Hospitality and so much more!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a wonderful 2 weeks at Samana. The location is GREAT! Just a few miles from Plaza de Armas and a short walk to just about everything in Cusco. (btw if you are not up for a walk, you can get anywhere by taxi for just a few soles). Betty is the hostess with the mostest. She will set up tours for you if that is what you prefer. She had our trip planned out so that we could do Machu Picchu, as well as seeing all the sites around Cusco. Breakfast was included and was excellent. It was great to try out authentic Peruvian cuisine. The apartment was very spacious, modern and clean. There is nothing that I would have changed about our time there. Thank you for a great experience.

Extremely caring proprietors

  • 5 of 5

My husband, sister-in-law and I (plus other family members) arrived in Cusco after a two week tour of Peru. We were met by Jay's mother, Betty, her sister, Tulla, and Jay's brother, Miguel. All were very helpful in getting us settled. We had arranged with Jay to stay in the apartment on the fourth floor. Because for a couple days we also had our daughter, two grandchildren and a niece, Jay gave us use of the third floor apartment, as well. This worked out wonderfully. Our plan was for three of us (my husband, sister-in-law, and I) to stay on for two months. My husband became very ill from the altitude and found it necessary to return to low altitude by the end of the first week in Cusco. My sister-in-law and I stayed in Cusco for the rest of the month. Miguel and Betty were absolutely wonderful in helping get my husband to the airport and in helping us change flight tickets. We couldn't have hoped for a more supportive effort.

Two weeks after my husband's departure, I had friends who came to spend a few days with us in our apartment. One of them developed what we thought was altitude sickness, but when she became really sick, I contacted Miguel at 4:30am about getting her to the emergency room and it turned out she had an appendicitis. Jay's mother, Betty and her sister, Tulla came to the clinic and translated for us. I believe it was with their help that she was operated on in time to save her life. Again, they all went over and above what you would normally expect from your proprietors. Betty and Tulla visited her on several occasions while she remained in the hospital. There are just not enough "Thanks" that we can give to them.

On the apartment, my sister-in-law and I walked often to the shopping areas in town and never felt threatened. If we were out at night, we would take a taxi back to the apartment. Taxis are easy to find and very inexpensive. We had arranged with Jay to have a space heater in the apartment and I am very happy that we had it. It made a tremendous difference in our comfort. We also had a cooktop (four burner) in our apartment and were able to cook many meals. We had a nice refrigerator and if we were missing something that we needed, like extra pans, Betty would make sure we got them.

Being from Florida, I too suffered a bit from the altitude, so was very happy to return to a lower altitude at the end of the month. We had a great stay with very caring people. Thank You all.

Reviews misrepresent this property to me!

  • 1 of 5

Our family stayed here in 2014 and I have been meaning to write down the experience. It was such a memorable vacation to Peru with this stay one of the worst we have experienced. First, there was never any hot water for showers. The kitchen is rather fake - with a two burner hot plate and one burner broken (which they did have fixed so the hot plate was missing for two days). Pots, pans, silverware, cups, glasses were sparse. Toilet paper? Not one role was full and one with a few sheets - which they would not replace. The owners are not responsible for the neighborhood - but one evening there was an obvious beating on the hill next door, and the following evening an incident of domestic violence right outside the front door. I do think there are family connections to some of the reviewers here - so beware. The photos don't show you the detail.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your opinion and I’m sorry that your stay back in June 2014 did not meet your expectation. It’s been over year and since then I believe we have improved in a lot of areas. First regarding the neighborhood, we are located in a residential neighborhood that is close to the main street in town. We are part of a neighborhood association that meets periodically to address certain issues. Last year the main achievement was the closure of a bar that had opened a few blocks away from the neighborhood that was causing noise as reported by some guests. The association also continually screens and hires watchmen that monitor the neighborhood day and night. I can’t comment on the two incidents described in the review. But I’m sorry that the guest did not feel safe. Those would have been isolated cases, as mentioned before for the neighborhood association safety is the top concern as we have local families with children who live here. Regarding the apartment improvements, we had been experiencing recurring issues with water pressure that was causing our water heaters to malfunction. The water pressure is city-wide problem that may occur during the dry months of May through August. Last year we invested a big portion of our earnings to build a water tank dedicated to our building. I’m happy to report that this solution is working and that we no longer have issues with water pressure or lack of hot water. We also bought new curtains, added more pots, pans, plates and silverware. We also have new convection room heaters for the comfort of our guests. In terms of tours, we pay close attention to our guest feedback and continually review the performance of our operators. Since 2014 we have also made some changes in this area and have received great feedback regarding our new team.

So So bitter cold - do NOT stay in this apartment

  • 1 of 5

I am at a total loss to understand all those excellent reviews of other travelers - I have been traveling with VRBO for over 10 years and stayed at so many locations and I never ever have stayed in a such miss represented apartment - first the good stuff, the father and mother of the owner are very kind and helpful and the airport pick up did work well - but it was all down hill from there, first the building is not in the center but outside in a very poor neighborhood - with drunken people ( text removed ) against the house - terrible smelling and not safe at all - the house has 3 doors to lock and that for a good reason !!

