Photos and Description of this Milford holiday house

6 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Sleeps 21

This is a wonderfully tranquil retreat away from the noise and congestion of the Rehobeth area, but with the resort attractions only a short drive away. It is located a few miles north of Slaughter Beach in a tiny beach community of about 10 houses called Big Stone Beach. This beautiful 6 bedroom house perches on an acre of land right on a private beach. The property is between the Delaware Bay and a the wetlands of a huge nature preserve. Every room has large windows with gorgeous views of the bay and/or the wetlands so you can see the sunrise and the sunset. The majority of the house is only 2 years old and is built to comfortably accommodate a large group. Every room has its own heating and air conditioning unit which can be individually controlled, so that everyone is comfortable. There is a large great room and a huge family room where people can meet together, but there are also plenty of private nooks where they can be alone. There are 2 full kitchens, 3 full bathrooms, a pool with a deck and a balcony for enjoying the sunrise over the water.

The first floor of the house has a huge, open plan living/dining/kitchen area with beautiful views, stone floor, exposed beam wood ceiling. There is a large, flat screen with hundreds of movies, Wifi, and comfortable seating. On the first floor there are 4 spacious bedrooms, all with great views, and two tiled bathrooms. The 3 dining areas can seat 21 people. There is a breakfast bar and island in the big, fully equipped kitchen, with stone floor, tiled back splash and stainless appliances, including above range microwave. There is a washer and dryer on the first floor. A large family room with glass on 3 sides gives expansive garden and bay views, and opens to a 20 foot wide x 4 foot deep pool with a deck. On the other side of the family room is the garden and patio with table, chairs and grill.

On the second floor the main room is an open plan bedroom/living/dining/kitchen area with a king sized bed. It has a full kitchen with island, stainless appliances including above range microwave and tiled back splash. There is a dining area, and a relaxed seating area with a large flat screen and a DVD player with DVDs. The room has bamboo floors and vaulted wood ceiling with fans. The many large windows frame amazing views of water and sky in the front and back. There is a granite and glass tiled bathroom with vessel sink in a custom wood vanity. A balcony off the living area overlooks the beach and bay. An adjoining loft bedroom with 2 boat beds and a queen bed has a cool play/sitting area.

A wheelchair ramp gives easy access from the driveway to the first floor. The triple wide, 12 car driveway doubles as a volleyball and badminton court. When you walk up 4 steps to the top of the dune in front of the house you are on your own private beach with boating, playing in the sand, fishing, swimming (at high tide), miles of walking, and amazing sights of sea life including dolphins passing by. If you prefer to swim in the ocean the resort beaches are about 45 minutes south. This is a nature lovers and birders paradise, with many species of sea, land, and wetland birds observable right from your living areas. Recent guests counted 59 species at Big Stone Beach. Horse shoe crabs and other sea creatures breed in the Delaware Bay, so you will see plenty of crabs on the beach in the end of May and June. Other creatures you will probably see are toads, rabbits, foxes, deer, and snakes. There are 2 canoes and a kayak at the property for you to use to explore the area.

First floor layout:

Bedroom #1. King sized bed - sleeps 2

Bedroom #2. Queen sized bed - sleeps 2

Bedroom #3. Two twin bunks, one trundle and a double futon - sleeps 5 or 6

Bedroom #4. One double/twin bunk, one twin bunk - sleeps 5.

Second floor:

Bedroom #5. King sized bed - sleeps 2

Bedroom #6. Two twin beds, one queen bed in loft - sleeps 4

These are a few of the many nearby attractions: Milford (12 minutes) has shops, antique stores and restaurants. Many nature preserves for biking, birding and walking are within minutes drive, or a canoe or bike ride away. Rehoboth Beach resort with ocean beaches, shopping outlets and other attractions (40 minutes). Lewes, with the Cape May - Lewes ferry and whale and dolphin watching (40 minutes). Bowers Beach with fishing trips (20 minutes). Killens Pond Water Park (20 minutes). Boat ramp (10 minutes). Harrington Racetrack, Casino, and State Fair (25 minutes). Dover the state capital and Air Force Base (20 minutes), Dover Speedway (30 minutes), Dogfish Head Brewery with tours near Milton (25 minutes)

In the summer we offer weekly rentals from Saturday 2pm to Saturday 10am. We provide bath and beach towels, and some cleaning supplies and paper goods to get you started. You can provide your own bedding or for $15/bed we can provide it. No smoking is allowed inside.

