About Helen Charton

We bought the Cottage in 2006 and a year later it burned. I had to start over with the cottage. Petit Jean Mtn. is a wonderful place and we feel blessed to get to share it with others.

Helen Charton purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why Helen Charton chose Arkansas

The Charton family has been farmers all our lives. Barnyard Friends and Stables is just a added plus to our farm. We use the barn as a teaching tool, we have children summer horse camps, riding horses and enjoy the fact that animals are good for the soul. .

What makes this farmhouse unique

Our home is in the middle of all these animals and you will be waking to a rooster crowing in the morning and the sounds of the animals throughout the day. When staying with us you are always welcome to come to the barn to be with us or feed the animals. The horses back riding is $18.00 for a 30 minute ride and $27.00 for an hour ride.

Great week!

  • 4 of 5

We were here from July 14 thru July 18, 2016. We really enjoyed all the animals on the farm, especially the beautiful horses and the dogs. Everything was clean and comfortable. There was plenty of room for the five of us. Helen was a very gracious host and always made sure we had everything we needed. Will recommend it to others, especially with small children. (The petting zoo was really fun.)

Fantastic Weekend

  • 5 of 5

This was a great experience. Exactly as described. Helen is a wonderful, warm, caring and gracious host. The horses out back are beautiful. We spent most mornings out back watching them. Close to everything you want to be near at Petit Jean State Park, but secluded enough for privacy from the crowds. Will definitely visit Helen again...soon!

A Unique Stay with a Great Location

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a great time staying here. Helen was wonderful, she was helpful and accommodating. The house is behind a petting zoo, it was so much fun to wake up and watch the horses, goats, and other animals. There are 3 bedrooms along with sleeper couches, so even though we were only 4 people there is room for many more. We did also bring our dogs and they had a great time. Quick access to Petit Jean State Park. Definitely recommend.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a weekend over there in July 2014 with my little 3 year old daughter and other family, the place was really well kept up and very comfortable, it has 3 bedrooms with very comfortable beds and the leaving room had a sofa bed, it had all the kitchen utencils a nice backyard and having the petting zoo so close was wonderful for the kids, we want to comeback soon!

An amazing adventure

  • 5 of 5

We weren't sure exactly what to expect staying on a farm with a petting zoo. From the start Helen was helpful and answered all my questions. She called the night we were arriving to let me know the lights were on and she'd see us in the morning. Once we all arrived we were amazed with the house (much bigger than we expected) and the overall location. What a fun trip! All the kids had a blast exploring and seeing all the animals plus the beautiful scenery. Not to mention my youngest son and Helen's grandson really hit it off! We want to go back again next year for sure.

Matter Lodge, In Petit Jean State Park

The Cottage is part of Barnyard Friends and Stables. Barnyard Friends is a petting zoo and riding stables. Folks come with family and friends to pet animals and ride horses. While at the barn you are welcome to help feed the animals and let your children play in our play yard.

If riding horses is your thing we have two rides. First is a 30 min. ride which is $18.00 and the second ride a 50 min. ride is 27.00. We will put you on a list and make this a great day .

Petit Jean State Park is a mile down the road and has a host of things to do. The over look views of the Arkansas River and the site of our Arkansas beauty is at great abundances. At Matter Lodge is just a great place to dine. Then there is just miles of trails to hike. Lake Bailey is full of fish to catch and you in the summer you can rent a boat to get on the lake to catch the big ones.

The best hikes are to the water fall and to rock house cave. At different times of the year we have the Car Shows and active in the park.
