Overview

About the property

Farmhouse, 2 Bedrooms + (See Description), 1.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 5)

Half of a large, classic Maine farmhouse that has been lovingly restored and is a short walk from the Meduncook River. The other half of the house is reserved for my wife Lisa and I (no children or pets). You have your own private entrance and parking area and often we are out of town. As you can tell from the reviews if we are in town we will not intrude on your vacation however please email us with any questions or concerns.

The rental space is comprised of approximately 1,500 square feet, with two bedrooms plus a twin bed in an area located off of the master bedroom (perfect for a child who appreciates being close to a parent). The master bedroom is located up a STEEP antique-style stairway with a queen sized bed, a day bed and an en-suite bath. The second bedroom is located on the ground floor and contains a full sized bed (as well as a twin mattress stored under it) and is served by a nearby half bath with the outdoor shower just steps away (an experience not to be missed).

The great room boasts lovely views of spruce forests, the pear tree and the adjacent gravel terrace that has all of the amenities for outdoor cooking and dining or just relaxing in the lounge chairs.

Just off of the great room you will find a charming barn area complete with barn swing overlooking the farm and a ping-pong table and other barn/outdoor games.

The rental also offers a well-stocked kitchen with commercial grade oven and range, spices, gourmet olive oils, cast iron pans, Riedel wine glasses, etc., in addition to a lovely adjacent sitting area.

The property sits on 6 acres of farmland and 3 acres of woods, gardens and natural Mid-coast Maine habitat. It is truly an escape with no nearby neighbors. The space has heat, for the colder seasons, and its own private entrances and gravel parking area with space for several cars. Enjoy a short walk to a pristine salt water estuary which is a perfect location for kayaking, swimming, bird watching, crabbing, boating and fishing as well as many other water activities. Kayak rentals are available just a few miles away Friendship Village. It is the perfect place to relax and recover from a busy life but also offers modern amenities such as wireless internet, cable television with 100+ channels, home phone and a well-stocked kitchen.

Rentals are Saturday to Saturday only (with exceptions in the off season) and we are HAPPY to rent for a month or even for a year however we do not offer an discount for long-term rentals.

Thomaston (15 minutes), Rockland (20 minutes) and Camden/Wiscasset (30 minutes) are easy and scenic drives and Portland is about 90 minutes away. In these towns you will find boutiques, award winning restaurants, harbor front cafes, museums as well as the fleet of antique schooners that ply the waters of Muscongus bay.

Our farmhouse is truly a magical place and not to be missed. We look forward to hosting you.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! All the best, Alan

About Alan Stewart

My wife, Lisa, and I purchased her family's farm house from her brother, David, in the fall of 2013. David and his partner, Paul, had relocated to Sicily and we wanted to ensure that the farmhouse remained in the family. David and Paul spent 13 years renovating the property and truly put their 'heart and soul' into the renovations. We are ecstatic to be carrying on their tradition of lovingly maintaining the property and providing our renters with the most relaxing and unique experience possible.

Alan Stewart purchased this farmhouse in 2013

Why Alan Stewart chose MidCoast and Penobscot Bay

Our farmhouse was built in 1850 by my wife's great-great grandparents. It remained in Lisa's family until 1943 when her great-great grandparents discontinued farming the land and moved to Friendship Village. Lisa and David grew up listening to their grandmother tell stories about her life in Friendship back when the house was a working farm. From childhood they dreamt of bringing the farm back into their family. That dream was realized in 2001 and Lisa and I now carry on the tradition.

What makes this farmhouse unique

There's really no way to adequately describe this farmhouse with words. It needs to be experienced in person. One previous renter described it as 'antique chic' and that seems appropriate. Our goal is that you will "get away from it all" and enjoy life on the farm but still enjoy the comfort , cleanliness and attention to detail of a 5 star hotel. There's something magical about swinging on the barn swing while overlooking the farm or sitting in the backyard gazing at the gardens and wildlife or cooking a farm fresh breakfast with ingredients from the local farm-stands as well as our well-stocked kitchen. Pick your tomatoes, herbs etc from our garden for dinner. Enjoy the farm! Our hope is that you enjoy the property as much as our family does.

