About Ailsa Steinert
I am a fulltime teacher in Massachusetts, I use the new Hampshire house as a retreat on weekends and vacations when it is not rented, as do my three sons and their families.
Ailsa Steinert purchased this Farmhouse in 1960
Why Ailsa Steinert chose Canaan
The house belonged to my mother in law who lived there full time for many years. My husband and I kept it after she died and have used it happily for years.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
I am a writer as well as a teacher. I have brought students in workshop groups to hike and write there close to nature as I and my own family have done.

The setting is beautiful, very peaceful and idyllic. We had our dog with us and we had no issues with the electric fence surrounding the house. I would describe the house as quaint, quirky, and funky. It is not in mint condition. The house was very musty from being shut up for a while. Once we opened windows it got a lot better. We found the kitchen to be stocked with just about everything we needed for our 3-week stay, though some items needed to be cleaned thoroughly before use. There are a number of good hiking trails in the area, but we had to do a lot of driving to get to them. Despite the few negatives, we had a very enjoyable and relaxing time. The price was reasonable.
Peaceful, charming farmhouse. Rustic, yet has all you need. Hanover is about 25 minutes away for shopping and restaurants.
We had a wonderful time!
The house was exactly as advertised and our family was comfortable and had such a great time. My son especially loved how the cows came running whenever we pulled in the driveway.
Glad you enjoyed your stay...come back another time!
Very spacious- a beautiful property.
The house was just as we expected and we had a comfortable stay.
The only downfall was with the outdoor space. We brought our dog with the intention of him being able to run around off leash in the big open yard. However, the property has an electric fence around it for the homeowner’s cows that cannot be turned off. The homeowner indicated that the fence wouldn’t hurt our dog, only startle him- but we were not willing to risk that. Our dog likes to run and explore, but is also pretty skiddish with new things and I imagine an electric shock wouldn’t be a good thing for him. It was fine to walk him on a leash, just was more inconvienent and not what we intended for the trip.
Wouldn’t recommend it to a family with small kids who intend to play in the yard or for dogs who run free.
Children and pets truly feel at home in our house. As I told you, Heather, there is no danger in the fence. We have let a neighboring farmer graze cows in our meadows for many years...which keeps the fields mowed and provides an interest to our grandchildren and tenants. We have always let children, grandchildren and animals run free on the lawns and under the apple trees...never had a problem. The electric fence gives a mild jolt, but is far too mild to do any damage to animals or children...without it, the cows would be loose near the house and the road. It has a jolt proof gate that lets us through into the upper field when the cows are elsewhere...children and pets under supervision for everyone’s sake...
Otherwise, the farmer has warned us to keep cats and other small pets inside because of coyotes and fisher cats in the woods, but that is the way of the country.
Sorry you felt restricted.
very homey, rural and privae
We use to live in area and was looking for something that was rural and private. The cows made my daughter of 47 very happy and crawling under the fence and feeding and patting was very special. A great experience for our 16 year old grandson, lots of home to have private moments, not on top of each other. Enjoyed very much!!!
Thank you Mary...glad you enjoyed your stay,
There is nothing quite like the peacefulness of a nice country farmhouse, and this place did not disappoint. It was close enough to all our activities, yet far enough away to be nice and quiet. I will definitely look up this place again when I come back to the area.
We look forward to your return! Thanks for coming...
Many woodland trails for walking; cardigan Mt close by for hiking, also Canaan Lake swimming and canoeing. Hanover NH and Woodstock Vt areas for sightseeing and shopping, restaurants, etc, within half hour by car...Hanover closer.
