The orginal Kawau Island Schoolhouse built in the 1870's is a 6 -7 bedroom waterfront bach. It is rustic and guests need to be prepared to open up the house themselves, turn on water pumps and make up beds.
It offers a real kiwi bach experience on a large scale. The bach runs on a combination of bore water and pump water. The island does not have roads but has great walks and boating, swimming, fishing.
Catch the Kawau Kat, water taxi or private boat to the Schoolhouse bay jetty and walk straight into the Schoolhouse. Please be aware that this really is a kiwi bach - it is in a beautiful location and has heaps of room but it is quite basic in some ways. There is no cleaner available on the island and you will find the bach as the last tenants left it. Please leave it clean and tidy for the next tenants. We live 6 hours away and give it a good clean when we come up. You are welcome to use the duvets but you need to bring sheets and pillow cases and/or a sleeping bag. The lack of a cleaning service and rustic charm is reflected in the price which is good value for the size and location.
We limit numbers due to water issues. Maximum number of adult guests is 8.

The property is a great size for a large family or a group of friends.
We will definately be back next year
Location, charm & big enough to accommodate 3 families & the dog.
Fantastic location with lovely space and spaces to enjoy. Great having an open fire that never went out, keeping our water skiers happy. Feasted on freshly caught fish, family fun and solid sleeps. Thank you for sharing your house.
We had a great stay and the location of the Schoolhouse is perfect for boaties. The house is rustic but purpose suited to a large crowd and the fireplace made it perfect for a winter stay. We very much enjoyed our stay - just wish it could have been longer!
This property has a lot of character with a beautiful beach front setting. We were 2 couples in a large house which could handle more people. This bach would be great for a large Family gathering and we are hoping to get back there again next year. Thanks Michele for chance to share your bach. Brett and Lynelle Southey
Fantastic stay, brilliant house, great location. The kids and adults loved it. So much room in the house and gardens and land around...no one got bored. Will be back!
