About this property

High Lonesome Cabin...Elevate Your Soul! Peaceful Seclusion

Hi Folks! BEFORE YOU CONTACT US (and if you get past this paragraph we encourage you to!) we have a 4 adult maximum and a 2 night minimum.....sorry, no exceptions.

***FOUR-WHEEL/ ALL WHEEL DRIVE IS REQUIRED***

Children are very welcome but should be supervised or old enough to be responsible. Click the calendar tab to see if your desired dates are currently available. We require 4 wheel or ALL wheel drive vehicles due to the steepness of the gravel driveway, not because of weather. Rates are posted under the reviews section a little further down on this page, or you can click the rates tab above. If you're still interested, please read on and be sure to read our unsolicited GUESTS REVIEWS....our wonderful guests are so much better than us at describing the experience. (and we're pretty biased, anyways) Thanks!

****PLEASE READ*** : We request that our guests leave the cabin in good rental condition for the next occupants. This means a basic cleaning/ straightening up of the entire cabin, leaving it clean and orderly. This also includes bringing your own linens or washing and folding the ones available at the cabin. We provide a comprehensive list of check-out procedures that are easy to follow. This allows for earlier check-in times and later check-out times adding many extra hours to enjoy yourselves, as well as helping us keep our costs and our renter fees down. So far we're happy to say there have been very few problems and we maintain a 5 star rating on VRBO......in short, WE HAVE GREAT GUESTS (most of whom are repeats) who understand, appreciate and desire a true cabin experience, and treat the cabin as they would their own home.
You having a great time at High Lonesome is our number one concern, so it's important to us that you are as aware as possible before you go!

High Lonesome Cabin was built in 2008 in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. This rustic cabin sits on 20 secluded acres high on a steep finger of the Priest Mountain near the Appalachian Trail in Tyro Va., minutes from Crabtree Falls. When you stay at High Lonesome you have a mountain all to yourself, and you may never feel the need to start the car again until you have to leave. But if you do venture out, wineries, orchards, stables, golf, rivers, antiques, lakes and trails are all within minutes of the long gravel driveway.

This is a small cabin (technically all cabins are small by definition) and we don't have swimming pools or hot tubs or jacuzzis or saunas, but you can get all that at a Holiday Inn. What we do have is the Tye river right across the street at the end of our long, gravel driveway, home to some of the east coast's best fly fishing, as well as swimming holes and the AT swing bridge. Sherando lake is a short drive away and offers swimming, fishing and kayaking in a surreal mountain/beach setting.....a must see! The Appalachian Trail is a short walk away, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is very close as well. And if you haven't seen Crabtree Falls, it's a must.....highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi. Our 20 acres are surrounded by National Forest and protected land, so you actually have more like 100 acres of privacy! Outback in a small clearing is a stone fire pit where you can enjoy marshmallows and the starriest skies you've ever seen. There's also a picnic table and a charcoal grill, as well as a shed to keep extra stuff in. In winter, Wintergreen ski resort is about 20 minutes away, offering the best skiing/snowboarding Virginia has to offer....there is also tubing and ice-skating.

The main attraction of the High Lonesome is definitely outdoors, but the inside is pretty cool, too. There's a porch with a great view, picnic table, ceiling fan, rustic natural log columns, rocking chairs and outdoor speakers....or just listen to the birds and the Tye river off in the distance. Moving inside, there's a small table for dining or cards, a dartboard, a wood stove/ fireplace, plenty of seating to watch a movie on the plasma TV, gorgeous stonework with cedar and pine walls/floors, a decent sized kitchen with cookware and utensils provided, small bathroom with shower only. In the back is a small but cozy master bedroom with a very comfortable queen-sized bed. Both areas have ceiling fans and there is a wall mounted heat pump unit for AC/heat. Up the spiral staircase is the loft with a queen-size and a double bed...there's a TV with dvd player and a Gamecube and lots of video games.

Some modern conveniences are furnished, but this is not a ginormous luxury log home masquerading as a “cabin”. The spectacular view, total privacy and mountain setting are its finest attributes….ones that only Mother Nature could provide. If a serene mountain escape is what you seek, High Lonesome Cabin will elevate your soul and clear your mind.

Wowza!
First let me say the view from this property is stellar! The tranquil atmosphere is absolutely to die for. The driveway is not for the faint of heart and AWD/FWD is a must but getting to the cabin at the top is well worth the white knuckling on the way up. With AWD we did not have any issues but as instructed do not slow down on the drive up. Definitely a must to go to Devils Backbone Brewing Basecamp. Hopefully you'll get meet Taylor our wonderful waiter while you are there. The trail up Priest Mountain is challenging but getting to the summit is a huge reward. The trail will test you mentally and physically. Coming back to HLC afterwards is one of the best parts of recovering from that trail. The tranquility sitting on the front porch and seeing/listening to all of the birds brings such a peacefulness over your entire being. The cabin itself is beautiful and well equipped. Makes you feel right at home while enjoying being on the side of a mountain.

Ribbit
Accurate listing. No joke about 4WD. We brought two vehicles and left the van at the base and ferried the family, dogs, and stuff up the hill in two short trips. The apples at the orchard are delicious and cheap. You could easily feed your family for the whole trip with a giant $22 bag of "Evercrisp" apples! Tye river bridge area right across the road is beautiful. I bought a cheap fly rod and learned how to cast while the boy floundered in the shallow river lol. Truly a great access point for the Appalachian Trail, and Crabtree Falls a few miles down the road is definitively worth a visit. The highlight for us was the friendly dog policies. We have 3 boxers, all well behaved and such, but still most places don't want to accommodate and I understand that. Too many smooth brains out there that don't train their animals. The only extra charge here for our dogs was the little extra elbow grease needed to clean up after ourselves as requested. Highly recommend for hiking and dog people.

Great secluded getaway cabin
Wonderful cozy cabin with everything we needed. Beautiful weather allowed us to sit on the front porch both in the mornings and evenings. We hiked local trails, had fires outside and in the wood burning stove. The description of needing a 4-wheel drive vehicle is VERY accurate. 12-15% incline for most of the 1/4 mile driveway. I hope we can find some more time to return for perhaps a longer stay...

We have been visiting the Virginia Blue Ridge mountains for over 30 years and have always dreamed of owning a place here. We have a deep love for nature, art and music, so we wanted something semi-rustic with a down to earth, 'blend in with the surroundings' feel. Also something that offered complete privacy.

Why they chose this property

While we have enjoyed staying at many different types of beautiful places, from very luxurious 'cabin-style' homes with every possible amenity, to some of the cabin 'communities', (places where there isn't as much privacy as sometimes advertised) we immediately fell in love with the peaceful seclusion and tranquility that 'High Lonesome' offered. While sitting privately on 20 acres on the mountainside, it is surrounded by national forests and steep slopes of private land assuring that it will always remain secluded.

What makes this property unique

It's location is also ideal. Far enough away from the more 'touristy' areas of the mountains yet close enough to get to them if you desire. The only possible issue for some will be the steepness of the gravel drive, but the new driveway is in and working out well. For us, a small price to pay for the seclusion and privacy that comes along with it. While every stay in this beautiful area is a fantastic one, what we offer at High Lonesome is location....and if you are seeking a truly private, peaceful getaway with post card views and more stars than you'll see at a planetarium....you will love it!