Our main problem was that the apartment has no heating what so ever and I swear my family and I have never ever been so cold for 4 days straight - any time in the apartment we did wear all our clothes and slept with them too - super heavy blankets and sleepless nights - heavy headaches - every day and night - please do not forget you are in 3400 meters high and the nights get very very cold, I have no idea how anyone in his right frame of mind can offer this apartment to international guest with no heating option ??? But this is not all - the apartment was very badly equipped - the kitchen was bare and had a small electric cooker and 2 pots and no other cooking tools, we have never even seen as such empty kitchen, the shower !!! The water was half warm half cold - we did try to turn the gas heater on full but still never managed a hot shower, and when you are in a very cold apartment taking a cold / half cold shower is very hard. But that is not all - Internet was slow and the bathroom wall was coming off - all flaky - but one of the main problems besides the cold was the curtains - they are so thin that the massive street lights are shining through - so no sleeping

either - and worse there is a guy outside that for reasons I can not begin to understand is walking the streets starting at 4 am and hitting an iron with an other - every half hour ?? just outside the windows - every morning - maybe he is walking people to go to work - I do not know - anyway my worse 4 nights in any apartment anywhere and ever - the only reason we did not leave right away was that we had prepaid the place in full - I am sure the owner knows what he is doing it asking guest to prepay in full plus a larger deposit in US$

Owner's Response: We appreciate the feedback and opinion. We try to address any issues as soon as they are reported to us. We also try to gather feedback every day during breakfast and also monitor emails from guests very carefully. Unfortunately in this case we could not do much about the issues because we were not informed. It is really regrettable because we actually do offer heating upon request. We have fanless portable radiator heaters that can effectively provide heat to any room.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent about two weeks in the 4th floor apartment. Jay was very helpful in the lead-up to our trip, providing email advice on dealing with the Lima layover and the abrupt change in altitude. The apartment worked great for us. We wanted a home base from which to explore Cusco and the surrounding countryside. We walked over much of the city and up into the hills to the north. Never once felt threatened. (Taxis are also cheap and abundant.) The kitchen has a nice refrigerator and the basics with which to cook. A pretty conventional Supermercado is a few blocks away. If you want a real experience (and some delicious avocados, among other foodstuffs) visit the Mercado San Pedro early in the day. Yaqui is a gem. She provides a nice breakfast each morning at an agreed-on time and does a great job showing the guests through the local breakfast cuisine. Rut checked in on us at the beginning and about every other day to say hi, answer any questions, and arrange any tours we desired. The apartment is a great place by itself, but Jay, Yaqui, and Rut are what make it special. Highly recommended.

Decent for our family of five

  • 3 of 5

We stayed in the second-floor apartment of this complex. For South American standards, it was average-to-good.

The positives were very positive. For example, Yaqui (the caretaker) was so kind and sweet, and her banana pancakes were really tasty. Breakfast was generous. She was very accommodating about laundry, too. We were able to do our own, though we needed to provide our own laundry soap. (Entirely reasonable, IMO.) We communicated with Yaqui using very rudimentary Spanish. I do not think she speaks English.

The size of the apartment was also perfect for our group. Two rooms, one with two double-beds and one with two singles. The beds were comfortable with plenty of covers. The kitchen was large, there was a second bathroom, and the dining room would have accommodated all five of us had we been eating in.

The price was perfect, a *very* good value for Cusco.

There were some draw-backs for our particular circumstances. While the walk to the historic center is not at all hard or long, it did take us a bit of exploring to find the right path. Also, the area where this apartment is located is not very pretty or clean. Not horrible, but just not as pleasant as the historic center.

The kitchen in the apartment was not super-well-equipped. As a family of five traveling for 11 months, we had planned on cooking most of our meals in the homes/apartments that we are renting along the way. For us, Cusco was a short stop, and we ended up not cooking that much, but if we'd wanted to, this apartment's kitchen would have been a bit of a challenge. Perfectly decent, however, for light-meals and storing left-overs. (Note, there were plenty of plates and cups and utensils, what would have been hard for us was pots/pans and other cooking supplies, plus there is no real stove, just a double "burner" hot plate.)

Finally, we had a bit of a challenge getting in on our first night. We were not able to connect with Yaqui by phone in advance, and there was no buzzer at the door/gate to call up to her. And because the gate is placed far enough away from the door of the building, there was no way to really knock. In fact, I'm not 100% sure how our guide managed to connect with Yaqui, but we eventually did get in. I'd recommend that future renters set an exact time/plan for entry with Jay and/or Yaqui.

All in all, we'd recommend this apartment to other families on a budget in Cusco.
