Overview

Photos and Description of this Raglan holiday house

Bach or holiday home, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, (Sleeps 4)

Rua Totara meaning 'A pair of Totara trees'. This is the theme which runs throughout the property and into the interiors where you will find many 'pairs of things'.

This property is not your modern bach of today. If you need inspiration or some much needed timeout, then this is the place for you. Just 1hr 40mins drive from Auckland or 30 minutes from Hamilton city... Rua Totara is nestled amongst native trees on a hillside overlooking the beautiful Raglan Harbour.

She's been lovingly put together by designer, Kathryn Taylor, who brought this 1950s bach in 2005. Each item in the bach has been specially found, recycled and spruced up to create a true-to-life 1950s getaway. Rua Totara is made up of a series of small separate rooms which you walk between, under a covered veranda. This is one of the many little quirks which make your stay super unique and enjoyable.

Rua Totara has no mod-cons. This allows you to unwind immediately from city-life; relax on the deck, read a book, write some music or bake some cheese scones in the best oven you have ever used. You will find a great little music collection and an extensive range of books, both old and new.

This property is ideal for an artists retreat, couples, small families or a maximum gathering of 4-5 friends. There is an incredible garden spanning down from the property which has magical spots to relax, explore, read or play. Parental guidance is encouraged for the deck and garden.

She has plenty of sun in both summer and winter, where you can live with all the doors open or use one of the many woollen rugs available for outdoor sitting.

Rua Totara is the perfect place for artists to escape and she has become a favourite for many NZ musicians and writers to bunk down and enjoy the peace. This property is excellent for reconnecting with yourself, your family or just snuggling up to have those well-needed conversations with life, that we often don't make time for.

Special conditions:

Smoking only allowed outside and butts to be collected. The deck and wild gardens require parental guidence for small children. Pets potentially accepted with prior approval.

Extras: Cleaning (Required, NZ$60.00 per stay); Bed Linen and Towels (Optional, NZ$20.00 per person); NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Bring your own linen (towels/sheets/tea towels);

lovely, quirky bach. Wasn't expecting the layout of isolated rooms but actually worked well. The bedrooms especially with the deck having great sunshine and views!

We absolutely loved our stay at Rua Totara. It was soo peaceful and relaxing... we loved everything about the bach... from the amazing artwork, the retro furnishings, the taps in the kitchen..(supa cool!), we would love to come back again!! The bach was spotless as well with very nice linen. A perfect weekend away.. Thank you so much :)

Perfect location - easy access to town and the wharf.

Perfect location - easy access to town and the wharf. Beautiful views, stunning on a rainy Sunday morning. I found myself spending a lot of time on the deck. The unusual layout is a plus in my opinion - Nothing like something a little bit different :)

The only wee issue I had was getting in/out of the drive - wasn't expecting it to be so steep, and my little manual vehicle found reversing out of it quite challenging!

The 'bach' is a teeny set of separate rooms, so not for everyone.

The 'bach' is a teeny set of separate rooms, so not for everyone. However, we enjoyed it's quirky retro feel, the great location (set up the hill from the wharf) and the views of Karioi mountain and the harbour. Would definitely recommend for one-person artist or yoga retreat. Go off-grid and salute the all-day sun with some yoga or sketch the views on the deck.

A very unique and charming place with soul-soothing views.

A very unique and charming place with soul-soothing views. The neighbours were quite close and a bit noisy at times (and lacking in parenting skills) - so if you're looking for absolute peace and quiet then maybe not the right choice, but overall we had a lovely time. Such a handy location, full of beautiful details, interesting books and so cosy... it kinda has a hipster cafe vibe, like Crave in Kingsland (Auckland) :)

Old style bach and a good base for Raglan.

Old style bach and a good base for Raglan. Would not suit if one wanted an indoor social area, but perfect for us.
