About Helen M Spinelli & Peter D. Taillie

We created a wonderful apartment to share with travelers seeking a comfortable place to rest and have an adventure. Avid runner, cyclist, skier and yoga teacher who enjoys travel, meeting new people and experiencing exciting places. Especially like entertaining friends and family at our home and sharing camp fires and paddling on the Choptank River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. My husband and I have often traveled without knowing exactly where we would end up or stay for the night which has added to our experiences with our sons. Really like our home's rural setting but close to Annapolis, MD Washington D. C. and Baltimore MD and just 4 hours from my hometown of New York City.

Helen M Spinelli & Peter D. Taillie purchased this apartment in 1986

Why Helen M Spinelli & Peter D. Taillie chose Maryland

My husband Peter chose this property and then created Moot Point Farm and custom built our solar envelope house. The Choptank River, a major tributary to the Chesapeake Bay, is fresh water at our upper river location which provides seasonal swimming for the whole family. Additionally, there is outstanding fishing and abundant wildlife watching since there is very little development near our part of the river. The apartment is 20 feet from the stairs to the dock.

What makes this apartment unique

Having been called 'a tree house on the river' by many guests since there is a oneness with nature which is afforded by the design of our home. Only removing the trees necessary for the footprint of the house and having almost three walls of glass gives you a very real sense of being outside when you are in our home. The ever changing view of the river is always enchanting as is the ebb and flow of the tide. Having raised our two sons (now 22 & 23) on the banks of the Choptank in our unique home has been a rare joy and provided a wonderful appreciation of nature in our children.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our rural hideaway provides a great opportunity to experience nature in an intimate way. Almost no development surrounding us and close to two large Maryland State Parks and an hour away from Delaware Atlantic Ocean beaches. Our guests have delighted in sitting on the dock and watching the amazing array of waterfowl float and fly by, fish jumping out of the Choptank River and swimming in the river. The water is fresh therefore no sea nettles (jelly fish) which the rest of the Eastern Shore waterways and the Chesapeake Bay have. The historic towns of Oxford & St. Michael's Maryland are 40 minutes away and Historic Easton is 15 miles south of the farm and provides a movie theatre, many fine restaurants, and the historic Avalon Theater providing live performances with an intimate venue for small shows, the Stoltz Listening room. Lewes Delaware is 45 minutes away and is another favorite destination with an historic town and near the Cape May NJ/Lewes Ferry and Cape Henlopen State Park.

Great place, great stay

  • 5 of 5

The moot point apartment was just perfect for my husband, our active golden retriever, and me. We stayed for 4 nights. It was private, well furnished, and extremely comfortable. A good shower, a great bed, comfortable furniture, and a super kitchen with everything you'd need. And decorated so nicely, we felt so at home. Right outside is a short walk to the dock on the river, where we saw the osprey in the morning, and went for a swim to cool off in the afternoons (including the dog!). Peter and Helen are the ideal hosts; very helpful if you have any questions, but are in no way intrusive. They even provided a couple of "dog towels"! All in all, we felt completely relaxed and contented during our stay. We would definitely stay here again!

A perfect escape

  • 5 of 5

This place was exactly what I was looking for. The apartment was clean, nicely designed, and fully stocked. The access to the Choptank was great! There are multiple kayaks and a canoe to use. We (dogs included) also enjoyed swimming in the river. The location on the eastern shore is also noteworthy. We had an easy hour and twenty minute drive to all the beaches and was then able to escape the craziness of the beach towns. I will definitely book it again.

Beautiful and Quiet Retreat in Denton

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, along with our two beagles and another friend, stayed here in 2015 and again in 2016 for the BikeMS ride in Easton. It's a nice and quiet location, and Helen and Peter couldn't be more accommodating! They even bake the most delicious cookies that are waiting for you upon your arrival! They also took the time to print and laminate information about the area, as well as places to go eat and things to do.

If you are looking for a nice relaxing place to stay, (with the friendliest and most excellent hosts!)I would definitely recommend staying here!!

Peaceful & Quiet Getaway

A very quiet escape from the drumbeat of life; we relaxed completely. Peter & Helen have provided a welcoming space and they, themselves, are the most charming host and hostess. The location was perfect for our activities and we appreciate so much every little detail so carefully planned!

A delightful spot!