Perfect wedding venue

  • 5 of 5

We held our wedding this past weekend at the property- ceremony on the beach and reception back at the house. It was perfect!! The open layout of the first floor was ideal for the 50 guests we had. The home is much larger and spacious than the pictures show. We absolutely loved the bedroom upstairs with sitting area and small kitchen. Waking to the beautiful sunrises was breathtaking! And our son loved the boat room.

We were initially concerned about the beach area based on reviews (critically important since we were having a beach wedding). The beach is beautiful! We loved the "naturalness" of it. The water is the same as you will find at any DE beach.

We really appreciated the privacy of the location. Again, perfect for our occasion. We even saw a bald eagle in one of the trees!

Owner's Response: The house is ideal for a small wedding group, and the front room can accommodate 50 or 60 people if the weather doesn't co-operate for a beach wedding. Larger groups, up to 100 people, have set up a marquee on the driveway for the reception. I'm so glad our beach house helped to make your wedding a wonderful, memorable time.

Great private vacation spot.

  • 4 of 5

This is a great secluded place to visit. We brought our dogs and they enjoyed vacation as much as we did. The beach was so great, it was like having miles and miles of our own private beach. The house was very spacious with lots of room for everyone. We hope to be back next year. The flies were bad later in the week but after talking to other beach vacationers we heard that the flies were bad in a lot of places this year.

Owner's Response: In this area it's unusual to be able to walk right from your front door onto a secluded, private beach. It is a wonderful place for dogs, with all the sights and smells and lots of places to run.The flies have been terrible up at my place in Pennsylvania. I think it's because it has been a long, hot summer and September is hotter than usual.

Needs a lot of work...but there are some positives.

  • 2 of 5

I want to be as fair as possible in the review but it was not the best of experiences for myself or any of our family members. We have a large family, 7 adults and 9 kids (2 babies). My mom is in a wheelchair, so this was the first (and pretty big) disappointment. The house is advertised as "Wheelchair accessible". There is a ramp, but before entering the house, there is a large 4" step. The angle of the ramp make it impossible for a ramp to correct this. If you need this as a feature, this house will not work for you.

Overall, the condition of the house left us all wondering how often repairs are done, and when they are, who is doing them. There were leaks in the sunroom, and the shower upstairs leaks into the main living area. It was very windy the day we left, and pieces of the roof and siding were blowing off. The indoor floors are outdoor tiles, very heavy duty and rough. There are no area rugs, so dirt and sand, spills, etc are very difficult to clean up and feel like you're walking on clean floors. With small children who are crawling, this presents a problem as it's uncomfortable for them and always finding dirt.

Some of the positives we were very much looking forward to were bit disappointing as well. The only wildlife we encountered were mice in the kitchen and lots of ants on counters and floors. The flies are not the fault of the house but really inhibited any fun outside. These are not your standard flies. Google "greenheads". While common in this area, because the house is basically on the marsh where they breed, they are there by the thousands. We all left with the battlescars of fighting these guys off. The bits are painful and kept the kids from wanting to play in the pool. Down by the water, while they seemed to leave the kids alone, they attacked the adults mercilessly.

The privateness of the bay was really the biggest highlight. Being able to walk right over to the beach was so nice. Although the beach is not what you typically consider. Just be ready for lots of dead horshoe crabs, and various sea waste.

I wouldn't recommend staying here to anyone, not at least until the house is renovated. Even then, the flies would be enough to keep me away for good.

