Ximena is a chilean lawyer who lived in Costa Rica for almost 30 years and still lives partially there. She fell in love with Matapalo in the year 1993 and bought her first property then. Osa Marmaris was built between 2008 and 2009. She fulfilled her dream of building the most elegant and luxurious house in the area, without compromising its eco-friendly standards.
Ximena Soler purchased this house in 2009
This property is magnificently located right next to Backwash Bay without loosing its privacy. Even though it is ocean front, it has a 15 meter rise which makes the view breathtaking from every room you are in.
In Osa Marmaris you will have 3 private bungalows, each one with it´s private bathroom and shower. They are all separate from the social area that includes the living room, dinning room, kitchen and extra bedroom. This way you can choose if you want to hang out with your friends and family in the social area or if you want some privacy and quiet in your own room.
The house was incredible, Ximena, we are still talking about it with our friends here in Nosara. You designed it so perfectly!! My husband's favorite place was right in the master bed as he could see if Backwash was breaking without moving a muscle! I absolutely love the living area and the comfortable furniture to just sit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, OR the master bathroom, love the shower and how we could watch the Capuchin monkeys jumping from tree to tree some 30 feet!
I can promise you we will be back.
We had a group of 5 people that spent 10 days at Casa Marmaris--most went for the surfing. The house is located at Backwash Bay -- which at the time we went was the best break! Tides are extreme--and Backwash breaks at mid to low tide (although we weren't there when it was big)! The house and grounds are fantastic--the views incredible! And the sound of the jungle make things interesting! Ximena was great to deal with for booking her house! Desiree and her husband Isaac were the caretakers of the house and were extremely helpful! We had Desiree cook for us every night---her choice of typical Costa Rican cuisine--and it was great every night! When others have said you should buy what you want to eat in Puerto Jiminez--they were right--it's a 20-30 minute drive back to Puerto Jiminez on some rocky roads! We paid Desirre to go to Puerto Jiminez and buy food and beer and wine for the 10 days we were there!! Best move we made!! Also would have to say a trip to the Lookout Inn towards Carate--is a worthwhile trip!! Plan on eating lunch there if you go--outstanding and reasonably priced--about a 45 minute drive! Keep in mind this is a remote location--no electricity--the main house is open--although all rooms have screens! I took plenty of bug spray and never used it and never was bit--I'm sure it has to do with the time of year. Internet works well! Also the howlers, geckos , raccoons and the macaws are ever entertaining! Want a tropical jungle experience whether you surf or not--great place!
I don't even know where to begin....the location was perfect (especially if you are looking for a quiet place, with a spectacular view and loads of animal "visitors"). It was a short walk, to a pretty much empty beach, and a short walk to 2 superb waterfalls which the caretakers, Isaac and Desiree, brought us to (although definitely bring your runners/hiking shoes!).
The house was wonderful for 3 couples and now seeing it, I wouldn't hesitate to invite a fourth couple...the 4th bedroom is in the main lodge but can be totally private by closing some screens and has it's own ensuite bathroom.
The kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils and pots/pans etc. We cooked most of our meals but had Isaac arrange fresh fish deliveries. Desiree cooked one of our last meals there...and if we had known what a fantastic cook she was we would have had her prepare a few more! We also went to Martina's (sp?) Bar for lunch several days (it was awesome!). We did the Encanta la Vida Lodge (which is a 10 minute walk from the house) for dinner one night and it was awesome too! We never had a bad meal...Costa Rican food is sooooo good.
We rented a car...definitely take pictures of your rental car before and DEFINITELY get 4 wheel drive (and as high a clearance as possible!!) The roads are an adventure in themselves! Ximena gave us some great advice and tips before our trip so we were very prepared with everything we would need in the relatively remote location. Although the neighbouring house was much closer than it seemed in the pictures, it had no impact whatsoever on our enjoyment of the property!
Our stay at Casa Marmaris was wonderful....I can't wait to go back!
Where do I even start to express my love for this home? From the moment I inquired about this property to the moment we had our tearful goodbyes... our experience was nothing but perfect. Ximena was very helpful and accommodating to ALL my questions about the home, the area, the rental car possibilities, the taxi service, surfboard questions, beach questions and even birthday cake service on the day of checkin. The home, the area, the beach near the home were unbelievably beautiful. This was our second trip to the Osa and this home was the EPITOME of what one hopes for when wanting to stay in Costa Rica..... you have the primary jungle, the eco-living, you have wildlife galore, there are amazing beaches at your doorstep, you have fresh foods, there is peace and serenity all around you. We opted for the meal plan which I highly recommend! Not only because the closest grocery store is the BM and 30-35 mins away (depending on your unpaved jungle 4wd road driving skills) but for the fact Desiree's cooking is unparalleled! Her fresh Costa Rican cuisinee was delicious. Our family fell in love with the caretakers, Desiree and Issac (hence our tearful goodbyes!) Desiree was more than accommodating, creative, funny and Issac was helpful in our daily activity planning and was even our guide on a hike to the local waterfall. We had the most amazing massages by our casita by Sienne. She was Desiree's cooking assistant and has to be the best masseuse in Puerto Jimenez for sure! We will return to Casa Marmaris undoubtedly. I hope that if you are looking for a place in the Osa you will consider this home. The location is the best, the staff is THE BEST, Ximena was incredibly wonderful. I can't say enough about how happy we (family of 6) were here I can only assure you that we will return. Until our return Casa Marmaris we will sing your praises!!!
