeps 6. There's a king-sized bed in the master bedroom. The upstairs loft has a sleeper sofa that sleeps two, and there's a queen-sized sofa sleeper downstairs in the living room. All the linens and towels are provided. There's a half-bath downstairs and a full bath upstairs.

The kitchen is fully equipped with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances. There's a side porch, an upstairs deck outside with a treehouse feel, and another deck (made out of aluminum bleachers!) off the kitchen in the back yard. There's a grill in the backyard you're welcome to use.

A washer/dryer is available off the master bath.

Free wi-fi access is available.

The house is suitable for families with children. The staircase is a little steep, so you'll have to watch the little ones.

If you're searching for a really unique space in a great location, I welcome you to The Recycled House! Check out the video tour at http://recycled.house.

When inquiring, PLEASE tell me a little bit about yourself, the purpose of your visit, and any special needs or requests.

About Debra Weiss

I'm a web designer/developer and own my firm, drw Design. The Recycled House started out as a small idea and then took on a life of its own.

I've lived in Charlottesville since 1995 and love showing off this town! It's really hard to have a bad meal here. And it's really historic and pretty. There's always something interesting going on!

Why Debra Weiss chose North Downtown

It took over 6 years to collect materials from a TON of places to use in/on the house. It's been really satisfying to save amazing materials from the landfill, dumpster, etc. and use them in a thoughtful and creative way. I'll give you the tour when you come show you where everything came from. Most folks get a real kick out of it.

The Recycled House is quite special and if you want to be downtown, the location is fantastic.

What makes this house unique

The Recycled House was designed from the beginning as a guest house. It's very welcoming. People tell me it's really romantic. I have hosted a lot of families, girlfriend getaways, bridal parties, folks coming for reunions and sporting events at UVA and all the festivals that go on here in Charlottesville.

Just about everyone says the photos don't do justice to the place. You just have to come and stay and see it for yourself!

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a fabulous house! The house is unique, the location is excellent, and Debra is a wonderful host. As I sat on the front porch in the morning and early evening, I began to think It was my home as I waved to neighbors walking by on the path. I look forward to another visit.

Oh, and the delicious cookies Debra left in the cookie jar hit the mark for someone with a sweet tooth.

Wonderful, whimsical stay in C'Ville!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Recycled House for a long Spring Break weekend with our three daughters, ages 6, 8 and 16. The house was absolutely perfect! We felt like we were staying in a treehouse far away from everything, yet we were only blocks away from the mall, parks, shops, etc. The smaller girls made themselves at home, playing outside and interacting with awesome neighbors, like they had lived there for years. The walk to the mall was easy for them and they loved the small shops along the way - pie shop, candy store, and a market carrying everything you need, including produce, meats, milk, wine, etc. Debra is fantastic, I feel like we made a friend, in addition to having a place to stay. Definitely accept the tour from her when you get there. Finding out about all the recycled elements of the house makes the stay even more enjoyable. It's quick and she's so fun. We definitely look forward to a return trip!

Wonderful Accommodations & Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

In town for the weekend for a college tour, we selected the Recycled House due to both its unusual description and its proximity to the Mall in Charlottesville. We all were impressed with our lodging. Everything was perfect. Debra was a gracious hostess and from her tour and welcome it was obvious that she is passionate about her cute house. The house was plenty big enough for our family and having the extra half bath downstairs was a great plus with 3 teenagers, who also appreciated the wifi. The kitchen was nicely equipped (and the cookies to greet us were definitely a hit!). We took the quick walk into town to eat at Revolutionary Soup one nite and grab Christian's Pizza the next. The amazing tulikivi stove in the living room kept us nice and cozy on a damp and chilly evening. One of my children decided she might end up at UVA if she could live at the Recycled House full time!

Great, comfortable house perfect for C'ville

  • 5 of 5

Fun and interesting house to stay in Charlottesville with fantastic proximity to the Downtown Mall. Debra is thoughtful in her preparations (cookies, magazines, quality linens, plenty of pillows, suggestions of things to do). We hope to stay here again!

"If these walls could talk"

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED this house! Everything in the house has a story attached to it, and we enjoyed hearing some of them during a brief introductory tour by Debra when we checked in. The house was well stocked with linens, coffee, and delicious cookies! One of our favorite parts doesn't show up in the pictures, it's a side porch along the driveway. We had morning coffee and evening wine there, admiring the day lillies and watching the fireflies while the sun set. Friends that met us at the house before we went out to other weekend activities were jealous of our accommodations. Proximity to the Downtown Mall, Belmont neighborhood, and trolley to UVA Grounds is great. This will be at the top of our list for return trips!
