Where the beauty is......East Bali

Bedrooms 1
Space 232 m²
Property type villa

About the property

Villa, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 1-5)

Nestled where two fresh-water rivers run into the Lembok Straights of the Indian Ocean, Villa Agung was selected as ARCHITECTURAL DIGEST's lead feature in the 'Exotic Homes Edition' in August 2009 for its unique design, luxurious appointments and magnificent setting. Designed by Linda Garland, built by a team of Sumatran master carpenters, the owners spared no expense in making the home environmentally friendly( built with all re-cycled wood) and seamlessly integrated into the natural setting.

In front lies the ocean and behind towers Bali's main 12,000 foot volcano, Mt. Agung, the 'sacred mother of Bali.' To the north over the terraced rice fields is the Seraya mountain range whose cooling breezes blow in most nights. Thus the property is a 360 degree experience.

The villa is actually six villas organized at the ocean's edge with 2500 square foot long house which serves as the living room/dining room house for the five bedroom villa.

Villa Agung, the master bedroom house, is another 2500 square foot long house with two bathrooms (her's has a bidet), a king-sized bed, living room area, two-person jacuzzi bathtub and both ocean and mountain view decks.

The villa come with the friendly staff of ten people: two cooks, three house caretakers, three gardners and two night security men there all day to meet your every need, including cleaning, and providing a delicious breakfast a day provided in the price of the villas. Lunch and dinner can be arranged for an additional amount. They are all smiles and will climb the many cocoanut trees to give you some 'ayer kalapa muda,' young cocoanut milk, or fresh-sqeezed orange juice, Bintang beer or sodas all day.

There are surf breaks nearby and surf guides can be arranged by the staff and are recommended to insure happy integration into the line-up. The local break, Pura Delam, can generate waves from two-feet to double overhead depending on the season and the swells. You can see the break from the living room/dining room house to tell what the swell is doing. It's a five minute drive away.

There is snorkeling right out front for lobster and sea life observation and excellent diving all over the area including wreck diving in nearby Tabanan. Bali is a haven for all water sports.

Facials and massages can be had at the villas with notices to the staff and are highly recommended and inexpensive. Also, recommended is to hire a car and driver by the week so that your freedom of movement is assured. It is NOT recommended to drive in Bali as the traffic behavior is quite wild and unpredictable. Cars and drivers are also very reasonable in cost and can be arranged before or after you hit the island.

We can arrange the pick up at Denpensar Airport and drive you the 1 1/2 hours to Villa Agung where your smiling staff will greet you warmly and show you to your rooms.

A ten-minute drive away is a often deserted white sand beach (Pasir Putih) about a half-mile long with lovely swimming and a few warungs serving fresh seafood and cold drinks right on the sand. Massages and crafts are also available.

East Bali may be the last refuge of the true Balinese Culture where festivals, temple ceremonies, and rice farming abound as they have done for centuries. Women in sarongs carrying temple offerings on their heads along bamboo-lined back roads are sights that will linger in one's mind long after you are back home. Many villages in the area are craft-oriented specializing in silver jewelry, weaving, ikat, fishing, and baskets, all ready to be explored.

Many local restaurants abound and both the luxurious Alila Hotel and Aman Kila Hotels are located within 45 minutes and have a number of fine, gourmet restaurants should you want a change of dining pace.

Most of all, Villa Agung offers a chance at renewal, re-invigoration, romance, and recreation in uncommon amounts. Though the journey there may be long, upon arriving only the power of the destination will remain as you have successfully traveled into another world.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What to say about our stay in Villa Campuan and more to the point Villa Agung?

We are both well traveled persons and honestly, we have never stayed in a place as unique and beautiful as yours!

Obviously I haven't got a clue what Marlon Brando's private island looked or felt like, but waking up in Villa Agung with the sweeping panorama of mountain and sea all around us surely made me feel like I was there. Just amazing!

Upon arrival I was a little bit scared about sleeping since normally I like my bedroom to be 100% dark, but strangely enough I slept quite well and easily fell into the rythme of going to bed at 21.30-22h and waking up at 6.30.

Different from home, that's for sure Emoji

Ketut and the staff also go a very long way to contributing to the wonderful feeling at Villa Campuan since they are exceptionnaly friendly, always ready to render service and at the same time being unobtrusive so as not to impede on your personal "private island" feeling . Thanks once again to all of them.

Food was also great, be it breakfast , lunch or dinner!

In short, we can only wish to come back ASAP!!!

Complete getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our week with Villa Campuhan was completely perfect in every way - beyond our expectations in design and attention. The villas, the gardens, the longhouse and pools were more than picture perfect! The catering team went above and beyond to look after our varied dietary requests and the smiles were genuine. Thank you villa Campuhan from all three generations of our family. We'll see you again soon.

Truly Magical

  • 5 of 5

Can I add more stars? Villa Agung at Villa Campuhan will go down as one of the most incredible places we've ever seen and stayed at. The remote, rustic, natural beauty of the setting, along with the authentic and luxurious architecture add up to an absolutely idyllic feeling. The owners and designers of this place just knocked it out of the park. I walked around shaking my head in amazement, with a silly grin on my face. The staff was extremely friendly and efficient, while being very respectful of our privacy, and the food is fantastic. It's pretty hard to describe this experience without simply calling it a paradise. We can't wait to go back!

Beautiful & Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Villa Agung May 20-24, 2014. This Villa is amazingly picturesque and peaceful. Sunrises and sunsets from the deck looking into the ocean were breathtakingly beautiful. Waking up to the sounds of the ocean was delightful. This Villa had the most comfortable bed and pillows. The breeze from the ocean coming into Villa Agung made the Balinese heat more tolerable. We love the open concept in the bathroom; we can enjoy a nice relaxing shower while hearing the waves crash and look into the starry sky. The staff is very professional and they go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. We enjoyed our delicious and plentiful Balinese 3 course dinners every night at the Villa. We are a couple in our 30’s and we really enjoyed the quiet and private setting that Villa Campuhan offers. Barbara (owner) and Ketut Redana (Villa manager) accommodated us very well during our stay. It was a very relaxing five days of pure paradise and words couldn’t truly describe this breathtaking experience.

We dreamed a dream of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Villa Campuhan is a truly incredible paradise! My husband and I were the two luckiest people to have this dreamland for two weeks for our honeymoon! I really only thought places like this existed in my dreams! Beyond beautiful(views if both the black sand beach and the volcano). Great food - breakfast, lunch and dinner. The most relaxing massages - anytime you want them. Gorgeous and comfy villas. Balinese artwork - Tons of statues and masks!! Best of all, is that they have the most wonderful people working there!! They took the best care of us and always made sure we had anything we wanted. The manager, Ketut plans any activities you want to do (on any part of the island) and has you set up with the same driver for your entire stay... Even if it's just to go to the white sand beach that's ten minutes south of the villa. By the time we had to leave, we felt like we had become family with them. We can't wait for our next trip here! We already miss our Villa Campuhan family!
