Helluskógur 10 is a perfect base for your Icelandic holiday. A memorable day to the Snæfellsnes National Park with a snow scooter trip on top of the amazing Snæfellsjökull glacier, a visit to a natural hot spring like Deildartunguhver, amazing waterfall like Hraunfossar, active volcano like Grábrók, crater like Eldborg, Historical Viking place like Reykholt or take a walk into the glacier Langjökull. Stroll through the near by cozy town of Borgarnes and drop by the cafe’s, museums, shops and restaurants. Take a drive to the Reykjavík Capital with all its glory, nightlife and culture, a day trip on the Golden Circle and see the exploding Geysir with all its natural power, drop by Thingvellir national park with all its nature phenomenon and view, in close up, the beautiful Gullfoss waterfall. In the evenings you will always come back home to this modern architecturally designed house in Helluskógur and probably the first thing you will do is, relax in the hot tub with a glass of red wine and enjoy the Northern Lights in the peace and quietness after a memorable day.

The house has an open kitchen-living room with a large walk around work top in the kitchen. It is very spacious and ideal for family and friends preparing a good meal together. In the kitchen there is high quality white ware and equipment for cooking and baking. The living room has large windows and amazing view. About Heidrun

About Robert and Heidrun

I am a teacher and I have a BA degree in Icelandic literature. My husband Robert works as a Pilot in Europe and has a BS degree in business administration. We have two little boys, 5 and 8 years old.

We started building the house in 2009, moved in 2011 and it was our home for two years. That´s why the house has everything a home needs. Now it is our summerhouse and we love staying there, both in the summer and winter time. We offer others to stay in our house and enjoy all it has to offer.

Heidrun purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Heidrun chose Iceland

We wanted to build a nice holiday home where we could relax and recharge the batteries and we think that´s precisely what we succeeded. Also the short distance to the town Borgarnes, where you can find all necessities, and to the Capital Reykjavík, is a very big advantage for us.

What makes this cottage unique

Peacefulness - You can sit outside or walk around the house on the large patio and enjoy the nature and the amazing mountain view in the peaceful surroundings.

High Standard and modern – All the equipment in the house is high standard and you should find everything you need and more. The open space and the large windows give you the feeling that you are out in the nature even when you are inside.

Location - The location of the house is ideal for exploring the west side of Iceland. There are short driving distances to many beautiful places in the nature such as waterfalls and craters. Museums and historical places are also nearby. There is only a 15 minutes drive to the nearest town, Borgarnes, where you can find for example a swimming pool, golf course, shops, bakery, restaurants, library and health care.

A perfect introduction to Iceland

  • 5 of 5

I booked this home on the strength of the photos and description listed on the VRBO site. This was our first visit to Iceland, and we chose this location for a "base camp" for one day excursions. Upon our arrival to this wonderful home right outside the charming town of Borgarnes, an easy trip from Reykjavik, we happily found a home thoughtfully designed, well-built and cared for by its family. The accommodations are very comfortable...above and beyond, particularly in winter. The amenities are all top quality. The whirlpool is glorious! It's a perfect setting to watch the Northern Lights. I could go on and on. As for the owners, they are generous and hospitable, quick to respond to questions. The location is fabulous for one day trips, especially to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Borgarnes is close by for groceries and gas, wine shop, good food and museum...very nice folks...and a too - tempting bakery with good cappuccino! If we never make it back to this mystical country, this home will provide a wonderful, lasting memory for the rest of our lives. Many, many thanks to Heidi and her family. Pakka per fyrir.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review. We agree it is an easy trip from Reykjavik and a good base for day tours since there are so many things to see and experience all around. And it is also a big advantage that Borgarnes is close by for all necessities. It is our favorite place in the world, so glad that our guests like it to. Yes you could say Iceland is a mystical country, hope you make it back some day. Þakka þér fyrir.

Comfortable and cozy countryside home(s)

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful and charming rental homes (we rented both the main house and cottage) located in the countryside. Very clean and comfortable with every convenience thought of. The owners are incredibly responsive and helpful with planning and area information. Great location for a group to stay with easy driving to many activities and sites. The hot tubs were a definite plus at the end of a day of touring. The house is located near a cute town with restaurants, shops and grocery. We would definitely stay here again.

The perfect family retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect holiday home for our family (we were two adults and four children). It was a wonderful destination to follow what is a spectacular scenic drive from the airport.

The big open-plan kitchen/diner/lounge walled with large windows made for a wonderful space to spend time together - one of my favourite things about this holiday was having the chance for the family to connect and enjoy togetherness! The piano, the dvds, jigsaw puzzle of Iceland, and childrens lego blocks were much appreciated by our sons, as was the decking which surrounds the property and allows for young children to run around and let off steam in safety.

The views and the skies were beautiful. We felt so strongly connected to the raw power and beauty of the nature all around, and knowing that the geothermal energy is running the heating and electricity in the home, and that the drinking and bathing water is so pure, amplified our appreciation of how the Icelanders have utilised these natural forces to create what we consider to be the luxuries of life. The quality and taste of the water was excellent and we miss it already...

The hot tub was a favourite with all of us, rain or shine we spent many a relaxing hour or two in the tub. The massaging jets were excellent treatment for my frozen shoulder!

Heidrun was so helpful both in advance and throughout our stay, with the best advice. The info provided in advance is well-thought out and very useful. We found that shopping in the local Bonus store and preparing meals at home suited our budget better than eating out every day, and the kitchen was very well-equipped for our needs. And yes, the coffe machine really is wonderful - missing that too..!

