THE EXPERIENCE

Remember when you were a kid and your most pressing engagement was playing all day until dinner time? A vacation on Woods Pond is going to take you back to those days. Having escaped the overdevelopment, crowds, and noise that have changed the character of larger ponds and lakes in the area, Woods Pond is considered the hidden gem of the Lakes Region. The pond is quiet, peaceful, and serene. No jet skis buzzing the shores, no loud music or parties—just the calming sounds of nature like waves lapping on the shoreline, frog calls softly echoing across the water in the evening, and loons performing their hauntingly beautiful songs.

Start your day with a cup of coffee and a quiet paddle on the flat calm, glass-like waters of early morning. Play all day on the pond or check out the attractions in historic Bridgton, then come back to grill out on the deck, watch the sun set over the water through a frame of 100-year-old pine trees, and roast marshmallows over a bonfire while the fireflies and the stars sparkle all around. Collapse into a comfortable bed and get ready to do it all over again.

GUESTS BEST SUITED FOR THIS PROPERTY

Responsible, mature guests looking to get away and relax in peace and quiet are welcome. This includes small families, couples, and friends in groups of 6 or fewer. The property is suitable for guests of all ages including babies and children, though I do require that the person booking the listing be at least 40 years old. As much as I love wildlife, no pets are allowed.

My home is nestled in a serene neighborhood with 5 great neighbors I’ve known for over 20 years. Most of my neighbors are retired and enjoy the quiet pleasures of lake life, so it is important that guests be respectful and limit their noise level during the day and evening. There are also some non-human “neighbors” who also appreciate peace and quiet, such as the loon who nests 1,000 feet away and the eagle who fishes around the pond daily and sometimes pulls a catch out of the water right in front of the property.

If you’re looking for a place to blast your radio, yell like Tarzan, and generally run wild, I can recommend some great rental homes on larger lakes more suited to your vacation needs.

Please do not exceed the 6-guest limit for the property or unfortunately you will be asked to leave.

ABOUT WOODS POND

Woods Pond is 2 miles long by ¾ of a mile wide and 29 feet deep in the center, giving you ample space for your favorite lake activities including swimming, boating, water skiing, sailing, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. My home has two private sand beaches for swimming and lake lounging. One beach is 16 feet wide and you can walk out onto the sand directly from the lawn. The other beach is 20 feet wide, located down a few stone steps from the bonfire pit. These sand beaches are very special and unique—all the newer properties on the pond have rocky shores.

Woods Pond is home to Maine’s most magnificent wildlife: loons, bald eagles, the great blue herron ospreys, black bears, deer, and the most photographed animal—the Maine moose. For the angler, the pond is stocked with large and small mouth bass, brown trout, rainbow trout, salmon, white perch, pickerel, and hornpout (New England catfish).

HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY

Woods Pond is named after Bridgton’s first surveyor, Solomon Wood, who came to the area in the fall of 1776. In 1935 and 1936, my grandfather visited and made his own careful study of all the open land around the pond, searching for just the right spot to build his dream camp. He settled on a location that received the most sunlight throughout the day and had the perfect sunset view directly across the pond every night.

Built in two phases, the original camp on the property was one of the first structures on Woods Pond. My grandfather started out by building the summer home’s living quarters in 1936. Later, a large porch was added. The porch was actually taken from a storefront in town, loaded into an ox-drawn sleigh, and brought across the frozen pond to the property in wintertime. When spring arrived, my grandfather attached the porch to the main structure. And he built the first dock out of tree trunks in 1938.

In 1995, my family built the existing log home on the site of the original camp. I’ve spent the past 4 years renovating the home and property to create a getaway retreat.

With the recent renovations, the interior was designed to bring the outdoors inside, with natural stone interior walls, stone and tile flooring, granite countertops, and hardwood floors. It has been fully equipped with all the amenities of a comfortable home, including a stainless-steel refrigerator, gas stove, microwave, Keurig coffeemaker and traditional coffeemaker, washer and dryer, bed linens, bath towels, cooking utensils, outdoor gas grill, two indoor remote control gas fireplaces, flat screen TVs in every room, Satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and a Bose system with speakers in nearly every room. Thanks to a dug well, crystal clear drinking water flows from every faucet.