The most amazing, wonderful, fun, romantic house on the block

  • 5 of 5

Anyone looking for a relaxing getaway would enjoy this beautiful farmhouse. I feel we were lucky to have met Lisa and her brother David as they provided us with wonderful stories of growing up in not only the house but the town of Friendship.

We are from the western United States and we haven't any fireflies so to be able to enjoy their dance from the barn swing was pure magic.

Some of the places we visited were Camden, Boothbay Harbor. Acadia and some of the surrounding towns. I suggest Camden and the sunset sail it was so romantic. If you choose to visit Acadia you may want to book a night in Bar Harbor in order to see all it has to offer, the drive from friendship is roughly 2.5 hours.

Allen, thank you for sharing your wonderful selection of wine, it was the best tasting wine around.

Lisa, thank you for taking such good care of us and providing the fresh vegetables from your garden and ordering the lobster, it was a first for all of us having live lobster. You have such a worm and caring spirit, thank you for having us.

I hope you have a great trip to Italy!!

Kind Regards,

Candace, Keith, Bret & Kris

Wonderful Family Getaway on the Coast of Maine

  • 5 of 5

I had business in a number of locations in Maine and so we decided Friendship, ME would be a great base of operations with my family in tow. We couldn't have asked for a better coastal farmhouse experience. The house was wonderful and the Stewarts gave us all of the local information and accommodations to make for a great Summer getaway for our family of four. Walks to the water, quaint towns to experience and great food are easily accessible from Friendship, but you still have the peace and quiet you seek when vacationing on the coast of Maine. Our 7 and 9 year old girls loved the property and the house. The kitchen is well appointed and the living room is perfect for family time and relaxation. We will certainly be returning in the future and highly recommend the property and the region.

Perfect escape on the coast

  • 5 of 5

We can't say enough about our experience with this charming little farmhouse. The Stewarts went out of the way to ensure we had everything we needed and more. It really is the little things that count when you are this far away from the rest of civilization. The house came well stocked, not only with food and drink, but with plenty of things to keep the family occupied. Whether it was playing ping-pong in the barn, swinging on the swing, playing Jenga or Yahtzee, building a puzzle, or even watching TV and movies, we had a fun time. The house is also the perfect size for entertaining groups small and large alike. We had a group of 13 family members over for dinner at least 2 nights and it slept the 4 of us very comfortably. We would definitely stay here again if given the opportunity.

Really Lovely!

  • 5 of 5

we had a great time at the Farmhouse. The house was beautiful and tastefully furnished. It was really cozy and fit our party size well. We loved the area. No complaints what so ever. We will definitely be back. And, a super "thank you" to the owners for the well stocked fridge and kitchen. Rarely do we rent a place that has so much to offer.

Owner's Response: We don't often have visitors during the "off season" so it was so wonderful to have such a lovely group over Thanksgiving. We are happy you took advantage of the "giant lobster pot". :) We are so happy you enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you again, Alan and Lisa

If you want PERFECT, then this your place.

This was our second time staying at the FARMHOUSE. We stayed last year as a BABYMOON and this year as a " Help we are not on a BABYMOON." trip :)

Everything was wonderful. The house is a mixture of country and city, and it really is the coziest and warmest place we have ever stayed. from the outdoor shower to the amazing kitchen. SO many pots and pans, wine and beer left in fridge for US. The amazing ping pong location in a barn with a swing overlooking pastures. We walked everyday to the local boat launch, our dog swimming and our 11 month old laughing. I walked to the island at low tied. We sat on the grass in the yard and napped.

Being a jaded New Yorker I can say how lovely this place is. There is a farmstand down the street, Thomaston is 15 minutes away. Rockland 20. We went swimming in a lake in Camden and tried to find every ice cream location within 50 miles.

