Photos and Description of this Sturgeon Bay holiday cottage

4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Loft, Sleeps 14

Welcome! We know you'll love our waterfront home as you make memories with friends and family.

Kill Kare is a complete and modernized cottage, available for rentals throughout the year. While only two miles from the city limits of Sturgeon Bay, you'll feel secluded and refreshed here. The water is shallow, situated on an area of the bay called ''the flats''. It's known for great fishing, boating, and swimming. During some years, it's possible for an average height adult to walk over 300 yards into the bay before it is over his or her head. Additionally, there is a sand bar, often exposed, about 75 yards off shore, which is a great place to bring the children for a fun diversion. (During the Winter the bay freezes over entirely - perfect for skating, broomball, snowshoeing, or hiking.)

There are no inhabited dwellings on the lots adjacent to Kill Kare, so it truly is a secluded environment. Potawatomi State Park is just across the bay, so the view is unhampered.

There are no city lights to dim your nighttime view of the stars as you gather around the bonfire on the beach. The driveway is long and tree-lined, isolating you from Highway BB and any traffic noise.

''Kill Kare'' is the name that our grandfather, Louis H. Nebel, gave to this wonderful getaway on Wisconsin's Door County Peninsula. Maybe his love of Shakespeare prevailed, envisioning a place where all cares, worries would be killed. He was Door County's first electrical contractor, and though his residence was only two miles away in Sturgeon Bay, like any businessman, he valued his retreat place. The cottage has been our family gathering place ever since, a place where four generations now have forged their fondest memories.

Our grandfather originally purchased this property in November of 1922...for $750! He paid his mortgage off in two years. Then, in 1935 he secured a mortgage of $5,400 to construct the first phase of the building.

Over the years Kill Kare grew in a piecemeal fashion--adding a sun porch and a small upstairs loft. Then, in 1999, our mother, Helen Nebel, saw to it that the building would be expanded and renovated to serve future generations. When she died in 2002 her will specified that the cottage somehow stay in the family, with rentals allowed to provide for upkeep and taxes - but not as an income property, per se.

*Today Kill Kare is a modernized 4 plus bedroom home, secluded and situated on over 100 feet of private sand beach, available for year-round rentals. You'll gather a sense of our family's history here, and perhaps you'll start to gather a sense of your own. We just love this place, reserving enough family time each year to keep the sense of home and heritage alive. And though most of us no longer live in Door County, we make routine pilgrimages back home - to kill our cares. You'll see why.

Great location and property.

  • 4 of 5

Our family enjoyed our first visit to Sturgeon Bay. Kill Kare property is just how we pictured it. Homey, comfortable, just step out the door and you are on the sand beach and water. Gorgeous sunsets and huge firepit! Tom, the owner, is great to work with, responded quickly to my emails and allowed a late checkout, which we wound up not needing!! Our only complaints: the house was not as clean as we are use to with other VRBO rentals-the upstairs had a lot of cobwebs and spiders indicating it had not been cleaned in awhile, slightly dusty upstairs and down-blinds, windows, wooden chairs. The kitchen and bathrooms were clean. Towels were left in the washer that we dried, folded and put away. We were also surprised to find that we not only provided sheets and towels, we had to purchase ALL paper products-TP, paper towels, kleenex, and dishwasher soap! Overall nice stay, but in the future I will be more thorough in asking what is provided and what is not.

This was our fourth year vacationing at the cottage and we love it.

  • 5 of 5

Our entire family, parents, adult children, and grandchildren, were at KillKare for a week the end of August. We have been going to the Sturgeon Bay area since 1979 and are so happy we found KillKare four years ago when the place we had stayed before was no longer available. KillKare always feels like home when we arrive, very clean, a big well stocked kitchen, plenty of space for everyone, beautiful beach and fire pit. Love the front room with a large window overlooking the bay, it is a great place to enjoy your morning coffee.

At the cottage, we enjoyed playing in the sand and water, fishing from the pier, kayaking, watching awesome sunsets over Potowatomi Park, evening fires with s'mores, bird watching right on the property (eagles, pelicans, kingfisher, a variety of warblers, catbirds, cardinals....)

For outings, we had a great breakfast at Kimz, downtown Sturgeon Bay; pizza at the Wild Tomato in Sister Bay was also a favorite of our group; after lunch we hung out at the Sister Bay beach/shoreline/park area--very nice too. Shopping downtown Sturgeon Bay shops is a fun way to spend an afternoon.

We would recommend KillKare and plan on coming back next year!

