About Pat or Sally Tilton

We both grew up in Alaska. Pat was 9 years old when his family arrived before statehood in 1956. Sally was 13 years old when her family drove the Alcan in 1967. We raised our two sons in Chugiak and have called it home since 1982. We are both retired now and enjoy working in our studio creating something new out of something old.

Pat or Sally Tilton purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Pat or Sally Tilton chose Alaska

The very moment we stepped foot on the Hermitage property in 1990, we knew we wanted to make it our home. This was before we had gone to the backyard and discovered the amazing view of Knik Arm and Mt. Susitna! During the late 80's the housing market in the area was in a severe slump. This property with its special qualities as well as it's special needs had been on the market for two years. We were up for the challenge and fortunately for us were able to obtain the property. Over the years we have continued to make improvements to make it what it is today. It is artistically unique and quaintly comfortable. We enjoy the beauty, serenity, and convenience of its location. The detached 2 story garage has been converted into a live-in art studio. This is where we live and create during the spring, summer, and fall months. During the winter months we move back in to the coziness of the Hermitage Cottage. And sometimes we escape the cold Alaskan winters to travel to South East Asia. Sharing the Hermitage Cottages makes this possible.

What makes this cottage unique

The Hermitage Cottage with its beautiful garden provides a unique blend of options. The main cottage, if only one bedroom is needed can be rented at a lower rate. For families with older children or couples traveling together and sharing expenses, the addition of the small cottage provides extra sleeping accommodations. The backyard with the sound of Peter's Creek and the serene view of Cook Inlet and Mt. Susitna provides privacy with a sense of Alaskan seclusion; Yet the property is conveniently located to amenities and nearby points of interest. The location provides an easy stepping off point for amazing day trips such as a day in the city of Anchorage or the quiet yet charming farming town of Palmer, hiking around Hatcher's Pass and historic Independence Gold Mine, fishing or flight seeing in historic Talkeetna, taking the train or driving to Seward for whale watching or fishing, visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Park near Portage Glacier or traveling to Whittier through the longest tunnel in North America, walking on the Matanuska Glacier, or easy hiking to near-by Thunderbird Falls and Reflection lake, hiking, bicycling, or kayaking at Eklutna lake, or simply enjoying a relaxing day in the privacy of your Homeaway from home.

The most magical place ever!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage and garden is the most beautifully appointed home away from home we have ever experienced. You will not be disappointed. It has everything you could ever want for an Alaska vacation.

Wonderful people with an absolutely beautiful location. Plenty of room for a family.

  • 5 of 5

Pat and Sally were welcoming and the beautiful home was truly a treat for our family to enjoy. Beautiful art work on the interior, comfortable beds, a great kitchen and a superb CD collection to listen to over coffee each morning. The quality of the home was amazing and we will definitely be back to this location in the future! Very highly recommended for families with children that require separate bedrooms, along with a private room for the parents. For couples traveling alone, just reserving the main cottage is perfect and you will be amazed by how comfortable you will be.

Charming cottages with beautiful view in green woods

  • 5 of 5

You can't beat the view or the plant and flower garden. We made fires every night we could and enjoyed our time around it together. The cottages are very clean and hosts are wonderful. The more you look around this home, the more intriguing details you see. Thank you for sharing your home Pat and Sally.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at this cozy cottage. Everything was well kept and comfortable. The kitchen was fully supplied to prepare anything. We especially enjoyed the cozy craftsman furnishings, fascinating artifacts, and interesting artwork, collections and décor. The whimsical details in the lovely cared for gardens were fun too. Situated at the end of the road in the woods, with a view of the Knik Arm and sounds of the rushing Peters Creek below, you feel far away and peaceful. Yet you are a short distance from the Hwy to anywhere in Alaska.

Beautiful location and home

  • 5 of 5

The pictures of this home can't capture the peacefulness one feels sitting outside at the patio. Sounds of planes taking off in the far distance, roosters crowing, and birds chirping. The flowers and property look like something out of a storybook. The cabin was fully stocked so we could prepare our meals here. Within an hour of being here, had the pleasure of seeing a moose and her two babies on the property. Although we still have over a week of vacation left, my two teenaged daughters don't want to leave "their cabin". You will not be disappointed if you stay at The Hermitage.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to meet you. The cow moose and new twin calves resting in the front yard and then browsing in our woods was special.
