Overview

Photos and Description of this Awakino holiday house

Bach or holiday home, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, (Sleeps 12)

Absolutely fabulous South and West views over Mokau Beach all the way past White Cliffs to Mt Taranaki. Stroll on spacious, wild and exhilarating beaches with bleached driftwood and big surf. Warm and very cozy whatever the season and love the Sundowners ! You really won't want to go home.

"Mokino" is situated in a friendly cluster of 7 houses midway between Mokau and Awakino (3mins by car). Shared foot track provides direct access to the beach below, a right turn will bring you to a small cave and waterfall. Great fishing from the beach (kite/torpedo) or cast a line at the Mokau or Awakino river mouths, also whitebait during season (August 15 to November 30). Excellent beach and cliff walks in the area (beach islands and loads of caves to explore). At high tide Mokau river has sheltered swimming/boating, particularly when sea is rough.

Our family bach is well equipped - just bring your personal items, food, towels and linen (sheets and pillow cases - sleeping bags for kids). Great for 2 families, with 12 beds (king double, queen double, 2x double/single bunks, 2x single), and a further 2+ possible.

Upstairs has bathroom with shower, master bedroom, sunny porch room with queen double, and spacious kitchen/lounge/dining area dominated by huge picture windows facing Nth, Sth and W. In winter, all made cosy by ceiling panel heaters.

Downstairs comprises lounge with single bed, double/single bunk; kitchen with table and chairs; shower; and bedroom (double/single bunk, single bed). A second toilet is outside adjacent to the downstairs entrance. Electric heaters available for downstairs.

North side of the house has a flat, sunny sheltered lawn (ok for tents). Garden only partially fenced.

Mokau has 2 cafes, rural butcher, 9 hole 'summer' golf course and plenty of local history at the museum. Awakino has a hotel, bottleshop and restaurant with accommodation. Highly recommend the Blue Boat cruise, on Mokau River

Kiwi bach with heaps of character!

  • 4 of 5

Kiwi bach with heaps of character! Sitting atop the cliffs between Mokau and Awakino, this family bach has sensational west coast views from the second story (including the bedrooms!). A track to the beach requires a fair amount of bushwhacking and a sense of adventure but the beach and nearby waterfall are fantastic. The kitchen has lots of utensils and cookware but be sure to take along any basics ie salt and pepper, oils etc if you intend to cook. Will hopefully stay here again in the future!

Great spot! Beaut north facing windows warmed us all in between rain showers.

Great spot! Beaut north facing windows warmed us all in between rain showers. Fantastic deck. Comfortable beds. The stairs down to the bunk-rooms are external, so not ideal for little ones, but it all worked.

Neat to be able to walk down to the beach and explore.

Great little classic kiwi bach.

Great little classic kiwi bach. We loved staying so close to the stormy beach, and keeping warm and cosy inside with our kids with the books, toys and games provided. Would love to stay again.
