It's a 14-year old 3-bedroom log house, nestled among the evergreens, oaks, Harbor Seals, and Bald Eagles. Situated right on Taunton Bay. Nearly all the comforts of home here -- fridge, LP gas oven, microwave, piano, kayak, canoe, DVD/CD, fireplace, linens, W/D, and more stuff...not the least of which will be peace and quiet. About 45 min. from BHB/Acadia, 30 min. from Schoodic, and 3 hrs. from Baxter St. Park (and all the Moose). Hancock has three wonderful restaurants, incredible as that sounds. Ellsworth, the closest "town", has everything you'll need, and it's a not-too-close 8 miles away. What else can I tell you? Look at the photos and you'll see what awaits you. You'll have near total privacy, although you should be aware that I work in the cabin on the property from time to time. Also, pets are encouraged, not just permitted. Note: if you rent during the winter/early spring months, you WILL need a 4WD vehicle. Check-in time is 4:00-pm, check-out time is 10:30-am. Okay. Look forward to hearing from you. Peace, Gerry.
PS - Trump supporters should look for lodging elsewhere. I'm serious about this.
Hi. My name's Gerry Monteux. This is where I grew up and I can't say enough good things about it, but the first thing I'll mention is that it's the reason I do what I do now for a living. I'm a nature photographer and being here, being immersed in nature 24/7, convinced me to do what I do. This place tends to get in your blood and remain there. I need to let you know that if you stay here, I'll be working in the little cabin on the property. But don't freak out. You'll have tons of privacy, and might not even know I'm there. And should anything go wrong, I'm right there to take care of it.
Gerard "Gerry" Monteux purchased this chateau / country house in 2005
I built this house on the property where I grew up. It's my cathedral.
Away from 'most of it', peace and quiet, nature in abundance, Bar Harbor, Schoodic, Acadia all nearby, Plenty of restaurants and bars within reasonable driving distance, pets encouraged to come!
What could be better than a white Christmas in a warm cozy log cabin? The place was picture perfect and we took plenty of pics. The cabin was adorable and the view was awesome! Can't wait to go back!
We wanted a comfortable cabin feeling near the water and this was all that with plenty of creature comforts. It is rare that a property is able to blend an authentic rustic feeling with a clean/up to date ambience. This one does! The location is a hoot to arrive at...definitely off the beaten path without being inconvenient. The beautiful wildlife photography on the walls is the work of the very accomplished owner. There is other local culture and history associated with the property and that authentic Downeast connection shines through. Highly recommended and we would love to return.
As soon as we arrived it felt like home. Having access to the water was really great and to be so close to local attractions while still having that rustic and remote vibe was just what we were looking for. Gerry was very accommodating, the place was clean, and the weather was really perfect. Being able to have a fire in the fireplace was nice, and we used the deck to look at stars at night. We rode bikes and kayaks provided at the house. Can't wait to visit again sometime!
We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. The home was not only beautiful, but the surroundings were so peaceful that we never wanted to leave. Our host was amazing- one of the nicest people I have met. The house easily accommodates 6 people and Gerry truely loves dogs. The wrap around porch is huge and there is plenty of outdoor seating availabile. We had a great time kayaking in the bay, eating at the wonderful restaurants nearby and hiking on the Schoodic Penninsula as well as nearby Acadia National Park. A truely wonderful week!
We just returned and simply loved the property. It was close enough to MDI to fit in a full day of hiking/touring of Acadia, but far enough away to not be in the heart of the hustle and bustle. We spent plenty of time out exploring the bay on the kayaks, as well as simply sitting and enjoying the view and silence. The home itself has everything you need (and more!) to cook and feel right at home, and was clean and well kept.
This house was perfect for our family vacation (we have 2 grown children in their mid 20's) on the coast of Maine. After 3 nights in Boston, we wanted a place to stay near Acadia so we could visit the park, but also not be in the thick of the summer crowds, and this fit the bill. It is spacious and functional, with a lot of rustic charm. Its location on a cove of Taunton Bay was wonderful for kayaking, canoeing (provided by owner) and fishing and swimming. We spent our mornings there, then headed over to Acadia for biking, hiking and sightseeing and did not have any problems with traffic going or returning. There are restaurants in Hancock (when we didn't eat on the Island) and groceries and supplies available in Ellsworth. We had some meals at the house, including 2 dinners using the charcoal grill. Gerry was very helpful and friendly, allowing us to use pretty much whatever was in the house, including the wood burning fireplace. One more thing worth mentioning: fog is a common occurrence in the summer on the Maine coast, but there was less at the house's location in Hancock, compared to Mount Desert Island itself. (We had just one day of fog, the rest were beautiful.) We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to friends!
