Overview

About the property

Vintage 3 Bedroom, 1 & 1/2 Bath House Across Street From White Sandy Gulf Beach

This vintage beach house, nestled in the dunes of Cabana Beach Estates, offers guests the relative seclusion of a private beach community. When you first take the winding gravel road through the neighborhood you’ll feel as though you have stepped back to your childhood before beach living went condo. Most houses in the neighborhood are older and only a few rent to visitors. The community has a dedicated beachfront access for the homes that are not located directly on the Gulf beach. A short walk two houses down and across the street make for quick and easy access to the water and back home again. Pull the large-wheeled wagon loaded with your towels and toys from under the house to the beach in just a few minutes.

If you enjoy fishing you can go across Ft Morgan Road to Cabana Beach Estate's dedicated bay front area. Here you will find a dock where you can sit and enjoy unobstructed views of the bay's incredible sunsets. Fishermen will love this side of the peninsula. Toss in a crab trap, fishing line or use your cast net to gather dinner. It is truly the best of both worlds, bay and beach.

This 1000 sq. ft. home was built in the 1970s and is across the street from the Gulf of Mexico. You will enjoy the vintage feel of a home that has not gone condo. You will appreciate lazy days at the beach where the view and the sound of the surf are the most important things.

Even though it is raised on pilings its steps are an easy climb. Upstairs you will find an open central living room with TV and DVD player and comfy seating for six. The home also has Wi-Fi for those who want to keep up with the world while on vacation.

On the west side you will find one queen and one full bedroom with adjoining half bath. On the east side is a smaller room with three twin beds, a newly remodeled full bath and kitchen with beautiful new cabinets and granite countertops.

Built before air conditioners were commonplace (don't worry, it has central heat and air now!) the home is designed to catch the cross breeze. You can open up the windows and enjoy the fresh air blowing through the rooms. You’ll love to relax on the screened front porch and enjoy the natural vegetation of the front yard and a fantastic view of the Gulf of Mexico. Sunrise and sunset have never been so beautiful!

Downstairs is a full laundry and an outdoor shower with both hot and cold water. It is great for cleaning up the sandiness of a day on the beach before going upstairs. Hang your towels and suits on the clothesline to dry. Under the house is parking for two cars or it can be a great place for kids to play outside in the shade when they've had enough sun. Owners keep a wagon of beach toys for others to use at the beach.

If you want to get out and enjoy the sights or eat out you will find both an excellent fine dining restaurant and a less formal eatery at The Beach Club Resort located adjacent to the neighborhood. On holiday weekends, you have an unequaled view of the resort's fireworks displays. A few more miles down Fort Morgan Road are the Sassy Bass and Tacky Jacks; both have full bars and good food. Just east of the neighborhood is The Pines. Its convenience store, gas pumps, pizza place and restaurant mean you may never have to venture far to find the items you need.

Historic Fort Morgan is only a fifteen minute drive. The historic fort and museum are great fun for kids and an educational outing. The Fort has reenactments every Tuesday evening and other special events. The summer of 2014 marks their 150th anniversary so this summer will feature even more excitement at the fort.

Another great local day excursion is a ferry ride to Dauphin Island. Catch the ferry at the end of Fort Morgan Road (about a 15 minute drive) and spend 45 minutes crossing the mouth of Mobile Bay to the island. While there, visit Fort Gaines, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium, a showcase of the plants, animals, and other natural resources found in the Estuary and its surrounding marine habitats. To make a day of it go on up to a favorite place, Bellingrath Gardens and Homes on the mainland. If you want to make the full circle, travel on up to Mobile and enjoy that historic city and the WWII battleship USS Alabama before returning to the Gulf Shores area.

When you pull yourself away from the beach house try a trip in the opposite direction and go 20 minutes into Gulf Shores. Here you find all the usual beachy stuff from souvenir shops to restaurants, adventure golf, grocery stores, sea kayak rentals and waterparks. Explore the whole island and visit Orange Beach, the Gulf State Park, the Hangout, Lulu's, or even take a quick trip over the line into Florida.

For nature lovers the Bon Secour National Wildlife Preserve is only five minutes away. They have several hiking trails and guided walking tours. Bird watching is a favorite pastime of visitors to the area as well. Pick up the local Mullet Wrapper or Islander newspapers for schedules of local events and activities.

Nice modest property with oceanview from screened porch with sun deck on either side for sunning.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Potts Spot with great ocean views from screened porch. All rooms adequate and comfortable. TV with Dish network, wifi and dvds. Washer/dryer a huge plus! Love, love, loved the screened porch and the short walk to the beaches. Great sunsets and quiet area with quiet beaches. Neighbors pleasant as well! Outdoor shower handy for after beach walks and doggy feet too!