The entire Peach Family!
We spent..so wonderful vacation..so nice place..full of really exciting views...enjoy so much..sounds...of birds...sea...service at the house..was very good..they cook..for us...we enjoy..and the place is so peaceful...so full of all...5 star..holiday...we will return ...for sure...with friends..to show them..this wonderful...place...unforgettable experience!!
We just returned from a 7 night stay at Casa Marmaris on the Osa Peninsula. My husband and I traveled to this remote location with two other couple friends. We are all adventure seekers but we all have small children and wanted a quiet place to retreat to. We found it! Getting to this home is an adventure in and of itself. The drive to Casa Marmaris is no joke! When they say they recommend 4 wheel drive they mean it. Once you find your way though the travel is worth it because when you go through the house gates it is like you are on your own planet. The nature that others mentioned is true. Ximena was very helpful and easy to work with when booking the home. We had Desiree cook us breakfast and dinner and were so thankful we did. Her food was amazing! Her husband Isaac was helpful with massage bookings and adventures. There was a cleaning service each day so the home was clean even though you are mostly outdoors.
We surfed, had massages at the house, took the 4-hour horse and waterfall rappelling tour set up by Isaac (it was awesome!), zip lined, hiked up streams in search of waterfalls, took a boat tour to fish and dolphin seek (which we found ), we took in sunrises and waded in our pool, soaked in nature and played a lot of 6 handed euchre with a beverage in our hands! The lighting was good but the hot water was spotty. A few things to know though about this house. There is no air conditioning. We were all fine with this but 2 of the guys had a hard time at night sleeping because they were hot/sweaty. We loved Martina’s bar/restaurant which is close. We also liked Los Delfines in Puerto Jimmenez.
At Casa Marmaris you go to sleep early and rise early. You are on nature’s schedule. The waves put you to sleep and the monkey’s talking wake you. It’s something you won’t soon forget.
A fair warning to potential travelers traveling in the near future. There is construction next door to this house. It was going on while we were there. It was the one negative of the home. It is obviously temporary but it did change how we approached the day. The workers arrived at 7am and were there until about 4pm. They take an hour lunch. It was loud. Sawing and hammering. We brought a music speaker and played our music to limit the noise. We also planned our adventures during this time to avoid the noise. I will admit when they left each day we were happy! Ximena did discount the cost of our food to make up for it.
We just returned from ten-day stay at Casa Marmaris on the Osa Peninsula. This is one of those rare instances where the photos and description on the website simply do not do justice to how beautiful the place is. The view from the main building is spectacular. You look out over the amazing turquoise waters where Golfo Dulce meets the Pacific Ocean. We watched four species of monkeys, Scarlet Macaws (everywhere!), Toucans, Parrots, Parakeets, Hummingbirds, Caracaras, Coatis, Raccoons, and more, right there on the property. The rooms were very clean and the beds were very comfortable. The Plunge Pool was kept sparkling clean by Isaac. The walk down Matapalo Beach Road never failed to deliver great wildlife sightings. For the adventurous, if you turn left when leaving the house, and go all the way down the road, you will see a steep hill with two concrete strips for a car to drive. You can go up this hill, or take the path on the right just before the hill to get to the 100 foot tall King Louis Waterfall. Wear shoes that can get wet, and bring a walking stick. The going is tough. The caretakers, Isaac and Desiree, were wonderful. They were very responsive, without interfering with our privacy. We had a few issues with intermittent hot water, but a replacement water heater was on order. The road into Matapalo is an adventure that absolutely requires 4-Wheel Drive (and decent ground clearance). By the end of the trip, I was getting pretty good at avoiding the worst of the rocks and potholes, but some were unavoidable. We did the boat trip to Corcavado National Park, since it was supposed to be less crowded that way. The park itself was spectacular, but the boat trip was disappointing. The boat arrived over an hour late, and the time at the park was only 4 hours (for an "All-Day" trip). The boat ride was insanely bumpy (worse than Matapalo Beach Road). In hindsight, we would have driven to the park instead and spent much more time seeing wildlife. Martina's bar/restaurant is a great place to get good food, good drinks and you can get great souveneirs and homemade ice cream on Friday nights at their Farmers Market.
Thanks to its closeness to Corcovado National Park, Matapalo´s exuberant wild life is within reach. You´ll see macaws flying over your head, the 4 types of monkeys that inhabit Costa Rica going through the property or if you go out for a walk.
Located near Matapalo, Corcovado National Park is the largest and only tropical primary lowland rainforest in the world – home to monkeys, dantas and jaguars. National Geographic has called it 'the most biologically intense place on Earth in terms of biodiversity'
Puerto Jimenez. This main town in the Osa Peninsula region is located 45 min by car to Matapalo (it is the closest town available). Puerto Jimenez is one of the gateways to Corcovado National Park, from where many excursions can be arranged, and where supplies can be found. In Puerto Jimenez you´ll find the closest hospital, airport, supermarket and gas station.
Also if you wish to dine out or go for a drink and you have a car, you can go to Lapa Rios Hotel, Bosque del Cabo Hotel, Encanta La Vida Lodge or Martina´s Bar.
