Welcome to our sunny one bedroom plus den, located near the infamous Gowanus canal. Only steps away from the trendy Smith Street, the F train is 3 blocks away and a 20 minute subway ride to midtown Manhattan. The apartment is on the parlor floor, with high ceilings, only one step! Perfect for 2 - 4 persons. Comfortable Queen bed and 2 singles. Enjoy the shared back yard, the Brooklyn way which means getting there down the fire escape ladder a few feet. The apartment is clean and uncluttered perfect for your stay.
For another larger rental option in the neighborhood, and the heart of Carroll Gardens
Caroline Lee Skaife purchased this apartment in 1999
It's the best neighborhood. A beautiful walk to the subway, restaurants, Carroll Park, locally owned shops and speciality food stores.
We spent 2 nights in this apartment. It was great for two people. It was clean and functional. The location was very good for us.
I would recommend this Brooklyn apartment (indeed, I have!) without hesitation. The bed was without a doubt one of the most comfortable I've slept on, and the lofty ceilings and clean lines made for a welcome return at the end of the day. The amenities were exactly as depicted in the listing, and the transaction and check-in instructions were simple. Two subway lines into Manhattan are a quick walk away, making it really easy to get to meetings downtown. Friendly bar staff at the Brooklyn Social bar on Spring St. just around the corner -- a former Italian social club maintaining an authentic look and feel. Great for a late-night panini.
I wish I could have stayed longer than two nights. And next time, I'd bring my son -- the two single beds in the adjoining room make the place perfect for families.
Spent Four Nights. Easily accessible as there is a lock box to obtain the key,
Lovely Old Brownstone in very residential neighborhood,on 1st floor, but also convenient to transportation.
As all Brownstone rentals, could use some updating.
Owner very friendly. Lives upstairs.
Wold return for next visit.
This is pretty much the VRBO standard for the daily booking price. The entire transaction/transition was seamless, and you can't beat the area if you plan on staying more in Brooklyn than Manhattan. As someone who is used to living in apartment/condo buildings (incl. NYC, Queens, etc.), the ceilings/walls are thinner than most I've experienced. I could easily make out words from the upstairs resident, and the bedroom is on the other side of the wall from the building access door, which is very noisy at times. If you look on the other side of the bedroom wall you can easily see why. The outside wall joints have been kept exposed where most buildings/homes insulate, and sheet-rock to buffer noise and temperature. It does look artsy, but at a noisy cost to the person on the other side of the wall. And speaking of loud, there is a beautiful cathedral a block away, and its bells are NOISY. On Sunday mornings it seems to play nonstop from 8am to 11am -- you've been warned.
As one review stated, the bathroom needs a bit of TLC, but everything was sanitized and clean.
I was disappointed with the Wi-Fi situation. I had to do a lot of work during the work week, but it seems the Wi-Fi hardware is housed somewhere upstairs, which you piggyback from below. At times, my connection was slow or dropped altogether, which was frustrating. This may not be a big deal to you, but important to note. (I don't know what really could've been done about this in a timely matter, so I didn't report it.)
I have no complaints about the kitchen, but don't expect a full service one. It's more than sufficient, and besides you should go explore the neighborhood rather than coop up in the apartment and trying to whip up a meal for your whole family. I am familiar with the 'hood, so I would recommend: Prime Meats (brunch), Pig Beach (around the corner - outdoor BBQ/Beer garden), Battersby (finer dining), French Louie on Atlantic, Clover Club (drinks), Bar Bruno (Mexican fare), Blue Bottle (coffee), Lavender Lake Bar.
Overall -- I probably would not book this place again due to my sensitivity to noise and the lackluster WI-FI situation unless I needed to stay specifically in that area. But if you are on a budget and need to stay in that area then I would definitely recommend it. I'd say this is more a 3.5 out of 5 Stars, but I am unable to select that rating option above.
This brownstone looks just like the photos. It was clean and conviently located to subway and Smith St with the shops, cafes and services we needed. Our host was friendly and available, which I really like.
It would have been handy to have a binder with local info, attractions etc. I suggest that because it has been very handy at other places we have stayed.
The brownsrone was very quiet at night, which was a bonus. I am glad I took my eye cover! I need it dark to sleep and the window coverings in the bedroom did not block out all the light. The beds were very comfortable!!
Overall I would say this is a comfy place to stay with the basics provided.