The exterior features a lakeside deck, two sandy beaches, a Jamaican-style hammock, a 30 by 6-foot wood dock, a horseshoe pit, abundant flowers, wild Maine blueberry bushes, an extra-large groomed lawn, and a recessed, fire-brick-lined bonfire pit just 8 feet from the water’s edge.

WHAT'S IN TOWN

Just 4 miles away, you’ll find the town of Bridgton, Maine. Bridgton was named one of the best vacation towns by DownEast magazine and is also a favorite spot of author Stephen King and his wife.

Bridgton features 2 grocery stores (Hannaford’s and Food City), restaurants (Vivo Italian Kitchen & Bar, The Black Horse Tavern, Campfire Grill, Venezia, Mack’s Place, Ruby Food, House of Pizza, and more), places to get fresh seafood and Lobster (Hannaford’s and Highland Seafood), a golf course and tennis courts (Bridgton Highlands Country Club), public beaches, nature trails for walking and exploring (Pondicherry Park), a bait and tackle shop (Uncle Lunkers), and 2 movie theaters including a restored drive-in (Bridgton Twin Drive-in) and a rebuilt "historic landmark" indoor movie theater (Magic Lantern Movie Theater & Pub).

About 10 miles away in the town of Naples, you’ll find additional shopping and dining options including live music at Rick’s Café. For winter fun, the Shawnee Peak Ski Resort is 9 miles away. Maine’s biggest city, Portland, is just an hour away and is great for day trips or a special dining experience.

About Todd

I grew up in northern Vermont, love nature and wildlife, and have been spending time in Maine for the past 45 years. This property is my getaway retreat and future retirement home. For the past 3 years, I’ve been allowing "select" guests to stay here 8-10 times a year to help with property taxes and upkeep. My ideal guests are mature, responsible adults who are property owners, know how to be respectful to neighbors, and understand “Lake Etiquette.” If you fit this description, please send me a message.

Todd purchased this cabin in 1936

Why Todd chose Western Maine

The original camp my grandfather built was one of the first structures on Woods Pond back in 1936. My family built the existing log home in 1995, and I have spent the past 4 years renovating it.

The property itself, Woods Pond, and Bridgton Maine are all very special. Obviously, the property has a lot of personal meaning to me as the site of decades of family history and wonderful memories.

Woods Pond is considered the gem of the Lakes Region thanks to its serene atmosphere and abundant natural beauty. The lack of human development and crowds has allowed the many wild residents of the area including loons, moose, eagles, deer, and black bears to thrive here.

Bridgton Maine has been named one of the best vacation towns by DownEast magazine. It’s also a favorite spot of author Stephen King. His book “The Mist” was set in Bridgton and describes the town in great detail, naming all the streets and landmarks throughout town. Stephen King and his wife visit Bridgton throughout the year and have been spotted at Hannaford’s, Rite Aid, and the Black Horse Tavern restaurant.

What makes this cabin unique

Because this cabin was built on the location of the original 1936 camp, it sits just 12 feet from the shore of Woods Pond with unobstructed views of the water. All the newly built rental homes on the pond are set back from the water by over 200 feet with their water views screened by trees.

My property features an extra-large, groomed lawn with no rocks, tree roots, or divots to trip over while you play or make your way to the water. This is a marked contrast to the newly built properties where you could easily twist or break an ankle on the bumpy ground. My lawn is perfect for playing horseshoes, badminton, whiffleball, volleyball, croquet, soccer, and more.

This cabin features not one but two sand beaches. This is a highly unique and desirable feature since the newer properties on the pond only have rocky shorelines and no beaches. The 16-foot-wide beach can be accessed simply by walking down from the lawn onto the sand, while the 20-foot-wide beach is located down a few stone steps from the bonfire pit. Both beaches have flat, sandy bottoms where you can safely wade out into the water.

