About the property

Cozy Secluded Log Cabin Tucked Under Towering Cliffs Flanked By Massive Boulders

Nestled under the sandstone bluffs that nature carved out of Rocky Hollow, things are quiet, easy going, and perfect for your holiday away from it all. Here lies Big Rock Log Cabin tucked away in the Kentucky mountains yet only minutes away from Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest. After a day of fishing, hiking, or rock climbing, Big Rock is a wonderful place to come home to. Relax on a large covered porch complete with comfortable lounge chairs and table. Come ready to grill out on the porch at the gas grill and eat out under the trees at a picnic table nestled up in Big Rock Hollow. Big Rock Log Cabin beckons you to slow down, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, all in the comfort of a cozy & well furnished log cabin, or lean back in a lounge chair inside Big Rock’s own rock shelter. Big Rock Cabin is fully furnished with new furniture and antiques, creating a cozy, comfortable feeling. All linens, blankets and towels are furnished so all you need to bring are food, drink, and personal items. Central air and heat will keep you comfortable any time of the year. Big Rock Cabin has a bath and a half plus a Jacuzzi. Do you like to cook? We just finished the new galley style kitchen that is fully furnished with refrigerator, electric stove, dish washer, microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and all the utensils you need for cooking, eating, and drinking. Don’t want to cook? During the season Big Rock is only 5 minutes away from great pizza, subs, or a full buffet dinner. That’s the nice thing about Big Rock, it’s close to everything, but when you top the ridge and drive down into Rocky Hollow you are suddenly away from it all. Natural Bridge State Park is only 5 minute drive where you can enjoy hiking trails, swimming pool, fishing lake, or dinner in the resort lodge. Five minutes more and you are in the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest with it’s forest and mountain trails leading to huge natural stone arches and fantastic views of cliff lined valleys. You can even enjoy the trails with your dog in the National Forest. This is a wonderful, undiscovered part of nature where you will see breath taking views without hoards of people. There isn’t a stop light for 20 miles. Come to the Kentucky Mountains and stay at Big Rock Log Cabin. This is a family cabin and not for parties so no spring breakers please.

About John Glover

John Glover: Originally an archaeologist but for many years I have dealt in antiquarian books and historic documents with my bookstore Glover's Bookery. I live in downtown Lexington, KY but am a nut for the great outdoors, thus Big Rock was born [my life saver].

Anne Glover: electrical engineer, started with IBM and continued on with Lexmark.

John Glover purchased this cabin in 2005

Why John Glover chose Pine Ridge

Big Rock is only a hour from Lexington yet located in the most beautiful deep woods natural area in Kentucky surrounded by cliffy wilderness. I bought Big Rock specifically because it is a Log cabin (a must), was unfinished (so I could finish the inside like I wanted), is under the cliff (my golden retrievers don't know what a cliff edge is), the property has interesting features (massive block boulders, a rock house, and gorilla rock), and lastly is close to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge (Natural Bridge State Park shares a back property line with Big Rock). Fell head over heels for it the moment I saw it.

What makes this cabin unique

New log cabin yet cozy, rustic, and inviting. All wood everywhere, not a drop of paint or sheetrock to be found. Nestled under a 40 foot sandstone cliff with flanked by block boulders the size of a house. Just steps from a huge rock shelter (the rock house) and Gorilla Rock. The cabin is full of unique Folk Art from all over rural American as well as from my travels.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As my husband said, He brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best surprises I ever had. This place is magic. So many thing to appreciate (the cabin, the design, decoration, camp fire outside, every thing clean, cozy, prepared with so much love!..). The natural beauty surrounding the cabin is just surreal. I barely went to sleep. The excitement of being here was great. Now we are leaving I almost feel depressed, I don’t want to go back to reality but also a feeling of joy and hope we will come back soon!

I live in Stanford, KY but I’m originally from Sad Paulo, Brazil and this is one of the most beautiful place I visited, love U all, Thanks for everything

Enchanting

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic location and property. This is the 4th cabin that we have rented and by far the cleanest and my favorite. Such a quiet and peaceful location. If you want solitude then you will find it here. Want something to read or learn more about the area, then check out the book collection, where you will find something for every nature enthusiast. The owner obviously cares about his cabin and decorated it with things that he loves. The artwork from Kentucky artists was exceptional. Did you forget shampoo or a toothbrush, no worries the owner thought of it. Not too mention that we brought our 2 big dogs, who also loved the cabin. I want to come back and would 100% recommend to anyone.

Great getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, brother and sister-in-law, along with Finn, their black lab, stayed two nights just before Thanksgiving. We had a great time and Finn loved it as well! Although the weather turned rather cold the second day, we were able to explore the area by car and visited the lodge for a fabulous breakfast that morning. We lacked for nothing and enjoyed the secluded surroundings and, of course, the infamous fire pit and the indoor gas fireplace. So cozy! We were just so very comfortable and left completely relaxed and ready to face the craziness of the upcoming holidays. We haven't stopped talking about our trip. Our plan is to return in the spring or summer when the weather is a little milder and the days a little longer so that we can enjoy more of the trails and perhaps allow my husband to do a little fishing in the area.

Thank you so much, John, for sharing your magical place and for the hospitality you provided.

Beautiful central location

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely gorgeous property centrally located to the trails and things we wanted to do. It’s a very special place, the outside is amazing and when you have an evening fire it feels as if you’re in the backcountry. The cabin itself is beautifully decorated and super cool, definitely not your run of the mill pine cabin. The accommodations were well above and beyond what any host would need to provide. My parents and mother-in-law loved it as well as my baby who has started walking and had a blast outside exploring. My only complaint is no fault of the owner but some inconsiderate guests had littered some bottle caps and cigarette butts around that we found and disposed of. Definitely recommend, our folks are already talking about returning again. Thanks so much.

Owner's Response: Wonderful, super happy you enjoyed the Gorg and your stay at Big Rock. I must confess I have not been to the cabin in a couple months, it's always rented, so I am behind policing the grounds. I'll be there in a few days to decorate for Christmas and will take care of it. Look forward to having you again. John & Anne

Great accommodations and location

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was in great condition, clean, and contained all the amenities we needed. The location is perfectly situated near a rockhouse and far enough from the main highway that noise pollution is not an issue (unlike other cabins we have stayed in near the Red River Gorge). I would highly recommend this cabin and would definitely stay here again when revisiting the area.

Owner's Response: Thanks for coming to Big Rock and glad you enjoyed your stay. It took me more than a year and over 40 cabins to find Big Rock and the main reason it took so long was I did not want to hear traffic. Because I live downtown, when I go to Big Rock, I want and get peace and quiet. Add that to a campfire in the rockhouse, 100 feet out the back door makes it all wonderful. Hope to see you again. John

We loved the cabin and had a great time there. Will definitely plan to come back again.

  • 5 of 5

The cabin itself was well furnished, very attractive, clean and comfortable. There were a great many extras, such as a complete bookcase, games, etc. We really appreciated the notations on the map, recommendations, etc. The campfire area was especially nice since we had some rainy weather but could still build a fire and stay dry under the rock shelf.

Thanks for making it an exceptional home away from home.
