About the property

A 2 double bed and 1 bath 1,250 square foot property in leafy Ballsbridge.

Once occupied by Patrick Kavanagh, the renowned Irish poet and novelist, this Mews is quietly set back from the former bustling literary quarter of Baggot Rath.

The Mews was once a stable for its early Victorian house on Pembroke Road, and it remains in structure largely as it did in the mid 20th century.

Its recent and contemporary interior design plays gently on its late 19th century pedigree whilst also giving its 1950's provenance room to breathe.

It is bright and fresh and has an authentic feel with almost a nod of approval from the author of its past.

Residents and guests who stay here...describe the house as a comfortable mews with 2 separate private enclosed outdoor spaces...an entrance courtyard gravelled with seating...and back patio, gravelled space and herb garden... outdoor seating (for 8) and dining furniture provides for the opportunity to eat outdoors...a fully equipped kitchen allows the enthusiastic cook to prepare great meals from the foods from the local Donnybrook Fair combined with the garden's herbs... or if you prefer you can simply use the extensive availability of local high quality takeaways... including the weekly Grand Canal Bank market...nearby. The kitchen includes an oven, hob, microwave...a fridge and separate freezer (essential for those of us who love ice!) , a dishwasher and plenty of storage. There's dinner plates, sides, bowls, mugs and cutlery for 8 people along with rolling pin, weighing scales, measuring jugs, saucepans, serving bowls, utensils...you name it ...even down to some great cookery books from Alice Waters...all the stuff you need in the kitchen of a home away from home. The kitchen combines with a living/dining space so your never lonely when cooking. This space has an open and real fire where local turf lifts the aroma to the authenticity of the Mews' past. The fire breast is wrapped in an 1873 reproduction Suffolk House wall paper of birds and butterflies. Its silvers and greens and pinks are picked up as colours for the design motif of the full space and other parts of the Mews giving it its airy bright feel balanced with the earthy feel and tones of wooden floors and local craft and walnut furniture.

Just beneath the stairs leading up to 2 bedrooms is a swivel chair and desk space for the worker in you who wants to punch away on a keyboard. The desk holds the most recent and interesting guides to Dublin ...from literary and historical trails to what's new on the food and coffee scene.

A separate chill out TV room downstairs has a plasma TV with HD cable TV that also acts as a hub for high speed broadband WIFI available throughout the house. This room has a comfortable modular couch system which easily converts to three single beds (additional linen available on request) extending the number of residents/guests that the mews can accommodate. With the two double bedrooms upstairs (one kingsize double bed and one regular double bed) alongside the three single bed conversions from the couch the Mews can in fact accommodate up to 7 people is required. This chill out room as an adjoining toilet facility and the prospect of an open door onto the private entrance courtyard.

Across the hall from these living spaces is another separate toilet facility with full laundry equipment including a washing machine and separate dryer...there's an ironing board and iron available too ... in case you need to iron something.

On your way upstairs there's an extensive library of books ... an eclectic mix of local history, literature, food and wildlife ...extending to and including a biography of Patrick Kavanagh - the famous poet who lived here. there's also a montage of pictures of Kavanagh from throughout his life framed and on the wall.

Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom. The first bedroom is the master (affectionately known as the Owl's room) with a kingsize double bed and views from the window of leafy trees, the garden and the rear of the Victorian house that the Mews was once the stable to. The second bedroom is nicknamed the butterfly room and has a double bed and the same rear view. both bedrooms have adequate wardrobe space ... integrated in drawers and cupboard style to meet all your storage needs. For the longer term stayer there is an attic off the landing upstairs for storage of suitcases if necessary.

The bathroom has a bath come shower and a full power shower, a wc and basin and a storage cabinet.

It's an all round comfortable and cosy space, so set back from the bustle that you'll enjoy silence and hear the birds sing while just beyond the doorstep you'll access some of the finest amenities Dublin has to offer.

I'm a Dubliner who loves beautiful places, spaces, music, history, art and food. I adore local places with long histories and like to get to know them. My desert island foods would be crumbly blue cheese on an oat biscuit, butter and whiskey wrapped fresh lobster and cork dry gin with slices of homegrown cucumber and ice. I cant live without good coffee and wouldn't even try. I'm currently reading Swallows and Amazons with my kids and I love it for its sense of freedom and escape. My favourite musicians are plenty - Queen, Van Morrisson, The Mumfords, Daft Punk. I believe in keeping life simple - and I fundamentally believe - the simpler, the better.

Why Una Harnett chose Dublin

This place is authentic, real and alive in its history for me because my hero poet Patrick Kavanagh once lived here ...and when he did the surroundings inspired him to write his most incredible work. In September 1959 Kavanagh took up home at this Mews...at a time during which he committed to an acceptance of life as it is.

He said that 'in the final simplicity...we are satisfied with being ourselves.'

During this period he wrote many poems expressing inner tranquility, several of them sonnets, and they were praised in reviews.

As an example of this change in his writing Kavanagh quoted his sonnet 'Canal Bank Walk' in his self portrait: 'Leafy-with-love banks and the green waters of the canal / Pouring redemption for me, that I do .../ Grow with nature again as before I grew.

''... I like the clarity and the emotiveness of Patrick Kavanagh... I like how he combines the kind of mystic into really clear, evocative work that can make you glad you are alive.' this is how the actor Russel Crowe explains his perspective on the work of Patrick Kavanagh.

Obama also quoted Kavanagh on March 14th last in a speech.

His words and the place that inspired his words at that particular juncture in his life is what inspires me very day to live life simply ...for the better.

What I enjoy also is the privilege of owning Kavanagh's Mews and the opportunity it has given me to meet people who want to share this space for the very same reason.

