About Sharon Lewis

We, my husband, daughter and myself, have been coming to the Lucca area since 1994. I am half Italian, my husband loves Italy, and our daughter leads small tours to the Lucca area. We all live in the Pacific Northwest, but love the time we spend in Italy.

Sharon Lewis purchased this villa in 2014

Why Sharon Lewis chose Lucca

My grandmothers parents came from Ponte a Moriano at the bottom of the hill. My grandfather came from Quiesa, a village near Massarossa, outside of Lucca. In 2010 we bough Casa Lucy, a small cottage, with 250 olive trees. We started exporting olive oil to the United States in 2012. After we bought Lucy we discovered that Campitino was up the road and for sale. As fate would have it, I had seen Campitino on the internet in 2009 and fell in love with it. This year we had the opportunity to purchase Campitino from the Brannen family who had the vision to restore and build this amazing compound. We were able to add 375 olive trees to our farm. We also farm 250 olive trees for a neighbor.

What makes this villa unique

This is a beautiful area, where you can be at the sea, in Pisa, or Florence in less than an hour, Or just hike the property and enjoy the beauty of the area.

The houses are comfortable for family or groups. The terraces and pool offer spectacular views of villages, churches, mountains, valleys, and the Serchio river. Leonida, the upper house is 400 years old, we named it for my Grandmother, who was born in California and never came to Italy. Luca, the terrace house, is named for my great-grandfather who lived in Massarosa, use to be a storage place for wine and the lemons in winter, now it is a stunning home with views from every window. You can walk for pizza or pasta in the evenings or have dinner on the terrace. Arrangements can be made if you are there in November, to join in the olive harvest.

I always love staying at Leonida, this trip was perfect in every way. The villa is amazing and roaming Tuscany by day and enjoying nights at the villa hiring private chefs and learning how to cook in the traditional Tuscan method is a highlight! There is so much to see and do, I can't wait until our next visit in 2018!!!

What an amazing villa! We have travelled the world and stayed many places over the years and this is one of our favorite places we have ever stayed! The two villas were beautiful, with plenty of room for all (we were a group of five couples). The bedrooms were very comfortable and all had their own bathrooms and amazing views. Both kitchens were well stocked with anything you might need. There was a lovely welcome basket of food and wine when we arrived. We spent many hours sitting on the beautiful terrace, overlooking the Brancoli hills and valley below, drinking Italian wine. Ivano, pizza chef extraordinaire, cooked pizzas for us our first night. This was so much fun and a great way to start our stay. We finally stopped him at 30 pizzas! The pizzeria in the village is also very good and has amazing views. We had a couple of wonderful chefs cook for us on two different nights. Aurelio and Morena were both great and their food was delicious and such a treat. Thank you Linda for setting up the chefs for us. Thank you Bob and Sharon for sharing your little piece of paradise with us and for all the recommendations! We really had a trip of a lifetime!

Beautiful View and Plenty of space to relax

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Leonida! We visited in early April which is a little on the early side of the season and as such got to enjoy both rainy cloudy days and bright sunshine filled days. Both were wonderful as we got to enjoy a wood fire in the living room on the rainy day and enjoyed sunbathing on the patio in the sun. The large bedroom has a fantastic view of the lights of Lucca down the hill. And we spent time roaming the olive trees of the property, even enjoying some freshly picked olives! We elected to have a pizza night in one night as the hosts can arrange for chefs to come to the property. I would highly recommend it! It is one of my favorite nights of the trip. The food was delicious. The house had everything we needed (including laundry), was clean and even had sweet little flowers in vases on the bedrooms. Very charming. The drive up the hill was a bit steep the first time for me (I'm from a very flat USA city) but our little rental car handled it with ease and I got very comfortable with it after that first treck up. Overall very happy with our stay and think you would love it too!

Wonderful villa

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 10 that stayed in the villa for a week. After finally finding the driveway, we had the perfect stay. The villa is true to the pictures. The view is spectacular! Jacqueline is wonderful to use as a conceirer. She arranged our chefs and tours. Please use her to make your vacation stress free! The management company was very responsive and arranged for groceries to be there upon our arrival. The owners were also very responsive and available for any question. I would definitely stay again if in the area and would highly recommend this property.

Amazing Spot

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful time we had at Leonida for our first trip to Italy. The location was perfect and the property is amazing. We loved our little piece of heaven on earth. As it was record temperatures while we were there, we spent a lot of time in the pool and relaxing in the shade of the verandas. We had quick trips to Cinque Terre, Lucca, Florence, Venice, San Gimignano and Sienna but always looked forward to returning to our Italy "home". So very beautiful and quiet there. Most days we had a morning hike to Croce de Brancolli followed by a dip in the pool. So many special memories of our trip to Leonida. Thank you to Sharon, Linda and Ivano for all your efforts here.

The Best Villa Experience

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay at Leonida in four years. That's how much we love staying in these two excellent stone houses. The restoration is a perfect blend of modern and ancient - the beds are great, well-appointed bathrooms, and lovely terra cotta floors. The roomy kitchens allow for mass cooking events, and each house is organized so that conversation can flow easily from living room to stove top. And while families and friends alike can hang out together and cook and eat, the grounds are designed so anyone can wander off individually to read a book or swim in the pool and feel totally comfortable doing their own thing for a while. And the two verandas, two patios and a tiered sun deck by the pool make it really easy for kids and adults to be within earshot without having competing conversations. The olive orchard is full of birds and wildlife. Getting up early had the reward of seeing roe deer eating apricots from the tree below the spacious veranda and the local gang of cinghale, the chestnut munching wild boar of the Italian forest, wrestling each other over fallen figs. We are cyclists, and the Lucca/Garfagnana Valley area provides some of the best riding around - Abetone, Fornovolasco and Vergemoli, Monte Serra, Passo delle Radici, Pescaglia - with several routes challenging enough to star in past Giro d'Italia and the 2013 UCI World Road Championships. And the food is terrific. For us, it is all about the ingredients (though the local restaurants are tempting) so we hit the local markets in the morning, snipped fruits and vegetables from the house gardens and made our own lunch and dinner. Eating outside beneath the wisteria covered porch overlooking the orchard below, the surrounding valley of Brancoli, and Lucca twinkling in the distance each night makes food taste better. What a view! What a house! Plus great cycling and great food - what more could you need? Pizza? Just request a visit from the house pizzaiolo. Ivano arrives with baskets of ingredients and homemade dough to fire up the wood-fired pizza oven and serve one great tasting pizza after another. His best pizza uses fresh figs from the garden and melted gorgonzola - nothing like it to top off a day of climbing to Abetone by bike. Love this place. Didn't want to go home. We'll be back!

Leonida is located on a working Olive and fruit tree orchard, that is also home to an organic orto (garden) planted with herbs and vegetables. We are 20 minutes to Lucca a beautiful walled city with great shops, beautiful churches and wonderful opportunities to walk or bike around the wall. There are tours to wineries and historic villas, or the Gothic line that can be arranged. Visit the wineries in Montecarlo, or Matria. Closer to home you can hike the Roman roads that fan out behind the house, or learn more about the olive oil we produce from our trees. Day trips to Florence, Pisa, the marble quarries of Carrara, Cinque Terre, Voltera, or Bulgheri are easy drives from the house.