  • 5 of 5

The River House Waterfront Apartment is lovely! It's cozy, comfortable, and pretty - with everything you need to settle in and feel at home. Helen and Peter went out of their way to provide extras which would make us feel welcome. It's a perfect spot for a relaxing getaway - great views of the Choptank River from inside the house as well as from the secluded outdoor seating area, which includes a grill and chiminea. We took advantage of the canoe and kayaks to go paddling on the river, and Peter and Helen very kindly helped us get the vessels in and out of the water. It's in a good location, mid-peninsula, with the Bay and the Atlantic both easily accessible. And an easy drive from DC. A great place to stay - would definitely go back!

Choptank: The River I love

Since the first time I saw the Choptank River 30 years ago it has inspired my imagination and interest. In its 70 mile journey from its source near the border between Delaware and Maryland to the Chesapeake Bay is a unique, diverse and fascinating ecosystem. From its source about 30 miles upstream from Moot Point to about 5 miles downstream the river is not brackish or slightly brackish but wholly fresh; farmers irrigate directly from the river less than half a mile north of our dock. Although it is fresh water, it is still subject to the same tides as the bay and the ocean.

River Access:

Interaction with the river where we live is to some extent dependent on the tide. At low tide (once every 12 hours and 25 minutes) there is little or no water at the end of the dock and the small creek, Joiner Branch is clearly visible as it meanders into the river near the dock. At high tide there is 3 feet plus of water at the dock’s end and this is the best time for fishing, swimming and boating. Because the tides are on a lunar clock and most of us run on a solar one, this means high tide shows up at a time about 45 minutes later each day. Depending on when you visit, the tide may be high morning noon or night.

The river is not very clear most of the year but it’s not polluted either. Swimming with a vest or in pairs with supervision is fine. The bottom of the river is predominantly sand covered by mud anywhere the current is slowed by vegetation or small islands. If you are brave enough to wade in the shallow water, be careful, the mud can be many inches deep and will suck the flip-flop or loose shoe right off your feet. Although you may encounter sticks or small tree branches in the mud, otherwise it is not dangerous.

Off the dock at Moot Point the water is between one inch and 3 feet deep depending on the stage of the tide. It continues to be relatively shallow for about 100 feet and then drops off into a 50 foot wide channel at the middle of the river. The current flows in both directions depending on whether the tide is coming in (flood) or going out (ebb). Between tides when it runs the fastest, it flows about 1.5 miles an hour. During severe storms or when the wind is very strong, it can reach considerably faster speeds. This means you should not attempt to swim across the river unless you are an expert swimmer or are wearing a life-vest. If you feel overwhelmed by the current, head for the nearest riverbank and wait until your feet touch bottom.

The river boasts a wide variety of animal, fish and bird life year round. Fish I have seen in the river here include catfish, large-mouth bass, white perch, yellow perch, crappie, alewives, darters, herring, shad, shiners, blue-gill, rock bass and striped bass a.k.a. rockfish. Rockfish are not common except during the Spring when they pursue large schools of baitfish that run up the river and in the Fall when the rockfish are mating.

Although it’s been a long time, I have seen river otters cruise the river at dusk. There are many resident beavers living in the banks of the river but they are mainly nocturnal and hard to spot during the day. You can frequently hear them at night however, as they warn each other of approaching humans by the loud slap of their tails on the water. You will need to use stealth and sneak up on them to experience this behavior. Other animals to look for along or in the river are foxes, gray and black squirrels, raccoons, possum, turtles, moles, voles and deer. Occasionally you will spot a flock of wild turkeys.

People seem to associate the river with reptiles. There are frogs and turtles and eels, (none of them electric), and snakes as well. Please understand there are no poisonous snakes anywhere in or around the entire Delmarva peninsula on which the entire Choptank River watershed is located. This according to Nick Carter, who waded the wetlands and cruised the rivers of the Eastern Shore of Maryland as a wetland biologist for over 30 years.

From Wikipedia:

The Choptank River begins at Choptank Mills, Delaware, where Tidy Island Creek and Culbreth Marsh Ditch join together. It ends at the Chesapeake Bay in a very wide mouth between Blackwalnut Point on Tilghman Island, and Cook Point, near Hudson, Maryland. Tidy Island Creek and Culbreth Marsh Ditch rise in western Kent County, Delaware. The entire watershed is in the coastal plain. The Choptank reaches sea level near Denton, Maryland and is not salty until around 2 miles (3.2 km) below Denton. Greensboro, Maryland, about 6 miles (9.7 km) up the river from Denton, is the head of navigation.

Meaning of the word “Choptank”—“a stream that separates”, or “a place of big current” in the Nanticoke or Delaware (Native American) language
