Cottage was great. A little snug for 4 people. Everything was as advertised.

  • 4 of 5

Hilmar was great meeting us and providing us with fantastic directions to cottage and to pick up keys from him. He provided us with a in country phone in case we had questions which was great. Cottage is centrally located in the Golden Cirlce and we were able to see all of the sites in 3 full driving days. If you are interested in the City of Reykjavik it's a long drive (1.5 hrs) to the city. We loved how quiet and remote the cottage is. Would definitely rent again if we return to Iceland.

Comfortable cabin, great views, close to attractions

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable, modern cabin with fantastic views from its big windows -- a flat-top mountain in front and the glacier peeking through the trees at the back. There is wi-fi and all the amenities. It is located in the middle of a gated complex of similar cabins, but they are so sparse you don't see them from the windows. Kids have space to run around in the moss and bushes. The place is about 1.5-hour drive from the Keflavik airport, conveniently in the direction of the main natural attractions. The owner is extremely helpful -- he met us half-way from the a/p to give us the keys, and helpfully showed the way to the one supermarket that was open on that day (Friday before Easter).

General info: rent an SUV if possible -- during our week in late April, we encounterd a couple of sudden heavy snowfalls during night drives, as well as really strong crosswind (we saw some trailers overturned on the roadside -- and some waterfalls falling toward the sky). If you are like us and planning to drive around and return home late, the chain of Olis gas stations is your friend -- their food/convenience stores are open 24/7. Even if a gas station is closed at night, the pumps would still operate if you have a card with a PIN. Beware that Google maps doesn't have a good coverage of Iceland (Here maps is better). And, don't forget to come out at night and check the sky -- one night we were lucky to see the northern lights all across the sky.

Great location, lovely cottage!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter and I just returned from our trip from Iceland. Prior to our trip I had several emails to Hilmar asking questions about car rentals, the area, etc and he always answered each question which was a big help. Hilmar was to meet us at 5am at the airport but our flight was delayed 6 hours. I emailed him from the airport to let him know, and when we arrived 6 hours behind Hilmar was there waiting for us. He gave us a phone to use during our stay, which ended up being a life saver because we had car problems 1 hour away from the house. Thank God we had that cell phone!

The cottage was very clean, and had everything we needed. Selfoss is not far from the cottage for things you may need. Our trip was made when we saw the Northern Lights right from the deck of the cottage on two separate nights. The lights were right on top of us. It was so amazing!!

We really enjoyed our stay here at Hilmar's cottage and would definately recommend!!

Excellent cottage and very helpful owner

  • 5 of 5

My family of 4 stayed for a week in Hilmar's nice cottage in December 2014. Prior to our trip, Hilmar responded swiftly to my queries, provided very good travel tips, and even help me negotiate with a car rental company for better prices as he knew this was my first trip to Iceland. Hilmar met us at the airport where I drove following his car to the cottage. On the way, as he knew we would be ravenous after our flight as well as an expected bad weather the next day, he stopped by a supermarket where he waited for us patiently while we picked up some groceries for the next few days. Upon arrival at the cottage, we were amazed with the how well kept cottage was. Northern Lights were also beginning to show when we arrived. In fact, we were fortunate to view Northern Lights from this cottage almost every night. Hilmar provided us with a mobile phone as well to make calls to him. This was helpful because we called Hilmar and obtained good advices to maximize our stay in Iceland, when deep snowfall paralyzed and closed off Reykavik for two separate days during our stay. Location of cottage provided easy access to Golden Circle sights including Kerio. We shopped for groceries in Selfoss, a 15-20 min drive from the cottage. Cottage was warm and cozy, while high winds bellow outside the cottage with temperatures between 0 to -9 degrees Celsius. Hilmar also handed us a shovel in case our 4x4 rented vehicle required, which came in handy. We also catered for a guided Blue Ice Cave tour during our stay, which turned out to be a highlight of our tour in Iceland. Upon our day of departure, due to the unprecedented deep snowfall in Iceland in mid December 2014, Hilmar and his friend, Ingolf, drove a truck to pick us with luggage from the cottage to our 4x4 car. This helped us avoid being stranded in deep snow as an inexperienced deep snow driver. And to further avoid us losing our way to the airport in the dark (few day light hours in winter), Hilmar and his friend had us followed their truck to show us almost all the way to the airport. Truly Icelandic Hospitality! My family was very fortunate to meet sincere people like Hilmar and his friend. I highly recommend this cottage. Thank you so much, Hilmar!

fantastic location, great house, great owner

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for one week in this property in late Oct 2014. The cottage was very clean and neat and plenty warm. It was large enough for my wife and I and our 4 kids ages 8-15 and it was centrally located so we were easily able to see the sites we wanted to see. On two of our nights we watched the northern lights from the deck of the cottage. It was completely dark so it was a very good location from which to see them.

The cottage larder was well stocked and we did not need to buy some of the basic spices and coffee or tea. We had everything we needed in tems of cookware and appliances.

Hilmar met us in Reykjavik and he was nice enough to escort us to the cabin to make sure we were well settled in . He really took care of us! I would not hessitate to recommend this cabin to a friend and would stay there again if I get a chance to return to Iceland.

A very good place to stay with

  • 5 of 5

Many thanks to Hilmar, the owner of the cottage, for providing such a nice clean place for us to stay. His customer service is perfect, I remembered he gave me a big hand when my suitcases got lost in the airport. He has also provided us a good free-wifi service in the cottage, so that we could contact our friends and families overseas. If you need any advices or guidance on travelling in Iceland, he can give you some good suggestions.

The layout of the cottage is elegant and welcoming, it gave me a feeling of home and warmth at the first sight when I arrived. The property is well-maintained with all the things you needed, a well-decorated kitchen, sitting room with a huge soft sofa and 3 bedrooms with heaters. The beds are very comfy and clean which refilled my energy after a tiring journey. Last but not least, a well-functioning washing machine is essential for travelers ! I am grateful that we could wash our clothes efficiently after riding and hiking.

Nevertheless, the location of the cottage was one of the reason which attracted me to choose this cottage while I was planning my journey, because it locates nearby to the town(30 minuutes driving) and national park(10 minutes driving) , so it is very convenient for us to travel around and I got to see the aurora every night before I went to sleep, this is the best place to stay.

After the experience of staying in the cottage, I will definitely recommend this to others.