Needs Work

  • 1 of 5

Excellent location, with beach access right across street. But.... the cottage needs work. The potpourri lasted only a couple of days, then a musty smell permeates the entire home, unless all the windows are open. The pictures on VRBO look OK, but simply "lipstick on a pig".

Very disappointed, will NEVER stay again.

Lovely cottage for family and pets

  • 4 of 5

This is a nice little place to enjoy the beach. We took our Basset Hound and he was right at home. The kitchen is WELL equipped with anything you would need for cooking. The screened in front porch is a nice perk. Things we did not know before we arrived:

1) We had access to a new dock on the Mobile Bay for fishing. You had to drive directly across the road, but the directions were laid out in a notebook on the counter. We bought fishing license online and bought bait at the store just at the entrance of the community.

2) We did have a view of the gulf and the boardwalk to enter the beach was just across the road. I did not realize it was so close. You could hear the waves crashing!

3) The utility room had a nice little supply of beach toys and chairs.

We liked it so much we booked another trip in July.

Loved Potts Spot.

Peaceful, easy, and beautiful beach get-away

  • 5 of 5

Had a great stay @ Pott's Spot. Wonderful location on a beautiful, quiet spot on the beach. Beach is very easy to access, just a short walk away. Pott's Spot was very homey and relaxing. Clearly "a home away from home".

Nice, beautiful view

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful view. House is older and is beginning to show its age. Numerous small items (i.e. blinds that don't work, screens ripped/damaged) noted to need attention. Martha had lights on along with air upon arrival which was appreciated since we didn't know the area. Overall stay was good.

Owner's Response: Hope you enjoyed your stay at the beach and thanks for your comments. Come again! The screens on the porch get blown out every winter and we repair them every spring before the bugs come. In fact, all of the screens were replaced last spring. That is why you find very few screened in porches at the beach. It's a lot of trouble but we think the benefits are worth the effort. The blinds were already scheduled for replacement this spring. We schedule maintenance and repairs in the spring, in a practical sense, after the ravages of winter.

Comfortable, old school, dog friendly

  • 3 of 5

We had a nice family weekend at this cottage, and especially loved being able to bring along our dog to enjoy this dog friendly beach. The agent Martha was so nice to deal with. The house was comfortable, in a quiet neighborhood right across a small dirt road from the beach. There are big crowds just down the beach from the *massive* condos right next door, but this cottage is in a traditional "beach cottage" style development with a residents-only beach, so even on a holiday long weekend it was not crowded. The beach has beautiful 'powder sugar' sand and even though it is dog friendly it is perfectly clean.

The house is basic and seemed a bit overpriced, I suppose because it is pet friendly and there are not many to choose from. But the kitchen appliances especially need replacing and the internet upgraded. But it was clean, the furniture in good repair, the beds were comfortable, and we were glad to have ceiling fans in all the rooms so we could open the windows and listen to the waves at night.

One thing to know about this area--there were swarms of biting flies on the beach the first day, which is apparently common all across the northern gulf coast at this time of year when the wind blows from the N. Thankfully, the wind blew strongly from the E on the second day and blew them all away. (We heard from a local that they are worse closer to the bird sanctuary, where we had been sitting, so stay closer to the W entrance if they are biting). There also was some itchy nettles in the ocean that first day that get stuck in your bathing suit, but again, they were gone on the second day. So if you come in Oct-Nov, come armed with Deep Woods Off just in case. There were 3 sea turtle nests on this beach alone, so we had fun talking with the local conservation staff who come at night with their equipment to listen for hatching sounds. It would be great to be there when the little ones come out!

Also, as other reviewers have noted, this house is pretty "out there" so bring your own fun (and your own groceries-- the Sassy Bass market and liquor store is open 7 days and has the basics, but not much more). Our tween got a bit stir crazy the day the day the beach had flies and nettles --the internet is painfully slow so you cant stream movies or play video games-- but there is a big go-kart track and game arcade in Gulf Shores about 40 min drive.

For quiet, dog friendly vacation we would stay again

Owner's Response: We are really glad that you enjoyed you visit to Pompano Beach and we hope that you can come again. Sorry about the slow internet. We have been frustrated by it for years but there is nothing more that we can do. There are no upgrades available. The latest external Wi-Fi that we installed earlier this year made a big improvement. Our screened porch, the only one at Pompano Beach, does help with the bug problem. Appliances deteriorate very rapidly in the salt water atmosphere and we do replace them based on appearance rather than functionality. Bill Potts
