About Diane Barcelo, owner

I am a sculptor and my husband is a playwright. We are active members of New London's vibrant art community.

Diane Barcelo, owner purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Diane Barcelo, owner chose Connecticut Shore

I used to come to Ocean Beach every summer as a kid so when I moved to the area for a teaching position, was lucky to find this spot. This was my first home. I fell in love with it when I first stepped inside and I love it still. My husband and I recently moved to a larger home nearby. We love New London for the vibrant arts community, the water and the ideal location- an easy ride to NYC, Boston and Providence.

What makes this cottage unique

The best part of living here is the porch and next best thing is the beach. I walk all over the area most mornings. The boardwalk and the neighborhoods are interesting and close to the water, The Eugene O'Neill Theatre is right close by as is Harkness Park, Avery Point and the Mystic Seaport and Aquarium. We live by the sea in a small town but can go into town so easily to have a meal, shop or visit friends.

Great place, a great time and hot, hot weather

  • 5 of 5

Diane is an excellent host, we arrived late after a long hot drive from Baltimore and she greeted us with a 6-pack of local beer - what a star! After showing us around and mentioning a few New London places of interest (culinary and scenic) she left us but made sure we had her full contact details and ensured us she was available if we needed her.

The property is as described, a cottage with wrap around porch, and with mostly sanded and polished floorboards throughout. There is carpet in the main bedroom for that cosy touch. The house was spacious enough for our family of 5, two parents and 3 grown-up children. The cottage is entirely suitable for full self-catering including use of the gas barbecue on the porch as well as the fully equipped kitchen. During our stay we did a mix of eating-in and eating out at local places as recommended by Diane.

The property is only minutes away from Ocean Beach Park which has a fabulous sugar-sand beach, boardwalk and olympic-sized swimming pool with waterslide. Small children are well catered for with an amusement park and rides.

The local area is great. We took a long walk along Pequot Avenue gawping at the magnificent properties and the spectacular views across the bay, especially at dusk and early evening. We also enjoyed a boat ride around the many famous local lighthouses - recommended.

We were sorry to leave but sadly after any holiday real life beckons you back home and we had a plane to catch back to the UK. Would we stay again? In New London - yes. In Diane's cottage, definitely yes.

Owner's Response: So glad you had such a nice stay! You did catch the beginning of a grueling hot spell and we installed 2 air conditioners for comfortable sleeping in that heat. Thanks for taking such good care of our house. We hope to see you again. Diane

A bit of a disappointment

  • 2 of 5

Unfortunately our stay at this house in New London was a bit of a disappointment.

While Diane was a great host and very helpful in answering all of our questions in advance of our trip, as well as meeting us at the property to make sure we had everything we needed, the quality of the house itself was well below our expectations.

As a previous guest has pointed out, the house would benefit from a thorough clean and redecoration. Whilst bed linens and towels were clean, the floors throughout the house did not appear to have been mopped or properly vacuumed in a while and the kitchen in particular needed a thorough scrubbing. The surfaces in the kitchen and throughout the house were dusty and sticky and most of the doors and walls are scuffed and marked with handprints. In addition, most of the furniture needs a thorough update with a lot of the pieces stained with water rings from glasses and mugs. The paintwork is peeling throughout and the paintwork that has been redone is patchy and, in places (e.g. the master bedroom door), half completed. In addition, the automatic ignition on the gas stove no longer worked so we had to go out and get matches to light it and we avoided using the oven for that reason.

New London itself is OK, and being close to Ocean Beach is a plus, but as guests from the UK, we would recommend going further up the coast, perhaps to Mistic, where there is more life and more for kids to do.

Owner's Response: Sorry you were so disappointed. Actually only one burner has a pilot that does not work properly. And I left matches in the drawer next to the stove. Thanks for the feedback. The offending walls have been painted and wood surfaces are being sanded or painted. The entire house is cleaned top to bottom every time a guest leaves. I am particularly fastidious in the kitchen. But I will just be even more attentive so as not to miss anything. This is a simple beach cottage, as described. There are plenty of family activities at this public beach and we are about 4 miles from downtown and a short driving distance to several historic locations with different kinds of activities. The beach area is residential, not commercial. So activities close by are beach concessions, mini-golf, water slide, walking, biking, swimming and the like. You can see more at Ocean Beach Park website to better plan your trip. Mystic is only 20 minutes away, has a quaint, active downtown, but has no beach.

Sweet Summer Stay

  • 5 of 5

This “cozy beach cottage” was exactly as described and in a great location with plenty to see and do. The original works on the walls provided a pleasant bonus for this art lover. The owners were kind and accommodating. We would definitely stay here again.

Airy cottage very close to the boardwalk& beach

  • 4 of 5

Cottage was roomy enough for four adults and two kids, porch was spacious and nice to drink coffee in the morning or have dinner on. Owner provides beach chairs and umbrella which is very convenient for those with kids who already have to bring tons of stuff, it was nice to not have to worry about that. Beach is walkable, but with young children and all the stuff that we needed, we drove over. Owner was very accomadating, drove over to personally install air conditioners because at 8 months pregnant I was not handling the heat well. The beach was wonderful during the week, the weekend was a bit crowded for my taste. But there was a lot to do there which kept my kids very happy. The house itself faces a busy street, and with beach traffic it became quite loud at times, no fault of the owner, but definitely not what we were used to living in farmland. But we spent most of the day on the beach anyway. Overall a great little place to stay for a great price. Owner was very responsive and very nice as well.

Good Times

  • 3 of 5

We are a family of 3. This was our first time renting a cottage for vacation. We had a really good experience. The owner was very very nice and extremely helpful. The house itself was good. A cottage in every sense. We had all the comforts of home minus air conditioning. We had the hottest week in CT, it was a little difficult sleeping etc.

One bit of constructive feedback would be the quality of floors. Realizing this is a house on the beach I expect to have some sand/dirt etc. However, by the end of our first day, I made all of us keep something on our feet at all times as they would be BLACK in no time if walking around barefoot, and that was troubling after showering etc. I had to buy baby wipes to keep with us in each room. The home was pretty dusty, and had cob webs in corners and on some of the popcorn ceilings. Again, I am not expecting a four star hotel, but I would expect that surface dust would be cleaned up before each stay. This would be our only negative feedback, as the rest of our stay was pretty awesome. The location is fantastic, the house had a lovely front porch that wrapped around part of the house, outside lounging at night was very relaxing. Ocean Beach Park was a great experience for our little 6 yr old. The beach is within walking distance, and we were fortunate not to have to pay admission as the cottage came with the use of beach passes at no additional charge. Again, the owner was very pleasant and just asked of us to strip the sheets off the bed and do some sweeping up before we left on our last day. Other than that we just went about our day to day lives enjoying our CT staycation.

Notes:
Our cottage home is located at the entrance to a busy public beach. The front porch looks out towards the cove and the neighborhood, the back deck towards the yards and beach. There are many summer activities to keep you busy such as fireworks, arcade, mini-golf, rides, live music and entertainment, children's shows on the boardwalk and movies on the beach. Sports activities, play or watch beach volleyball, or go jogging, walking or biking in the area. Quiet morning or sunset strolls along the boardwalk and out to the nature path and garden provide a welcome retreat where you may look across the peaceful marsh to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre grounds. We see many seabirds feasting there at low tide. Children love to hunt for small sea life in the cove and marsh. The O'Neill Theatre has a summer theatre festival, just a short drive to their campus. For a nice walk, you can continue on to Harkness State Park.
