About the property

Cozy Secluded Log Cabin Tucked Under Towering Cliffs Flanked By Massive Boulders

Nestled under the sandstone bluffs that nature carved out of Rocky Hollow, things are quiet, easy going, and perfect for your holiday away from it all. Here lies Big Rock Log Cabin tucked away in the Kentucky mountains yet only minutes away from Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest. After a day of fishing, hiking, or rock climbing, Big Rock is a wonderful place to come home to. Relax on a large covered porch complete with comfortable lounge chairs and table. Come ready to grill out on the porch at the gas grill and eat out under the trees at a picnic table nestled up in Big Rock Hollow. Big Rock Log Cabin beckons you to slow down, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, all in the comfort of a cozy & well furnished log cabin, or lean back in a lounge chair inside Big Rock’s own rock shelter. Big Rock Cabin is fully furnished with new furniture and antiques, creating a cozy, comfortable feeling. All linens, blankets and towels are furnished so all you need to bring are food, drink, and personal items. Central air and heat will keep you comfortable any time of the year. Big Rock Cabin has a bath and a half plus a Jacuzzi. Do you like to cook? We just finished the new galley style kitchen that is fully furnished with refrigerator, electric stove, dish washer, microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and all the utensils you need for cooking, eating, and drinking. Don’t want to cook? During the season Big Rock is only 5 minutes away from great pizza, subs, or a full buffet dinner. That’s the nice thing about Big Rock, it’s close to everything, but when you top the ridge and drive down into Rocky Hollow you are suddenly away from it all. Natural Bridge State Park is only 5 minute drive where you can enjoy hiking trails, swimming pool, fishing lake, or dinner in the resort lodge. Five minutes more and you are in the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest with it’s forest and mountain trails leading to huge natural stone arches and fantastic views of cliff lined valleys. You can even enjoy the trails with your dog in the National Forest. This is a wonderful, undiscovered part of nature where you will see breath taking views without hoards of people. There isn’t a stop light for 20 miles. Come to the Kentucky Mountains and stay at Big Rock Log Cabin. This is a family cabin and not for parties so no spring breakers please.

About John Glover

John Glover: Originally an archaeologist but for many years I have dealt in antiquarian books and historic documents with my bookstore Glover's Bookery. I live in downtown Lexington, KY but am a nut for the great outdoors, thus Big Rock was born [my life saver].

Anne Glover: electrical engineer, started with IBM and continued on with Lexmark.

John Glover purchased this cabin in 2005

Why John Glover chose Kentucky

Big Rock is only a hour from Lexington yet located in the most beautiful deep woods natural area in Kentucky surrounded by cliffy wilderness. I bought Big Rock specifically because it is a Log cabin (a must), was unfinished (so I could finish the inside like I wanted), is under the cliff (my golden retrievers don't know what a cliff edge is), the property has interesting features (massive block boulders, a rock house, and gorilla rock), and lastly is close to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge (Natural Bridge State Park shares a back property line with Big Rock). Fell head over heels for it the moment I saw it.

What makes this cabin unique

New log cabin yet cozy, rustic, and inviting. All wood everywhere, not a drop of paint or sheetrock to be found. Nestled under a 40 foot sandstone cliff with flanked by block boulders the size of a house. Just steps from a huge rock shelter (the rock house) and Gorilla Rock. The cabin is full of unique Folk Art from all over rural American as well as from my travels.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As my husband said, He brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best surprises I ever had. This place is magic. So many thing to appreciate (the cabin, the design, decoration, camp fire outside, every thing clean, cozy, prepared with so much love!..). The natural beauty surrounding the cabin is just surreal. I barely went to sleep. The excitement of being here was great. Now we are leaving I almost feel depressed, I don’t want to go back to reality but also a feeling of joy and hope we will come back soon!

I live in Stanford, KY but I’m originally from Sad Paulo, Brazil and this is one of the most beautiful place I visited, love U all, Thanks for everything

Enchanting

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic location and property. This is the 4th cabin that we have rented and by far the cleanest and my favorite. Such a quiet and peaceful location. If you want solitude then you will find it here. Want something to read or learn more about the area, then check out the book collection, where you will find something for every nature enthusiast. The owner obviously cares about his cabin and decorated it with things that he loves. The artwork from Kentucky artists was exceptional. Did you forget shampoo or a toothbrush, no worries the owner thought of it. Not too mention that we brought our 2 big dogs, who also loved the cabin. I want to come back and would 100% recommend to anyone.

We had a terrific time at Big Rock cabin and would highly recommend it!

  • 5 of 5

We are grandparents who can still hike. We took our 9 and 13 year old grandchildren for three nights. The cabin was perfect. Loved the artwork; even had an art appreciation 20 minutes where each of us picked our favorite and talked about the piece. The kids were especially observant of the works and did a great job on the critiques. Kitchen was well supplied. Hot water was abundant. Outside with nature was a joy and kept our kids busy the whole time we were there. We want to go back!

Great mountain cabin

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is very close to Natural Rock Bridge - a must see for the trip- and the Red River Gorge drive was beautiful. Enjoyed the firepit at the cliff overhang- it was raining, but not on us or the fire. Great way to relax after a day of exploring and climbing. Miguel's Pizza is a must try. There was so much to see and do in the area we used the cabin as a base as we set out each day. Everything you need for home is at the cabin - the kitchen is fully stocked - and we used the charcoal grill, but the cabin also has a gas grill. Only negative is you are unable to turn your vehicle around at the cabin - must either back up the driveway or back out.

Contacted the owner for a quick question and received a prompt answer. Highly recommend this cabin for a vacation. Thanks for sharing your cabin!

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed Big Rock. The rockhouse with a camp fire in the firepit is wonderful anytime but when it is raining or snowing it can't be beat. All the massive rock features like the rockhouse and the secluded forest setting are why I bought Big Rock. I realize it could be an inconvenience for some folks to back out but with the short driveway and a big turn around below on the private drive it just wasn't worth taking out 75 to 100 year old trees to put in a turn around right at the cabin. Hope you will come see us again. John

Lovely cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Secluded & private, Big Rock Log Cabin is conveniently located close to the Gorge with all the amenities of home. Our 2nd time here & was very happy to have been able to book this rental. Next time, will be looking earlier in the year as this cabin books up fast! Especially suited for multiple family members, wish this was available years ago!

This was a beautiful, well kept property! Absolutely peaceful setting and so comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Big Rock! The cabin is very comfortable and well kept. The whole setting was very peaceful, and the cabin had everything you would need! The only draw back for me, was that some of the decor was very disturbing and not in keeping with an otherwise peaceful environment.

Owner's Response: Great to have you and glad you enjoyed the cabin. I too love the peaceful setting at Big Rock with such a contrast between the vast forest and the massive rock formations. Big Rock Log Cabin is decorated with real Southern and Appalachian Folk Art and art I have collected from my travels. I try to choose art from my collection that is not offensive but ya know, the wonderful thing about art by untrained artist is you see a raw expression of feelings, emotions, beliefs, and experiences from which others can interpret in many different ways. The art work you found disturbing is an old tree stump with small clay figures of demons. This was by a famous Kentucky Folk Artist Ronald Cooper. He and his wife were very faithful Christians (as am I) and together their art depicts heaven and hell. Ron called this piece "The Devil is Stumped". Big Rock is my second home, my retreat. When I come here the art gives me so much to think about (in this case I like to think that truly - The Devil "IS" Stumped!) Hope you will come again. John
