Cozy Secluded Log Cabin Tucked Under Towering Cliffs Flanked By Massive Boulders

Nestled under the sandstone bluffs that nature carved out of Rocky Hollow, things are quiet, easy going, and perfect for your holiday away from it all. Here lies Big Rock Log Cabin tucked away in the Kentucky mountains yet only minutes away from Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest. After a day of fishing, hiking, or rock climbing, Big Rock is a wonderful place to come home to. Relax on a large covered porch complete with comfortable lounge chairs and table. Come ready to grill out on the porch at the gas grill and eat out under the trees at a picnic table nestled up in Big Rock Hollow. Big Rock Log Cabin beckons you to slow down, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, all in the comfort of a cozy & well furnished log cabin, or lean back in a lounge chair inside Big Rock’s own rock shelter. Big Rock Cabin is fully furnished with new furniture and antiques, creating a cozy, comfortable feeling. All linens, blankets and towels are furnished so all you need to bring are food, drink, and personal items. Central air and heat will keep you comfortable any time of the year. Big Rock Cabin has a bath and a half plus a Jacuzzi. Do you like to cook? We just finished the new galley style kitchen that is fully furnished with refrigerator, electric stove, dish washer, microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and all the utensils you need for cooking, eating, and drinking. Don’t want to cook? During the season Big Rock is only 5 minutes away from great pizza, subs, or a full buffet dinner. That’s the nice thing about Big Rock, it’s close to everything, but when you top the ridge and drive down into Rocky Hollow you are suddenly away from it all. Natural Bridge State Park is only 5 minute drive where you can enjoy hiking trails, swimming pool, fishing lake, or dinner in the resort lodge. Five minutes more and you are in the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest with it’s forest and mountain trails leading to huge natural stone arches and fantastic views of cliff lined valleys. You can even enjoy the trails with your dog in the National Forest. This is a wonderful, undiscovered part of nature where you will see breath taking views without hoards of people. There isn’t a stop light for 20 miles. Come to the Kentucky Mountains and stay at Big Rock Log Cabin. This is a family cabin and not for parties so no spring breakers please.

About John Glover

Originally an archaeologist but for many years I have dealt in antiquarian books and historic documents with my bookstore Glover's Bookery. I live in downtown Lexington, KY but am a nut for the great outdoors, thus Big Rock was born [my life saver].

John Glover purchased this cabin in 2005

Why John Glover chose Natural Bridge

Big Rock is only a hour from Lexington yet located in the most beautiful deep woods natural area in Kentucky surrounded by cliffy wilderness. I bought Big Rock specifically because it is a Log cabin (a must), was unfinished (so I could finish the inside like I wanted), is under the cliff (my golden retrievers don't know what a cliff edge is), the property has interesting features (massive block boulders, a rock house, and gorilla rock), and lastly is close to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge (Natural Bridge State Park shares a back property line with Big Rock). Fell head over heels for it the moment I saw it.

What makes this cabin unique

New log cabin yet cozy, rustic, and inviting. All wood everywhere, not a drop of paint or sheetrock to be found. Nestled under a 40 foot sandstone cliff with flanked by block boulders the size of a house. Just steps from a huge rock shelter (the rock house) and Gorilla Rock. The cabin if full of unique Folk Art from all over rural American as well as from my travels.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As my husband said, He brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best surprises I ever had. This place is magic. So many thing to appreciate (the cabin, the design, decoration, camp fire outside, every thing clean, cozy, prepared with so much love!..). The natural beauty surrounding the cabin is just surreal. I barely went to sleep. The excitement of being here was great. Now we are leaving I almost feel depressed, I don’t want to go back to reality but also a feeling of joy and hope we will come back soon!

I live in Stanford, KY but I’m originally from Sad Paulo, Brazil and this is one of the most beautiful place I visited, love U all, Thanks for everything

GREAT COZY MOUNTAIN CABIN

  • 5 of 5

We three couples enjoyed our 5 nights at this special cabin. The location is very close to all that Natural Bridge State Park and the Red River Gorge National Park area. We have rented several homes around the world through HomeAway/VRBO, all have been as advertised and better; however, this one has a special feel about it because of it's location, under a rock wall and all of the display of unique art. It is especially well equiped and if anything is missing, just call the owner and he will be glad to help. We hope to rent it again.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for coming to Kentucky's Natural Bridge, Red River Gorge and chosen Big Rock Log Cabin. I fell in love with Big Rock the moment I saw it's setting under the cliff and the cabin size bolders that it gets it's name from. We look forward to your return. John

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just spent this past week celebrating our anniversary at Big Rock Cabin. It could not have been more perfect. From the comfort of the cabin to the weather- it was a perfect week.

John - thank you so much for sharing your cabin! We absolutely loved the seclusion and the quiet. We hiked every day and this was a convenient location for accessing the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge areas. The cabin is very clean and the beds are comfortable. It was just the 2 of us - but the cabin accommodates more if needed. We did actually use one of the upstairs beds ( this was our 32nd anniversary and we get along fine- but sleep much better if we have separate beds- LOL- someone tosses and turns and maybe snores- not saying who) My husband appreciated having a bathroom available upstairs as this is where he slept. Typically when we have stayed in a cabin where the beds are up in a loft there is not a bathroom in the loft- so this was a real plus in the middle of the night.

The kitchen had everything we needed. We made breakfast and dinner there almost every day- except 1 night we got Miguel's pizza- highly recommended. There was plenty of seating in the living area and it was very comfortable for reading or watching TV.

Lastly, we love the art! John has a fabulous collection. My favorite is the salamander above the patio door.

Best cabin I have ever stayed in

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful, Beautiful, secluded. The fire pit area was definitely a huge reason for all to stay here. Also owner couldn't be nicer. I have stayed in many cabins and have not returned but will be returning to this one.

Big Rock rocks!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our visit to this cabin! My favorite part was the fire pit! The location is superb, near Natural Bridge (where we were able to catch a fabulous sunrise!) and also Red River Rockhouse and Miguel's! But, as he says in the description, you also feel secluded. It's the best of both worlds! We have already reserved it again, thanks, John!

Relaxing getaway near Red River Gorge

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Big Rock was better than we could have hoped! We enjoyed relaxing on the porch in the mornings and around the campfire at night. The cabin seemed secluded but it was only a 10 minute drive to Red River Gorge. Definitely recommend to anyone looking for a cabin near Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park.

An amazing girls weekend!

  • 5 of 5

Loved the place! It had everything we needed for a amazing weekend away from the city. The place was clean and very comfortable. Cool art everywhere. So enjoyed the fire pit under the rock overhang. Could use a new gas grill. Middle burner catches, but the other two did not want to catch fire. With a long match easily got all of them working. Hope to come back again sometime time.

Owner's Response: It was wonderful to have you as our guest at Big Rock. So glad you enjoyed your stay. Thanks for the heads up on the grill. There are short tubes that concert the center burner, to the flanking burners that facilitate lighting them. When the grill is moved they can fall off. I must figure out a way to wire them in. Hope you will be back to the Gorge and enjoy a really beautiful part of Kentucky.
