About Bonnie & Ron Wilkins

This picture is Ron & I at the top of Mt. Baldhead, a high dune in Saugatuck. Yes, we climbed all 282 steps to this deck on the top. Lake Kalamazoo is in the background. Great view. Lake Michigan is just west of Mt. Baldhead.

Ron & I ran Wilkins Hardware Co., a unique hardware store with exceptional customer service, old-fashioned friendliness, and modern convenience and selection in the entire ground floor of the building. We made our home on the second floor, raising our 3 kids. Now we share this wonderful space with you, our guests. Welcome, and enjoy.

Bonnie & Ron Wilkins purchased this apartment in 1985

Very nice

  • 4 of 5

The apartment has high ceilings and lots of light. It's close to everything, and cozy. However There were no towels when I arrived. The owner dropped some off immediately After I called them, which is good. The place was a bit dusty, but the kitchen And tv are nice and big.

Perfect Weekend Get-a-way

  • 5 of 5

Just before arriving we were notified that we'd be upgraded to another unit available in the building. Couldn't have asked for anything more, the loft was everything we could have asked for and enjoyed learning the history of the building.

First time in Saugatuck, people were very friendly. Definatley will be back and looking forward to enjoying it in the summer!!

Delightfully cozy

  • 4 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Tree Top Loft and we couldn't have asked for a better location. We enjoyed a stroll down Butler Street. We prepared a nice breakfast at the apartment, which was very accommodating given the kitchenware. The sights were gorgeous. I am a Michigan native, as is my girlfriend, so we really enjoyed the fact that we didn't have to travel far to escape from the daily routine. Thank you Mr. And Mrs. Wilkins for opening your apartment to us for the weekend. We hope to make a return trip in the future.

A good value and location for the price

  • 4 of 5

The apartment has very nice character and feel to it. It is in a wonderful location, very convenient to downtown Saugatuck. Easy walking distance to the river and shopping. There is also a lovely deck, very private, with a grill, and it's huge. The apartment could use a good cleaning. The stove and refrigerator were grimy, as well as some of the drawers, and the corners of the shower. It just needs a good thorough cleaning. But overall a nice place and we would stay there again.

Location was great, within walking distance to all the shops.

I must say that I was not impressed with everything about this apartment. First you have to enter thru a garage, which is fine except the garage was very messy. You then enter the door and go up to the apartment, however the carpet was quit dirty, even chunks of mud on steps. The apartment itself has a lot of charm and the deck it beautiful, but again did not seem to be very clean, nor updated. The bathroom is in need of a update, very dark, tub/shower looks dirty, even had cleaner left on bottom of shower door. The step into the shower is high and there was not handicap bar to hang on to as you make the step in. The shower head is very discolored and only one stream coming out. Just thought the whole apartment could have been cleaner and brighter and updated.

On a good note, it has charm and did provide the need, but needs to be improved on.

Owner's Response: Ron and I are very sorry that this guest did not have an optimum experience. We strive to satisfy all our guest's expectations. We are surprised that the stairway was judged quite dirty as we just had Randy's Carpet steam clean it just a few days before. The bathroom has a light bar above the sink, a heat/light/fan unit outside the shower and a light above the stool. This is the first suggestion that we've had for a handicap bar in the shower; we will consider the need for this. The showerhead is modern and adjustable. We're sorry that the setting was not suitable for our guest.

For more than 100 years, tourists have sought refuge from the stress of everyday life in the Saugatuck/ Douglas area - a peaceful place where no one rushes and no one rushes you. They can mellow out in surroundings reminiscent of vintage, small-town America, whose hallmarks are scenic beauty and a unique collection of shops, restaurants and art galleries. For those who want to mix relaxation with excitement, the area offers a year-round calendar of fun-filled activities and events. No wonder the National Trust for Historical Preservation designated these towns as one of the nation's Dozen Distinctive Destinations!

The two towns, nestled among towering sand dunes, are bordered by the winding Kalamazoo River on its way to Lake Michigan. Activities abound on the two waterways. Both towns maintain public beaches on Lake Michigan for swimmers and sunbathers. Saugatuck's Oval Beach has been rated by Condé Nast's Traveler Magazine as one of the 25 best shorelines in the world and one of America's 11 great Beachtowns. National Geographic Traveler Magazine agreed, rating it one of the top two freshwater beaches in America. More recently, the Chicago Tribune ranked it number one out of the Midwest's five best beaches and Life Magazine judged it Best Dune Town.

In addition to finding unique clothing and accessories for your self and for gifts, and seeing a kaleidoscopic of artwork in the galleries, we love to hike the dunes in Saugatuck Dunes State Park and Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area. We also enjoy touring the winery, farms and studios in next door harvest country. Kids enjoy sifting in the sand searching for stones & shells, including lucky stones. If you want to brew your own beer or enjoy exceptional craft beers, check out the Lucky Stone Tavern within Saugatuck Brewing Co.
