Iguana house narrative

Imagine a man who so loved his house that he brought it all the way from the mainland, across 35 miles of sea, risking complete disintegration of the structure, and, finally, planting it in a beautiful spot on the Isla Bonita, 4 ½ north of San Pedro, where it was eventually renovated by an American architect from whom the current owners bought it, amidst stories and legends that had arisen around the house over its long life.

This is a totally renovated, 3-bedroom, 3-bath house with a spacious living/dining room, and a modern kitchen. it can accommodate up to six people comfortably. It has over a thousand square feet of deck which faces the reef just beyond the front gate. The sea breeze makes it a great place to hang out and enjoy the sun and the sea; and the reef beckons one to kayak and snorkel and fish. The private pier has been rebuilt and a modest swimming feature has been added.

Fishing trips, tours to amazing snorkeling and diving sites as well as adventures to the mainland to visit Mayan ruins, can be taken right from the front door of the iguana house. Or you can take out a kayak and have your own adventure on the reef.

This is a neighborhood house and, although you are about four and a half miles from San Pedro, you’ll find friendly neighbors, great restaurants and a convenient grocery store within walking distance. If you need to go to town, there is a regular coastal ferry service which makes the run to and from town. Private water taxis are also available. Golf carts can be rented by the day or the week and, although the roads can be rough, are often the most convenient option. The most cost effective option will be determined by how many people are traveling together.

About Jim Benjamin

The Iguana House is a team effort: Christina does the bookings, sends out the rental agreements and directs the payment options. She works for CNF Catering, a lovely company owned by my sister, and her main love is fashion. We (Jim and Nicky) are on the island and make sure our guests are properly oriented and settled in.

Nicky is from Rugby, England ("...where the game was invented") and I'm from Santa Fe, New Mexico. We met in Santa Fe 10 years ago while Nicky was visiting. Between us, we have 6 grown kids and four grandchildren (and counting).

I bought this house in 2008 when Nicky and I were visiting. We looked at condos and apartments, but wanted something with more character and possibilities, and also a fence for our dogs. Only a free standing home could offer that and the Iguana House was perfect.

We discovered how much it sucked to be without water and we added a fifty thousand gallon cistern which provides filtered rainwater year round. And as the Iguana House became more popular, we added an owner's cottage at the rear of the property.

Nicky is happiest when engaged with people and she offers our quests information with charm and humor. In fact, our guests often mention her in the reviews. She makes the guests feel as though they were the only ones to ever visit the Iguana House. She is well-loved and well connected on the island.

Together, we want to provide our guests the best Caribbean vacation possible.

My husband and I stayed at the house with our three teenage children for a week.

The property served our needs and was very nice and clean. The view was beautiful and felt very secluded. The kayaks allowed us to kayak out to smaller coral reefs and anchor. Access to Coral Divers next door was very convenient.

Great house, location, view, and service

This is a great house for anyone wanting to avoid hotels. The owner lives in a house behind the rental house and is eager to help at any time. There's a dive shop next-door that uses the dock in front of the house, which is incredibly convenient. We would happily stay here again.

Beautiful, romantic getaway!

We stayed here for a week on honeymoon, and could not have been happier. It was just the two of us, but the house was big enough for many more to stay comfortably. The property is about four miles north of San Pedro, away from the bulk of people, but there are plenty of beach bars and restaurants to discover close by. Secret Beach is a short golf-cart ride away, and is an absolute must!

The house itself is beautiful, spacious, and well-equipped. There is even a barbecue on the back porch, and the neighbor will sell you fresh-caught fish and lobster if you ask. The view is incredible! Beautiful tropical beach just outside the front door, and as far as you can see in either direction. The dock is lovely, and a small staircase allows you easy entrance into the warm and glorious waters. The ocean breeze is wonderful and really kept the mosquitoes at bay. We really couldn't have been happier.

There is a water taxi that will take you into town from the pier just up the beach, but we recommend renting a golf cart to get around. There is so much to explore nearby down little dirt roads, you'll be happy to have it. The roads have improved since some of the earlier reviews, with only a few really bumpy stretches between here and town.

Jim was the most gracious host, and you'll be in really good hands. He went out of his way to make us feel welcome, and was available whenever we had questions.

This place is incredible. You'll love it here!
