4 Season 3 Bedroom 1.5 Bath Guesthouse In Vermont's Northeast Kingdom

This 3 story guest house maintains rustic charm while offering modern amenities. Located on over 50 acres of land with about a mile of river front.

In Summer find great trout fishing just outside the front door. Fall foliage is lovely in September and October along the river during leaf season. In Winter you'll find yourself directly on the VAST trail with plenty of parking, nearby skiing at Burke or Jay Peak and snow machine storage.

The house is attached to an old barn in a small village in the Northeast Kingdom. Enjoy life 'in town' while being away from it all in a rural setting.

About Tim Marschke and Cheryl Potter Marschke

We own a yarn company called Cherry Tree Hill and do a lot of traveling to source fibers. The photo shows us in Peru last year.

Tim is a retired dairy farmer who loves to fish. In 2012 he caught the largest river trout on record in Vermont in front of the guesthouse. Cheryl is the author of nine books, most recently a fiber filled young adult fantasy novel.

In 2013 we opened the Hanson House Retreat center to host knitting, dyeing and writing workshops and to rent it for weddings, parties and family reunions. Our events grew so popular that we decided to renovate and list our guest house along the river as well. We call it The Annex, because it is attached to an 1870's dairy barn on our property that we now use only for storage.

Our farm is called the Fuller Farm and was once a family owned dairy with hundreds of acres. The farm passed through the family for generations and the Annex was built for one of the grandsons when he married. When he died with no heirs, the house went to auction and we purchased it. We think of ourselves as the second owners, although it the house was in the Fuller family for over 100 years.

Tim Marschke and Cheryl Potter Marschke purchased this farmhouse in 1999

Why Tim Marschke and Cheryl Potter Marschke chose Barton

We love the Northeast Kingdom and waterfront living of any kind. The fact that the house sits on over 50 acres of land with almost a mile of riverfront appealed to us immensely, because in a quirky way it is 'down town' too. Just cross the bridge a few hundred yards away and you are in Barton Village..

What makes this farmhouse unique

We love the village views from the 3 season porches, and the privacy of rural life with the convenience of being in town. We love to fish, canoe and kayak and there are so many great rivers and lakes just minutes away. We do not ski or snowmobile the way we used to, but the VAST trail crosses our land and there are plenty of ski mountains and cross country ski trails close by.

The house is easy to get to as well, just a mile or so off Interstate 91. For city life, Montreal is just up the highway and makes a great cultural getaway.

Wonderful, quaint, quiet

  • 5 of 5

Our family absolutely loved staying here. Everybody was friendly, accommodating and responded quickly to questions or issues. The property is beautiful and the annex was perfect for our purposes. There is a country charm to the simplicity of everything here. Everything is functional and well maintained. We were given free reign on the property which at the time of our stay had 3 friendly horses which our children got to interact with. Everything is close, including scenic Crystal Lake. The highway is close enough to get places but far enough not to be heard.

I would absolutely recommend this property to friends and family. Truly a welcome and calming vacation!

Amazing country wedding!!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the Hanson House for our wedding party to stay in for the weekend (along with the annex across the street for people who wanted their own space). We also rented the barn for our wedding and rehearsal. It was absolutely perfect!!! The house has more than enough room for everyone (plus the catering kitchen gave extra food storage for our caterers) and the barn and patio accommodated our 140 guest wedding plus DJ booth, photobooth, and bar with ease. We had yard games set up in the patio and the food tent and no one was cramped for space. We truly could not have asked for anything more perfect!! We wouldn't change a thing about our country barn wedding<3 Cheryl and Tim were amazing and so helpful! They stopped by a few times to make sure we were all set and to see if we needed anything which was so sweet!! We really felt like we were at home and our wedding party is already talking about going back next summer!!! Absolutely love this place!!!

Affordable, Central Jay-Burke Accommodations

  • 4 of 5

Great accommodations for a weekend Jay Peak & Burke Mountain double header. More spacious than it looks & plenty enough room for 6 adults. Walking distance to local breakfast joint. 5m off highway. < 20m to Burke, ~30m to Jay. While older in look/feel pricing was unbelievable, owners friendly, and location great.

Great property with even better Owners

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay. everything was as described. I would like to mention a few things that made our stay pleasurable. First I was impressed that the pots and pans were new and none stick. Yes it`s a very small thing but staying at other rentals in my life I felt that the owners wanted us to feel at home and didn`t just use hand me downs for there rental.

Secondly, on the first morning (early), after a late arrival, we had some problems with the water pipes. I was so impressed with the quick response from the owners. The problem was completely out of theirs or our control, (due to weather) but they were so quick in finding solutions that I have no dough in my mind that they did everything that was possible.

I would have no problem recommending this rental to friends, family and even strangers. Just don`t book it the weekend that we plan on going for next year, as we will be coming back. :)

feels like home

  • 3 of 5

The location is exactly as shown on the photo. clean and welcoming. Pros: 3 bedroom located on the second floor, close to grocery (walking distance), quiet neighbourhood, the large porch. Cons: few items were missing to do the dishes, no exterior balcon to sit outside (but the porch is covered of windows). I would come again and I recommend this home.

This is a four season area with lots to do, but not very populated. You will not be stuck in traffic or have to wait in line. There are plenty of summer and winter festivities in the Northeast Kingdom and if you want a taste of city life, Montreal is a short drive away!