At this property, you’ll have the unique opportunity to share daily life in close quarters with some of Maine’s most iconic creatures. The Maine loon–known as the “Queen of the Pond”—makes her nest 1,000 feet away from the log home, where you will hear and see her daily in the early summer months. There is also an eagle nest at the end of the pond where the home is located. The eagle hunts around the pond daily and you’ll often see him soaring majestically above with a massive 7-foot wingspan. If you’re lucky, you’ll witness the eagle catching a meal out of the pond right in front of the cabin. It’s a moment that will leave you breathless, like a National Geographic program happening live right before your eyes. If you have a telephoto lens for your camera, be sure to bring it to capture this beautiful eagle in flight.

Guestbook comments from the manager

I GIVE IT 5-STARS AND WE STAYED FROM 7-10 NOV. The place was beautiful. Bridgton was a wonderful town to visit and spend time in. Beautiful Log Home

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful, well crafted log home situated on a picturesque Maine pond. The location is perfect. Set in a quiet corner of the pond, it offers just the right amount of privacy and peacefulness. The home itself is well cared for, clean and the craftsmanship that went into it is beyond reproach.

As for the owner, Todd, I can't say enough. He met us when we arrived, gave us a tour and couldn't have been more welcoming. He also told us that he would give us our space, but would be available for anything we may need.

Overall, this was a perfect mix of great home, great location and great owner.

Thanks again Todd!

Perfect mix of Comfort and Rustic

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic and relaxing time on Woods Pond, and this was the perfect place to enjoy it from. The property is clean, neat and well appointed; and it still has tons of rustic charm which left us feeling connected to the water and nature. The owner is fantastic, walked us through the property and filled us in on the tips for having an enjoyable time in the area. He was also readily available when I had a question about fishing in the area after he had left, and was happy to help out. The nearby town is easily accessible with great food and coffee, and there's a kids playground 5 minutes away at the bottom of the lake that is really neat.

We'll definitely be back!

FABULOUS!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Maine, was hoping this location/cabin would be as nice as the pictures showed and description stated, it was! From the kitchen and living area you had a full view of the pond, very relaxing. We got to the property really late, Todd insisted on meeting us there and giving us a walk through despite how late we arrived. He was so pleasant and hospitable, the cabin is spotless and has everything you need. The dock, canoe, fire pit and hammock made outdoor living very enjoyable!! If you are looking for a place to slow down, take in nature but still have all the comforts of home, this cabin is perfect!!! Thanks for sharing it Todd.

Peaceful Maine lake retreat

  • 5 of 5

A perfect retreat for everyone looking for peace, quiet, sunsets, bonfires, swimming, fishing and canoeing. Clearly beat all our already high expectations. Even better than 'advertised', very well maintained. The owner went out of is way to make this a great experience for our family. Everything that makes you 'love Maine'. Looking forward to come back as soon as possible.

At home in Maine, returning again and again.

  • 5 of 5

This is THE place to vacation if you are looking for time on a lake in Maine.

The house is extremely well maintained, clean, with modern conveniences of

granite kitchen and bath , within a charming log cabin. There is a fast WiFi, large satellite TV with DVD player, music system through the house, fireplaces and even a guitar for playing guests.

The view and the beauty of the lake, the surrounding, well maintained, grounds , contribute to a magical stay.

The owner , Todd, takes excellent care , not only of the property, but of the guests, accommodating reasonable requests.

We always regret leaving at the end of vacation, and ensure that we can return again to a place that offers so many options to share with friends and family:

quiet and rest, a swim, canoe ride, an evening fire in the fire pit,

a picnic , a soccer game on the lawn, a nap in the hammock, a deck ....lots of spots to be in the sun or shade.

Easy lake living. We felt at home being there and like a good home we miss it.
