I bought this church from the Roman Catholic Diocese 15 years ago.
25 foot cathedral ceilings, six burner cook stove, soapstone farm sink, double shower heads, two full baths, original stained glass with beautiful morning light. House yoga mats, gas fireplace, 40" flat screen with cable and couch and stuff chairs for lounging and talking, 9' cherry dining table
The stained glass is original and is illuminated each morning by the sunrise coming up over the hill. This stunning space is the result of a three year renovation. The curved walls and archways create a true sanctuary like space that is hard to leave once you are there.
Stratton Mountain is 30 minutes to the access road and under 35 to Mount Snow. Brattleboro, just five minutes away, has been voted consistently as one of the best small towns in America to visit. If you want to ski, snow shoe, shop, eat, sip local brew and explore the town, or never leave the Sanctuary, this is your spot!
The master suite is up in the extended 'choir loft' that I built out to make a spacious bedroom and dressing room, and has it's own full bath with double-headed shower and 54" claw-foot tub.
There are two beautiful, very small private rooms to the left and right of what used to be the altar. They feature curved walls, queen beds, and a large skylight in each. There is a full bathroom for these rooms with European style shower as well as full laundry for the house.
The kitchen is a chef's delight with a six burner, two grill, double oven Garland Restaurant gas stove, double soapstone farm sink and beautifully detailed concrete countertops. Lots of counter space and a large farm table island in the middle provide adequate prep, serving and 'hang out' space (everyone seems to love to congregate in the kitchen!).
The heat is radiant floor which is wonderful for this space with 25' vaulted ceilings. There is also a propane instant on-demand glass door fireplace on the 'altar' for ambience throughout the space and cozying up to after a day on the mountains.
The TV lounge under the choir loft has couches and a lounge chair for watching movies, reading and relaxing. We have cable, Netflix and Amazon capability through the Blue Ray player, and of course, high speed Internet.
There are country roads for walking, a wonderful river to visit nearby, a great neighborhood if you want to make friends, and the US post office right in the village.
This is a most welcoming and generous space for one to six!
Nick and I manage this lovely space together. It was my home from 2001 to 2008 when I met Nick. He came to live with me in 2009, then his two dapper teenage boys, at which point we bought the house next door as more of a family home. The boys are now at college, and Nick and I are back to being full time artists. I am a ceramic artist (my website is my full name NatalieBlake dot com if you are interested!) and Nick is a designer/builder and yoga instructor. Our studios are right in town, and we are very involved in the arts and music. Our families live in the surrounding towns, and we spend time with them and our friends.
Our next life adventures include owning and running Fulcrum Arts Gallery which is three miles from the house-- a twenty artists collective showing my ceramics, Nick's furniture, our partners blown artglass, jewelry, lighting and more-- and studying permaculture and shamanism in South America. Much afoot!
We love cooking, and therefore great kitchens, and most of all, we love to create great spaces so that friends and families can let down and have a great getaway.
Natalie Blake purchased this apartment in 2001
Who doesn't want to live in a church with red curvy couches for even two days?
Beautiful, full of art and intrigue
Easy walks to beautiful places all year round.
A great middle point between a great art town with great restaurants and shops, and the ski mountains.
Close to Brattleboro--- named #8 best smal art towns in America
close to all kinds of Vermont activities, from skiing to apple picking to summer festivals and swimming....
We look forward to your stay!
Four friends and I stayed at "the Sanctuary" for a week in August 2016. What a treat! The house is a work of art in itself. Nice renovation. Hand crafted ceramics, amazing blown glass, and other original artwork are found in every nook and cranny. Amazing kitchen, perfect for entertaining. Comfortable beds. Lots of space. The house has some quirks, but I found them to be a part of the fun and reflective of the laid back vibe of Vermont. If you're the kind of person who has to have everything in perfect order, you might be frustrated. For example, the downstairs bathroom has an open shower. Yup, no curtains, no easily defined shower space. A shower head on the wall and a drain on the floor in the same area as the sink and the toilet. Yes, not what you expect, but hey, why not? It works perfectly fine. Finding all of the corresponding light switches for the lights in the main living area was like a game. Some of them were in the most unexpected places, but that was part of the charm. Basically, everything we needed and more was there to have a satisfying, restful week. Everyone in our group loved the house.
Great location, about 15 minutes from downtown Brattleboro. A short drive to lots of scenic areas. So relaxing swimming in the West River and Rock River. Great area to walk or cycle. For grocery shopping, the Brattleboro Coop is a must. Want a good sandwich or have a sweet tooth? Amy's Bakery Arts Cafe will satisfy your need. Want to see a Brattleboro tradition? Check out the Saturday farmer's market in West Brattleboro where locals and tourists mix. The Sanctuary provides a great home base to enjoy nature, food, arts, and music.
The owners were warm, welcoming, helpful. Communication was clear. Deposit returned with no hassle. A delightful stay at a most unusual home.
I surprised my 3 kids with a stay in Natalie and Nick's place and we were all impressed and pleased beyond words. The house is warm and inviting with all the amenities one can think of. We were very comfortable and enjoyed our stay immensely. You will not be disappointed. Quite the opposite, really. Thank you both for sharing your home with us.
A group of friends and I spent a weekend in Natalie's church and found it to be even better than expected! The house is spacious and charming, with beautiful artistic touches throughout. I highly recommend it- we may even go back!
I have stayed in several rentals and this is top 3 on my list, I absolutely love this chapel.
At first I had thought that it may be weird to stay in a renovated church, but it's not at all. The energy in the house was great, very soothing and relaxing. The kitchen is so much fun to cook in, love the cutting board island it made it super easy for me to prepare my food and the stove is so big I could prepare a feast! The Ed in the loft is so comfortable I could sleep for days. The living room areas are so inviting, we used all three, why not change up the scene. I practice yoga everyday and sure dbihgh there were plenty of mats, near the fireplace was a perfect spot to loosen up. I even gathered some blankets and pillows and cudgeled in front of it afterwards with my honey!
The location is quietly nestled at the top of the hill in a one road community. It was rhe perfect in between location to Stratton mountain and Batttleboro. The little town had everything we needed and then some. The have a lovely co-op filled with plenty of organic items. They have a brewery that plays live music on Thursday nights, which was super fun and friendly. There is a great spa, Jasmine day spa they do super unique packages if your there in the winter time I highly suggest the "winter retreat" package. There was also a great little shop that does readings right next door with cool little trinkets.
The host is super friendly and flexible, she even let me have my package delivered there a few days before I arrived and let me have a late check out since I lost track of time.
So there you have it! I can only give this place 5 stars but in my book it's a 10!
My family (including our two dogs) booked a post Christmas week vacation at the church. Was an easy experience with the owners from start to finish. They even came over to help dig my car out after some snow.
The property itself was open and welcoming. Very unique! More than enough room for 3 couples. There is much to do in the surrounding area. Ski, hike or just enjoy the peace and quiet. Close enough drive to town for dinner or drinks.
We had a wonderful time. Thank you Nick and Natalie, we will be back!
We are thirty mins from Stratton and Mt Snow. Brattleboro, five miles south, has been listed several times as #1 small art towns to visit in the US.

We do have an apartment downstairs with full time tenants. We do ask that loud music or loud thumps on the floor be kept to a minimum. Generally the floor noise is the most bothersome since it is unpredicatble to someone living below. We want guests to feel totally comfortable and feel at home in the church as a weekend away to chill and relax. So we ask you to take your shoes off when you come in the door, refrain from knocking dirt or snow off your boots on the front step, and walk around in socks or barefoot on our lovely warm radiant heated floors!