Beautiful Property!!

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay at Kill Kare. We had some issues at check in but a quick text to the owner and he did his best to resolve them. The location can't be beat!!!! Right on the bay, awesome pier, close to town. The location is so private and feels so secluded but yet you are a quick 5 minute drive to town. The fishing wasn't great but that didn't stop my Dad from spending every free minute fishing off that pier. We had amazing camp fires, swam a ton, we rented a pontoon from a place right down the bay and we were able to drive the pontoon right up to the pier at the house. We weren't sure about staying so far south in Door County but ended up LOVING the location. The downtown area in Sturgeon Bay was very nice and we loved the restaurants we visited. We went to all parts of the peninsula, including a day trip to Washington Island.

The only negative was that there is no AC and even with widows open and fans going it often was very hot inside. Luckily we spent most of our days outside or away from the house doing other activities.

For the price we paid, you CANNOT beat this rental.

15 yr old cried all the way home.

  • 4 of 5

Clean, cozy, pretty, comfortable, and so much more. We had our first Family Vacation and it was perfect. The high heat and humidity didn't bother us inside or out. The cross ventilation and a few fans kept everyone comfortable and able to sleep. The kitchen was well supplied and easy to work in. We celebrated our 51st Wedding anniversary and a 15th birthday while there. Our group ranged in age from 15 to 78 years old. Our only complaint is that the wooden steps were slippery when wet and the stone steps were uneven. We had a GREAT TIME. We would recommend this listing to others. The Wild Tomato, White Gull Inn and Chocolate Chicken were all enjoyed . Some of the group enjoyed Fun Land and Miniature golf.

Perfect family getaway

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough wonderful things about our stay! We took 2 grandparents, 2 sets of their adult children, and 2 small grandchildren to KillKare for a week at the end of June. We could not have had a better time, largely in part to this amazing property.

A few of our most favorite aspects of Kill Kare cottage:

1. The owners are so prompt with communication and accommodating to requests

2. The property is obviously well loved, and it felt like home. It was well stocked with kitchen supplies, toys, and had all the amenities we could need

3. The cottage sits on a secluded, SANDY beach with lots of outdoor toys, and the shore stays shallow for quite a way out so that all ages can enjoy water time

4. A huge window looks out onto the bay, at which we spent many mornings and evenings watching wildlife, boats, and lovely sunsets.

5. The location feels so private, and yet it is an easy drive to downtown sturgeon bay for groceries

6. Everyone in our group had our own space in the house, and great common areas for hanging out.

We will definitely be back!

Fire on the beach every night!

  • 5 of 5

When we drove down the driveway, my first impression was that we finally found a vacation rental that is perfect for our family. It was private yet surprisingly close to town, had a great beach, and the house was cozy. We had seven people in our party, and there was tons of room for more if we needed them. I was worried about the spiral staircase with my three small children, but my kids were more than fine using it.

The exterior: the house is surrounded by trees that opens up to the lake with a nice private beach. The lake itself is fairly shallow for yards out which is perfect for children on the sand or even in the kayak or canoe (provided). If my six-year-old tipped in the canoe, she would be able to touch the ground. There were plenty of fishermen in the area, and when I went in the kayak I could see the fish that they were trying to catch. There is a fire pit and plenty of chairs on the beach to use with a spectacular view. We would get home every day from piddling around the towns and make a fire first thing! The weather was pretty chilly this time of year so the fire was good for warming up as well as s'mores, hot dogs, etc. Being that you are on a lake, there are plenty of cob webs around so don't be alarmed when you see them.

The interior: you will be taken by the view of the lake by the front room! We drank lots of coffee and plenty of spotted cows in that room while watching the boats and sunsets. There is a cozy fireplace that we used one night adjacent to the front room. The kitchen isn't huge but big enough for our needs. The bedrooms were decent, and there was plenty of room with all the queen beds in the house for a much larger party that ours. Overall, you feel that you are in a warm space with plenty of family pictures on the walls to make you feel at home-not in a sterile vacation home. As you can tell, I loved the place. The house has tons of stuff in the cabinets for your use and the owners aren't stingy with small things like trash bags, paper towels, spices, and such. The house was also clean considering the sand that can easily be tracked in.

The location is really only about four minutes from Sturgeon Bay and the local grocery store, but you feel isolated from that when you are at the house. The owner was easy to work with, and he went out of his way to accommodate us when we had a last-minute change of plans. My only complaint was that I couldn't stay longer, but we plan on coming back next year
