Lovely cottage in a remarkable location, but..

The Romar Cottages complex is beautiful, well constructed and energy efficient; located in a convenient location to shopping and dining and an easy walk to the beach. Coastal Cottage appears to have been a model home for the community and is near the front gate facing Perdido Boulevard. It has lavish landscaping and is beautifully decorated, nicely equipped with quality appliances and comfortable living room furniture. Surprisingly the cleaning staff is pretty inadequate and there were several maintenance items that needed tended to. Most noticeable was the fact that the landscape was grown up with weeds and wasn't being watered or properly cared for; it looked a mess. The complex has sprinkler systems throughout, but many of them had broken heads and were inoperable. The beds were hard as a rock. I'm used to a firm mattress and prefer that, but this was all together something else. The AC quit working on the second day and we called Kaiser Real Estate, who promptly called technician and followed up a couple times to be sure they showed. The technician was very friendly and appeared to be very skilled in his trade. He got it working that afternoon and returned a few days later to replace the coil with a new one. The cottage has no unit number on it, so we had trouble finding it when we arrived after dark; the technician and the airline baggage delivery all went to the wrong houses. The registration and check-out process was very efficient, mostly done by text messaging and mobile phone app. Little things like there being no hair dryer, broken hooks in the bathroom, mold on shower curtains and bathroom tiles, dirty dishes in the cabinet, etc. were disappointing. We own vacation rentals and understand that some people can't be satisfied no matter what. Our expectations are very realistic and I understand how hard it is to keep up with these places, but my sense is that management doesn't pay close attention and the cleaning crews are mostly unskilled laborers who aren't being supervised. This is a beautiful property and its very unfortunate that Windham/Kaiser doesn't do more to ensure it is properly maintained. Given these concerns, I think it was a little over priced for the area.

Nice pool...

The property was furnished nicely and appeared clean. However, we had a problem with roaches and the house had to be sprayed during our stay. No wifi for 4 days. And there is no view of the beach/coastline as advertised. You do have a view of the pool.

The community is lovely ...beautiful pool and nearby Boardwalk to white sand and clear water beach !

Coastal Cottage was a disappointment. We have had wonderful 25 years experience of beach rental homes. This rental was tired and worn , poorly equipped kitchen, no wifi for week as owner didn't feel it necessary to provide as he was changing providers , (no warning when checking in on Saturday. We were given a night's refund, but made it known we would rather have the modem replaced . There were three chairs for dining in a house for six , grim on white newel post, stained towels, and needed PIN number for tv which was never provided. Even on vacation , unfortunately , people need to stay in touch with office and work. Every morning meant a several mile drive to Starbucks for wifi and sometimes a return in afternoon. Please save yourself grief on vacation and look at other homes. The community is lovely and enjoyable .....

Our overall view of cottage

  • 3 of 5

The property looks excellent in pictures , however there are a few things that need improvement ! Mildew in both baths , dirty sofa including gum on it ! Huge grease spots on the wooden eating table ! Outdated small appliances in kitchen including coffee maker . Very bare kitchen utensils not enough silverware for the two of us. Nasty living room rug as well as very dirty bath mats in baths . We used a clean sheet over the sofa . There were dog hairs on the coffee table and to think we paid a cleaning fee . I have pictures of it all . With fees and taxes it adds up to quite a sum. The cleaning service came over and tried to clean the mildew .