The beds were comfortable and spacious, and everything in the property was clean and well maintained. We would definitely reccommend this beautiful holiday home to anybody visiting Iceland. The region is so pretty, there is a lot within a comfortable driving distance to see and do, and it is the perfect place to just stay at home and relax too. We had been reading the Eddas and the sagas which connect to this area (Egil's Saga and the Laxdaela Saga) so our enjoyment of the landscape was heightened by some knowledge of the Icelanders' ancestral past.

Our thanks to Robert and Heidrun for making this lovely holiday home available for those of us so fortunate as to be able to travel to this beautiful and mysterious land.

Hidden Gem - Beautiful Home - Perfect location for all things in West Iceland

  • 5 of 5

This home was a perfect space. It would easily be comfortable for 6 people. It was impeccably clean. The kitchen was well equipped. The views were stunning from every corner of the house. Heidi, the owner, was very responsive to all questions. She always responded within 15 minutes of any email I sent. We plan to return sometime in the future and would recommend this property to anyone.

Borganes, the town nearby, is lovely. The restaurant at the Settlement Center was amazing. The local swimming center - pool and hot tubs was wonderful.

We could have spent our entire week relaxing in this little town. The house is situated along the Langa River. This was an unexpected plus. The river is incredibly beautiful. We aren't fisherman, but still enjoyed all the beauty. If you like to fish salmon this is a great spot to be. I'm sure you have to obtain a license, but gosh its amazing. We did see jumping salmon. Haefell, the Icelandic Goat Center, was one of our favorite stops. Snaefellsnes peninsula is a lovely day trip. Rainbows and waterfalls are everywhere you turn.

Owner's Response: Thanks for a lovely review. Yes, you need license to fish salmon in Langá river... :-) Nice to hear my guests describe the area around the house and the surroundings, we do recommend to our guests to spend some time there and take a walk down to the river. Perhaps you can come during the winter time the next time, also very beautiful and a bit different... :-) Welcome back to Helluskógur. Sincerely, Heidi and Rob

Incredible home in amazing setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights in June 2016. What a beautiful home! It was spotless and easy and I would have loved to spend more time there. It is about 15 minutes from the town of Borgarnes and seems quite isolated down a dirt road but it is so worth it for the beauty and peacefulness there. I would highly recommend this home.

Amazing week in Iceland

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from 5 amazing days in Iceland. The house met all our expectations. It was very clean and comfortable and the location was a perfect base for our day excursions exploring this amazing island. We especially enjoyed the hot tub in the evenings after a long day of driving and the views from every window were fantastic. The coffee maker makes an excellent cup of coffee. Heidi provided very useful information both regarding the house and things to do both near and far.

One of my best memories is stopping at the river near the little hotel on the other side of the main road and watching the salmon swimming upstream. I would definitely come back to Iceland and stay in the house again.

The house is located along the spectacular Salmon River, Langá, one of the greatest salmon rivers in Europe. There are walking paths from the house, where you can enjoy the peaceful nature and walk by the river. If you are staying in the late summer or autumn you will find blueberries growing near the river. You are welcome to pluck them, it´s delicious.

The house is a about a one hour drive north from the Reykjavík Capital and about 10 minutes from Borgarnes. In Borgarnes you can enjoy one of the nicest swimming pools in Iceland, play golf at Hamarsvöllur, visit the great Settlement center where you can learn about the Icelandic culture and saga and shop at the Bonus grocery store. In Borgarnes you will find the interesting Farmers market, Ljómalind, which sells food and products made in the area.

In the north direction, about one hour driving, you will find the old fishermen´s town Stykkishólmur, where you can go sailing, Whale Watching and enjoy Bird Watching paradise. In Stykkishólmur you can visit interesting museums like the Water museum and the Volcano museum. On the way to Stykkishólmur you will find the crater Eldborg which is an interesting natural phenomenon with lava all around.

Close to Stykkishòlmur, you'll find the great Snæfellsnes National Park. It was voted one of **Iceland Top Five** to visit. There you can enjoy Snæfellsjökull, and its magical and remarkable nature. On the way from Stykkishólmur to the National Park you will drive through a small town called Grundarfjörður. There is one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland, called Kirkjufell. Drive on and you will find plenty of interesting places worth visiting, like Djúpalónssandur a beautiful pebbled beach, Vatnshellir Cave and the popular hiking trail by the cliff beach between Hellnar and Arnarstapi.

The beautiful Borgarfjörður area is close by Helluskógur. In Borgarfjörður you can find many interesting places to visit. The largest thermal spring in Iceland, Deildartunguhver, is located near a small town called Kleppjárnsreykir and is about 40 minutes drive from Borgarnes. Close by Deildartunguhver is the historical place Reykholt. There you can find Snorrastofa which we recommend visiting if you are interesting in Icelandic Saga. If you drive on from Reykholt towards Húsafell you will see the beautiful waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, which are absolutely worth a visit. From Húsafell you can go on a tour into the glacier Langjökull, one of Europe’s largest glacier. Amazing!

You can say about the location of the house that it is midway between the two great National Parks, Snæfellsnes and Þingvellir. Þingvellir is located on the Golden Circle and is a popular tourist destination. Þingvellir is a place of historical, cultural, and geological importance. It is the site of a rift valley that marks the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is also home to Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. On the Golden Circle you can also visit the great waterfall Gullfoss and the hot spring Geysir.

We are here to help you plan your vacation and get the most out of your stay in Iceland. Later on we will send you an information package with the House manual and detailed directions, Restaurants and cafes in the area and Attractions in the area. We will also send you a few apps, like the Home Away Hospitality manager app where we have put in a lot of information. Also apps for Icelandic yellow pages, northern light forecast and Icelandic weather forecast. You are welcome to contact us at any time if you have any questions.