What makes this lodge unique

Kavanagh's Mews' exterior cut limestone and granite door case, gravel under foot outdoor spaces, treelined aspect with nesting and singing birds and the authentic footprint of the house kept in tact since the time Patrick Kavanagh lived there in the 1950's is what attracted me to this haven in the first place. The back garden captures and traps heat when the sun comes out...because it's so well sheltered. there is no noise - it's tranquil and free ... and yet if you want to participate in the bustle you just need to walk out the door. It's understandable how Kavanagh was attracted to the space as a writer and its surrounding greenery - of trees, parks, canal walks and so on are an oasis in any Capital city.

Comfortable home away from home in Dublin

We had a great stay at the Mews House in Dublin. Una was away so we were greeted by her father Barry. We arrived early in the day and he very graciously met us then so we could leave our bags and make the most of our day. He offered us advice on tourist activities and texted us in the middle of our stay to see if we needed anything. The house is bright and cheerful and the bedrooms are very comfortable! The neighborhood is very nice and is within about a 15 minute walk of most attractions. I highly recommend staying here when in Dublin.

Central Quiet Location

Very good central spot in Ballsbridge. You able to walk into city. Enjoyable stay. Thought parking would be a challenge but was able to park directly outside the mews everyday (don't necessarily count on that). Comfortable, clean house. Owner Una was helpful in meeting us.

A great base for a Dublin visit

Spacious and comfortable, this apartment proved to be an ideal base for several days in Dublin. The property was extremely well prepared, clean, and stocked with all of the necessities. Una had taken special note of our interests, and had made that extra effort that can make a visit more memorable.

The bedrooms are upstairs and spacious, with plenty of cupboard space. The beds are comfortable. The bathrooms (more than adequate for three people) were clean and the water pressure is good.

Downstairs, there is a roomy living room, plus (surprisingly) a separate sitting room with lots of seating. The kitchen is big, well stocked, and has all the equipment you will probably look for. The laundry has an excellent washing machine and dryer.

Una had previously told us that there was no parking, and technically this was the case. However, there was street space immediately outside in the lane. Our car stayed there for the duration, with no problems and no cost.

The property is a fairly solid walk from the centre of Dublin, but certainly do-able for most people. You really don't need a car. The centre of Ballsbridge is not far away, and there are good coffee places and a couple of eateries there too. The neighbourhood is actually the embassy quarter, and is leafy, pleasant, and seems quite safe.

We would definitely stay again on a return trip to the amazing city of Dublin.

Wonderful Stay

We stayed at the Mews for a week while visiting Dublin. The owner was so accommodating and wonderful to deal with. We arrived early and they were able to accommodate us by getting us in early as we had flown over night and been up for 24 HRS. It is very centrally located and we were able to walk most everywhere we wanted to go to in the city. Grocery, pubs, shops and the beach all within walking distance, most of it in less then .5 miles. The home was exactly what we expected from the pictures and very clean, tidy and well accommodating. We will definitely stay here again on our return.

Beautiful comfy flat, great quiet location

Una is incredibly nice and helpful, lives nearby and very forthcoming with advice and guidance. The flat was perfect for family of four; our son slept in the TV room, private with its own bathroom. Everything is tasteful and comfortable, great kitchen, lighting, lovely small back patio. Location-wise, good shops, restaurants and pubs are an easy walk away. Center city (Trinity & St Stephen's Green) is a 20 minute walk, DART station is a 10 minute walk. Baggot Lane is very quiet. Thank you, Una. A perfect stay in a great city!

Clean, relaxing back yard in central location

All six of us enjoyed the property. We could walk to the heart of Dublin and still be in the nice area of Pembroke. The back yard made you feel like you were not in the city when you felt you had to get away from it for awhile. There was a little confusion with the reservation, but, Una made sure the problem got solved.

This is a two storey recently refurbished comfortable and relaxing mews house just new to Homeaway. The mews was a coach house for a large victorian house on Pembroke Road in the 1800’s.

It's a special charming house, which was once home to Ireland’s famous poet - Patrick Kavanagh. Kavanagh composed the poem Raglan Road which was adopted in song by Van Morrison among many other musicians and singers.

The Mews is on Baggot Lane, in Ballsbridge which is Ireland’s leafy embassy belt set among Georgian and Victorian Dublin.

This mews house is one the few which has some of its original coach house features from its first occupants in tact. It is also one of the few buildings of historical and literary interest available for short term stays in Dublin.

The Mews has been decorated to take account of its victorian past and its mid 20th century occupancy by Patrick Kavanagh, in style, furnishings and design while keeping it fresh and modern.

Just on the doorstep are the banks of the Royal Canal, Herbert Park or Merrion and Fitzwilliam Squares... all of which are an oasis of calm and still greenness in the city centre which inspired the writing of Kavanagh and which are easy to access if you stay here. If you like rugby the Aviva stadium is a some minutes walk away which hosts the international nations and provincial rugby and has a series of concerts also. The RDS showgrounds nearby is famous for its annual horse show. Also within walking distance is Trinity College where you can view the Book of Kells. The National Library where you can view the national archives of writing and photographs is also very close by as is the Genealogy Office for checking out Irish ancestry. There's lots to do like taking a picnic in the local parks or on the banks of the canal, playing tennis in Herbert Park or joining a local course. Why not take a food or literary trail, visit the local Bord Gais and Gaiety Theatres or catch a lunchtime concert in the National Concert Hall. You can travel further walking, cycling or a few stops on the DART train to Sandymount Strand, Dunlaoire Harbour and Howth - catch some sailing, surfing or kayaking...ther's plenty of choice.
