Guestbook comments from the owner

"We stayed here to celebrate our 20th Anniversary and a birthday. It was amazing! It is very private and we loved the sauna. The house is nearly new and everything is in great condition. The view from the deck is stunning. We enjoyed many meals out on the deck enjoying the view. I especially appreciated the Sonos music system and the fireplace. During our stay we only left twice. Once to the go the beach and a second time to go to the "River's End" for a romantic sunset dinner. The rest of the time we thoroughly enjoyed the home. It's quite a way up in the hills on a graded dirt road, which was a nice scenic drive in our SUV. We even saw a bobcat on the road. Both the master and 2nd bedrooms were large with king beds. Both very nice and quiet. I highly recommend it for a romantic getaway where you want to be away from it all. "

Secluded sanctuary that exceeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5

Casa Cielo is a stunning, well-finished, fully-furnished home nestled amongst the redwoods with breathtaking, all encompassing views and gracious, accommodating owners. This secluded home was the perfect spot to enjoy a weekend getaway with our college age children. Over the years, we have rented many homes up and down the Northern California coast and we all agreed that this spot was by far our favorite. There aren't words enough to do the experience justice. We are so looking forward to returning soon for a longer stay. Thank you John and co. for sharing this wonderful home with us and for your kindness.

A Private Escape Conveniently Close to Town

  • 4 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed for a 4 day weekend to enjoy some time away from the Bay Area. We really appreciated the interiors of the home and found ourselves very comfortable. The rental was not perfect and there were a few disappointments (all covered in other reviews) that we communicated to the owners and their response brought the experience from 3 star to 4. We will stay here again after checking in to see if certain improvements were made.

Wonderful remote getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful large two bedroom home located in hills of private Muniz Ranch just north of Jenner. Lovely peaceful views of the hills and ocean. The house has a great contemporary feel and yet it is decorated to feel inviting and casual. The kitchen is extremely well equipped with state of the art appliances and well stocked to make a night of cooking in enjoyable. The grounds could use a little maintenance but this in no way detracted from our experience! Highly recommend!!

Don't go if you are expecting to use the amenities or outdoor space.

  • 1 of 5

For the record, I use short term rental services all the time and I have never written a review like this before which is why I am so surprised no one else mentioned any of this in recent reviews.

First, make sure you have an SUV or you will ruin the paint on your car on the drive up the steep dirt road. When we arrived, I was immediately shocked by how poor the property had been kept up. It looked nothing like the photos. Many of the bricks on the stairs to the deck were loose due to the over grown weeds so be careful. We almost fell going up and down the steps multiple times. None of the outdoor lights worked nor did any of the pathway lights so bring a flash light. There was debris from the trees all over the deck. I spent the first hour of my arrival cleaning it off. It seriously looked like no one had landscaped the place in a year. The grill was dismantled and full of grease and unsafe to use so don't expect to grill anything. The pool house below was disgusting. Stained rug and hot tub chemicals thrown about everywhere. We were afraid to even use the Sauna given the "warning" sign inside of the pool house. The hot tub itself was also unusable. There was so much chlorine in the hot tub water it burned our eyes and made us cough. Someone left the floating chorine dispenser in there too long so the hot tub was also unusable. Also the hot tub cover was broken.

I am no stranger to the Sonoma Coast weather and terrain but if you want to charge this much for a weekend and boast amenities like this please make sure they function and the conditions are habitable. The only semi-redeeming value of our visit was the interior of the house and the view which we had to enjoy from the inside most of the time. I hate having to write this review but I truly felt ripped off.

Owner's Response: We're very sorry this guest didn't enjoy their stay, and would just like to address several of the issues brought up in this review. -While the entry road is steep, it is well-graded and used consistently by other homeowners and guests in the area without problems. Like any dirt road it’s best to take it very slow to avoid issues, something which we call out clearly in our access instructions for the house. -We feel greasy grill is natural and desirable. The alternative is to scrape it with a wire brush, which can shed very dangerous metallic shards. The grease burns off on the next heating before you actually put anything on it. -The pathway is not brick but a type of compacted earth. There are weeds growing in it, but we hate using Roundup or other weedkillers to control them. This is nature, and we like to keep that way, so we try to weedwhack and pull weeds. There is a separate path behind the house which is cement flagstones where we are aware of several “wiggly” steps. We’re working to have these fixed and have had no trouble with them before. -Similarly, while we try to perform upkeep on the trees and clean the back deck as frequently as possible, the fact of the matter is a strong wind will do more than we can to undo that work. We’re very sorry this guest had to deal with that problem themselves, but please know we do trim them regularly. Also, there’s simply not enough water to keep the grass and flowers lush year round, so this time of the year things start to look brown despite our best efforts to keep everything “kempt”. -As to the outdoor lighting, we previous had solar lights on the path but they were constantly being destroyed, so we have an electrician coming out in August to install a permanent and more robust system. Our apologies there. -We are careful to keep the sauna clean and well maintained, though we do keep the hot tub chemicals on-site. We are also careful to maintain the chemical levels in the hot tub to be a proper balance for the mineral-rich water. The hot tub cover can be heavy and unwieldy but we’re not aware of it actually being “broken,” so this is something else we are looking into as soon as possible. Again, we’re very sorry that this guest was unable to enjoy their stay, and want to let them know that take their concerns very seriously. We have a lot of pride in this house and the property; it’s a very unique and special location, and we want to make sure everyone can enjoy it as much as we do.
