Cozy Converted Barn on Secluded 6.5 acres

Bedrooms 1

Space 153 m²
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 2 - 4 nights

Overview

About the property

1 bedroom + large loft, 1 bathroom, sleeps 4 comfortably (8 max).

Spend the month, week or weekend in a beautiful rustic converted barn on 6.5 very private sunny country acres with southerly long-range views of Mt. Anthony and the Bennington Monument (Stays of 2 or more weeks are progressively discounted depending on the length of the stay). Wander the park-like trails through 4 acres of old apple orchard and woodland. Why get a bed and breakfast when you can have a house and land all to yourself? This vacation rental is located in southwestern Vermont, less than 12 minutes from downtown Bennington (but still feels very quiet and secluded). Pick apples, bird-watch, and view other wildlife like deer, grouse, wild turkeys, rabbits, and an occasional black bear that wanders through the property. Excellent fly fishing on the nearby Battenkill river. Attend the summer horse shows in nearby Manchester. Enjoy the world-famous Vermont fall foliage. Watch the flowers bloom in the spring. Enjoy a bon-fire in the back-yard. Five major ski areas are located within an hour's drive. House is fully furnished and has slate shower, bear-claw bath tub, gas cooking stove, microwave, refrigerator, dish washer, cable, DVD/VCR, and wireless internet, plus two wood stoves and free wood to keep you warm at night (There's also central air heating and a portable air-conditioner if needed). There's a large downstairs master bedroom with its own gas stove/fireplace for ambiance and extra heat. There is a living room, dining area, and another small room that could sleep 2 with large electric blowup mattress on site. A spiral staircase leads up to a large loft with a full-sized spring mattress futon. There's also a love seat that pulls out into a double size bed. The barnhouse was actually part of a large picturesque Vermont farm just up the dirt road (and view-able from parts of the property) until it was rolled down on logs and converted into a house some years ago.

*** Although the website lists my cancellation policy as "no refund" this is not quite true (It's just that none of the other options I was given matched my actual cancellation policy). Please refer to the "Generic Rental Agreement" pdf that you will be able to view once you start the booking process (and must agree to before making payment) for details on my cancellation policy.

*** Contact me for additional information on steep discounts for stays of 2 or more weeks.

About Lars

Lars (pictured here with his childhood sweetheart and wife Kristen) teaches high school biology, chemistry, and environmental science just outside of Philadelphia. He is a VERY avid skier who also enjoys camping, hiking, mountaineering, kite-surfing, watching the Minnesota Vikings, and spending time with his wife and children. Kristen teaches electronic engineering at the college level and is an avid wind surfer, hiker, and quickly improving skier.

Lars purchased this barn in 2003

Why Lars chose Shaftsbury

This is the perfect property to relax and unwind in total privacy. Vermont in general is a very relaxed, friendly place. If you are looking for stress reduction, a romantic get-away, and tons of outdoor activities, you found the perfect place.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We recently spent one week at the barn during Thanksgiving. It was an idyllic place, perfect for relaxing and spending time with family and friends. The barn was warm and cozy. It took very little effort to keep the wood stove going. I could see myself spending a month at the barn - hibernating with a pile of books and taking leisurely walks around the property. It was very comfortable to share with three teenage girls. They occupied the loft area and we had a bedroom to ourselves. Thanks you Lars!

Awesome place to stay in Vermont

  • 5 of 5

I would like to join all the rave reviews about Lars place because it is absolutely marvellous. Everything is arranged with great concern for people, all makes you feel relaxed and enjoy every minute of your stay in this charming house and its no less beautiful surroundings. Those are peculiar furniture items, the most comfortable fancy bed and leather recliner (our favourite), a fireplace, rustic but well equipped kitchen, stunning views from the kitchen and from the bathroom. Due to the heavy rain days we spent a lot of time inside of the barn, so that we could fully appreciate it and we were happy to find out that we din't want to leave anywhere. After the rain had stopped it was a pleasure for us to walk around the nearby grounds and to discover hidden corners with old lawn furniture or other "surprises".

To summarize, the barn was much above our expectations, and the words can not do our impressions justice.

Lars deserves no end of praise. He is the most attentive, responsive, helpful, patient and easy to communicate host. He was always reachable, ready to answer all our questions and he could not do more for us than he did. Thank you very much Lars from all my family. It was a good luck to chose your place!

Cozy Vermont stay

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this barn converted into a home. The owner was very helpful and checked in with us making sure we had everything we needed. I highly recommend staying here. Everything we needed was very close while still making you feel like you are living in the country.

Sooooo many great qualities!

  • 5 of 5

I've been a repeat customer to Lars' barn for 3 years. It has so many great qualities about it that keeps me coming back. Here's a few on the top of my list:

- Lars is easy to work with and has the place clean and ready for you. He is quick to respond to questions or any problems.

- The Barn is Exceptional! From the wood beams to the floor. It's easy to get lost just looking at the place. Extra cozy with the wood burning stove in the winter. Outdoor fire pit with Amish made furniture is perfectly seated on top of the property for STAR GAZING.

- The property has an encapsulated open 2-3 acres for great views and privacy with an additional few wooded acres for just wandering.

- Within minutes from Bennington. History, shopping, and underrated craft beers.

- Located perfectly to enjoy a number of great skiing mountains in the winter or the Green Mountains during the other seasons.

I 'm torn when writing this review because the more people that know about it's charm the less time will be available for me to come for a visit. However, this is an honest review and my wife and I love coming back year after year. Cheers Lars.

Great Barn. Good skiing. Spectacular views. Friendly owner. Need anything else?

  • 5 of 5

Spent a few days in the barn over New Years with my girlfriend and it was an amazing vacation. Really cannot say enough about how great the stay was and how friendly Lars was. He was always just a text away if we needed anything and was quick to respond to questions. Whatever you do be sure to read the welcome letter prior to arrival! It has some great information about the local area. Also, definitely be sure to say hello when you get there.

We were lucky enough to have a few inches of fresh snow right before our arrival so it was beautiful when we got there. The Barn was spectacular and it gives you that countryside/log cabin experience that can be hard to come by in the metropolitan Northeast. Being just 10-15 minutes from Bennington meant that it was easy for us to do some food shopping and aside from groceries, there was nothing else that the Barn lacked. The wood stove and view from the kitchen window were my two favorite aspects and I definitely recommend waking up a little early to catch the sunrise.

In addition to the Barn, Shaftsbury/Bennington is a great area. There are plenty of great places to eat at or to get things to cook if that is more your style. If you are worried about snow, the area had gotten ~6 inches of snow before our arrival but the following day the roads were pretty clear the day of check-in. There were two great ski areas that we visited. Bromley and Mount Snow. Would recommend Mount Snow since it had more trails, better amenities, and easier trails for beginners. Nonetheless, there are plenty of choices within 30 - 45 minutes of the Barn.

Would absolutely recommend a stay for a romantic getaway, ski trip, or countryside excursion.

Beautiful property close to everything

  • 5 of 5

My (now) husband and I rented Lars' barn as a base of operations for our destination wedding in New York. We had never been to Bennington or the surrounding area, and it was so much more lovely than we imagined. I don't think photos really capture how great the place actually is, and this charming barn truly became a key feature of our wedding week. We loved that it was secluded and rustic while still having every amenity. It is a very short drive into town and local attractions, including some beautiful hiking trails and Woodford State Park if you're planning to spend time enjoying nature (although the barn itself should satisfy that!). Lars was easy to communicate with and gave us detailed instructions about how to use different features of the house, where to visit, etc. I would stay here again and I would recommend staying here to anyone who was thinking about visiting the area.