The House sleeps IMO 4-6 . There is a downstairs room that we slept in with our child and an upstairs master suit with an amazing bathroom and shower that our friend stayed in. The living room is well appointed and looks like something from a NY loft. Cozy couch, gas stove, tv, dvd player, iPod dock. Grill outside. Laundry Machine. WHAT ELSE DO YOU FREAKING WANT? :) I've never stayed in a place that felt so much like home.

TIPS: It's a quiet town and you have to drive about 10-15 minutes to get to Rt 1 but that is the point.. isn't it? The upstairs stairs are a bit steep but no problem for a child if supervision . there are 2 beds upstairs . There are many local shops and wonderful stores. A Walmart for emergencies 20 min away. There is an emergency VET 20 min away that we used when our dog ate an onion. :( You can walk and fish to the bay inlet in 10 minutes. You can jog on the dead end dirt road ...it's 3 miles to the end and back. There is a lovely playground park names " Kevin's park" I think ... near the gas station and general store in CUSHING. a very choice spot with a picnic table and a lovely playground ... perfect for the kids.. If you do have younger kids I would bring a gate as there are 2 stairs up to the kitchen . no problem . we got a $20 dollar one at WALL MART. :)

The owners are so kind and even mailed back a bib and clothes we forgot. They left a few of their wines and beers they make in Massachusetts... so tasty. so kind.

We can't recommend this home enough.

We hope to be back again very soon.

A blissful retreat with everything we need!

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse, everything in it, the surroundings, were all as described and just fabulous. There are so many high points. Where to begin? To have so much space -- what a luxury. The barn swing in a thunderstorm! The Vulcan stove (how can we ever cook on anything else again?) The eclectic decor -- a touch of Italy and Southern France in a historic New England farmhouse. (In honor of that, we had a game of boules on the driveway.) The shower! (I took photos -- that's going in my "next" house!) The ping pong table, (my long-armed husband was able to retrieve a bunch of the ping-pong balls that had all rolled into the same spot under the barn!) Barbecuing on the patio. Walks to the water. Kayaking on the river (thank you Bill Michaud! He rents the kayaks out of the Outsiders Inn in Friendship.) The amazing flocks of wild turkeys. The little farm at the top of the street -- where we got to meet all the animals (goats, sheep, donkey, geese, turkeys, chickens, ducks) each with their own story. A swim off Martin Point. The perseids meteor shower -- thank you skies for clearing on the peak night. Wallace grocery store -- excellent, especially their generous lobster rolls and the French bread brought in from Atlantic Bakery in Rockland. The Olson House. And yes, close enough to other points of interest. We revisited The Farnsworth Museum in Rockland. Thank you for being dog-friendly! I think our dog had the best vacation of any of us, almost!

We can't recommend the farm highly enough. Perfect place, perfect setting!

Friendship is an unspoiled lobstering village just south of the Rockland/ Camden area of the midcoast. The village has one general store (well stocked with groceries, wine, beer, liquor) with a gas station, an antique shop, kayak rentals, a tiny museum, farm stands offering local produce as well as few open artists' studios. On the other side of the Meduncook river is the town of Cushing, made famous by the Wyeth family of painters. The Olson house portrayed in 'Christina's World', now a museum is just a short drive. Fifteen to twenty minutes north is the Rockland, Rockport, Camden area with award-winning restaurants, various museums and the schooner fleet. Rockland is host to numerous summer festivals and is the port for most of the island ferries. Monhegan can be reached by boats in either New Harbor or Port Clyde. Hiking and mountain climbing can be found in the Camden Hills, with pristine lakes and good blueberry picking mid to late summer. In short, the area has much to offer both in scenic beauty and cultural attractions, and locally, the Friendship peninsula is a great place to unwind and enjoy tranquility, local seafood and the fishing/ farming culture.