Owner's Response: A very unfair review. We have had many people in wheelchairs stay at the house without an issue. I'm sorry that the reviewer didn't even mention that the owner took a lot of time to bring an ATV down to the beach house for this group so the lady in the wheelchair could get onto the beach. These guests informed me of the leak in the sunroom less than 2 days before the end of their stay, and the drip from the shower upstairs less than a day before the end of their stay. We called repair people immediately, but to expect them to be fixed in a day is unreasonable. The siding or shingles blowing off was because a tropical storm was coming in, nothing to do with lack of maintenance. The floor in the living room is very expensive, indoor travertine (stone) which most people love, not "heavy duty and rough outdoor tiles". There is a large soft rug in the sun room perfect for toddlers to play on, and area rugs in all bedrooms except one, which has a smooth bamboo floor. Most groups that stay see a lot of wildlife, including dolphins, rabbits, toads, and foxes. As with any house if you leave food out you will attract ants. You can see hundreds of birds from the house. One birding family that stayed several times counted 57 species that they saw in the area around the beach house. There are certainly not thousands of flies, but on a still hot day if there are some around you may need insect repellant. The description of the house in the listing states clearly that this is a natural beach, not a manicured resort beach. So you will find shells, including horseshoe crab shells, sea glass, driftwood, seaweed etc on the beach. Most people enjoy finding beautiful shells or colorful stones as they walk on the peaceful, private beach.

Beautiful Isolation

  • 4 of 5

This beach home is comfortable, lots of light and a lovely feeling of being far from those maddening crowds. It is truly a retreat.

We rarely saw anyone else on "our" beach. With a view in front of the Delaware Bay and in back, the marshes, we didn't need to leave the house to watch egrets, ospreys and bald eagles. Walking on the beach, in the evening we saw red foxes while we collected shells. Be sure to pack binoculars. Oh! And don't forget bug spray. There are biting flies, but they leave you alone if you use Deet. Good Screening on the porch makes it the ideal spot to gather and chat or nap, with the music of the tides soothing your ears.

The floor plan with bedrooms on either end of the house and multiple gathering areas in the center allowed privacy for multiple families. Dishwasher, laundry and well-equipped kitchen were bonuses, too, minimizing clean-up chores. We could have stayed for a month with no more packing than we did for a few days.

Owner's Response: It's great when guests enjoy the solitude of the house and area around as much as we do. It is such a beautiful area with abundant wildlife, and constantly changing colors of the scenery. We try to make the house as comfortable as possible for our guests, stocked with everything you might need or enjoy while staying there.

the older kids loved searching for shells on the beach

  • 3 of 5

After the tide came in and went back out, the older kids LOVED walking and searching the beach for shells. One evening my grandson caught a baby shark which was very exciting! The adults enjoyed the sunsets and watching the ships off in the distance. It was also awesome to see the dolphins swim by! The neighbors were friendly.

The house needs some TLC but was plenty BIG enough. The "boat room" is cute but has a low ceiling over the beds, it is ideal for small children but because it is a separate entrance to the upstairs, and the boat room is at the top of the stairs, an adult will want to be in the boat room with the children and will likely bump their head on the ceiling. Also, the "queen size bed" in the boat room is made up of cushions, not a queen mattress.

We enjoyed making s'mores on an outside fire, although some of the plastic chairs are cracked and not usable. Because the water is very dirty, nobody went swimming in the ocean, however, there is a pool. Unfortunately, there was only one canoe and one kayak which we could not use because there were NO paddles.

Horseshoe crabs (dead and alive) washed in everyday on the beach, all different sizes, I'd never seen them so big.

I understand items wash away and get broken during big storms but if someone cleans up the junk underneath the house and disposes of it, with a little TLC and landscaping, this could be a gorgeous rental property.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your time at our beach house, and appreciated the beauty of the area. I would like to respond, however, to a couple of the comments you made about the house The boat room's lower ceiling may be a concern for a tall person, but most adults will not have a problem with bumping their heads. The queen bed is actually a real queen mattress...not sure why you thought it was cushions. If an adult needs to be close to the children there is a king sized bed in the room just opposite the boat room entrance. I'm also not sure why you couldn't find any paddles, but I have made sure that they are now with the kayaks, and have bought another paddle and another kayak. The cracked chairs are being replaced. Thanks for letting us know your concerns. We are always trying to improve the property and provide a relaxing and enjoyable environment for our guests.

An awesome find on VRBO !!!!!

  • 5 of 5

The house was great !! Plenty of room inside and well equipped. The location is secluded at the end of the road. The view from inside the house overlooks the nature preserve on one side and the bay on the other side. Our daughter got married here and it worked out perfectly. The owner was so helpful with everything. We walked on the beach and didn't see a soul most of the weekend. It was a great find !!!
