About Pat or Sally Tilton

We both grew up in Alaska. Pat was 9 years old when his family arrived before statehood in 1956. Sally was 13 years old when her family drove the Alcan in 1967. We raised our two sons in Chugiak and have called it home since 1982. We are both retired now and enjoy working in our studio creating something new out of something old.

Pat or Sally Tilton purchased this cottage in 1990

Why Pat or Sally Tilton chose Alaska

The very moment we stepped foot on the Hermitage property in 1990, we knew we wanted to make it our home. This was before we had gone to the backyard and discovered the amazing view of Knik Arm and Mt. Susitna! During the late 80's the housing market in the area was in a severe slump. This property with its special qualities as well as it's special needs had been on the market for two years. We were up for the challenge and fortunately for us were able to obtain the property. Over the years we have continued to make improvements to make it what it is today. It is artistically unique and quaintly comfortable. We enjoy the beauty, serenity, and convenience of its location. The detached 2 story garage has been converted into a live-in art studio. This is where we live and create during the spring, summer, and fall months. During the winter months we move back in to the coziness of the Hermitage Cottage. And sometimes we escape the cold Alaskan winters to travel to South East Asia. Sharing the Hermitage Cottages makes this possible.

What makes this cottage unique

The Hermitage Cottage with its beautiful garden provides a unique blend of options. The main cottage, if only one bedroom is needed can be rented at a lower rate. For families with older children or couples traveling together and sharing expenses, the addition of the small cottage provides extra sleeping accommodations. The backyard with the sound of Peter's Creek and the serene view of Cook Inlet and Mt. Susitna provides privacy with a sense of Alaskan seclusion; Yet the property is conveniently located to amenities and nearby points of interest. The location provides an easy stepping off point for amazing day trips such as a day in the city of Anchorage or the quiet yet charming farming town of Palmer, hiking around Hatcher's Pass and historic Independence Gold Mine, fishing or flight seeing in historic Talkeetna, taking the train or driving to Seward for whale watching or fishing, visiting the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Park near Portage Glacier or traveling to Whittier through the longest tunnel in North America, walking on the Matanuska Glacier, or easy hiking to near-by Thunderbird Falls and Reflection lake, hiking, bicycling, or kayaking at Eklutna lake, or simply enjoying a relaxing day in the privacy of your Homeaway from home.

We stayed in the cottage for a few nights. Since it was just the two of us (age mid 60's mid 70's), we did not use the attached sleeping cottage but it looked to be very nice if you need more sleeping area. The cottage grounds are beautiful and well kept. There are garden treasures to be discovered around every corner and in the nooks and crannies about the property. The cottage and kitchen had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. Hosts were very pleasant and accommodating, property is clean and well maintained. The view from the outdoor sitting area and the kitchen table provided a nice view of the inlet. The cottage is at the end of the street and is private and quiet. The owners are artistic and there are several 'artsy' details in the house as well as various collectibles on display (maybe not good if you have small children.) Every time I sat down I would spy something else that I needed to get back up and explore. The hosts provide lots of books and music to enjoy. The Alaska Native Heritage Center is close by and was well worth the visit--take the guided tour and plan on spending several hours at the center.

Beautiful setting and wonderful decor.

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful and comfortable place to stay. We were there for a week and felt at home the instant we walked in. We plan on staying here every time we go to Alaska. It is very clean and there were so many extras included with the cottage. This is a wonderful place and I wish we were still there.

Alaska charm

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was an amazing experience. The Hermitage Cottage was a true home away from home! We enjoyed outside fires and smores against a beautiful background. The inside offered all the comforts of home. The gardens were spectacular! The Tiltons were wonderful hosts!

The Hermitage Cottage is Unforgettable

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate to spend a family vacation at the Hermitage Cottage during 4th of July weekend. It was the perfect homebase for all our adventures. It was located conveniently near the main highway but far enough you do not hear/see the traffic as you slip into your quiet forest retreat. It is located approximately 20 min north of downtown anchorage. Every accommodation was made available by our gracious hosts. They thought of everything to make your stay in the cottage and even your day adventures feel just like home. Pat was available to us for helpful advice about travel, traffic, locations, restaurants, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed coming "home" to enjoy a meal prepared in the slow cooker, a relaxing evening gazing out over the water/mountain view, or enjoying the albums of their extensive cd collection. The home is well kept, comfortable and fully functional. The house is filled with beautiful and interesting artwork with something new to discover every day. The garden is breathtaking.

Definitely call them to touch base before your trip, he has many helpful suggestions in terms of visiting the cottage first before you go buying groceries (there are many staples already available). Also check with them when you are deciding what to pack, I was surprised at how many items were available that I did not need to pack (umbrella, bear spray, hair dryer, even shampoo/conditioner, bath salts, you name it!)

Looking forward to returning in the near future. Thank you Pat and Sally!

The house is perfectly located for day trips north or south of Anchorage. House was very clean. Perfect for 2 to 3 people. Larger groups may need 2 bathrooms. The house had all the luxury of home plus some luxuries my home doesn't.
