About this property

Unique Log cabin at Bearpaw Ranch on the Gila River

The Pond Cabin at Bearpaw Ranch is perfect for a small family or 2 couples. It is a beautifully crafted log cabin with two bedrooms. Our guests like to just sit on the porch in the shade and soak in the serenity. It sits on a gentle creek which feeds one of our 4 ponds, with the Gila River just beyond that. The kitchen is all decked out in antique style and you can learn to do some creative baking with the 1927 gas range. It does have a modern apartment size frig, and we've managed to provide modern conveniences such as toaster, microwave, coffeemaker, etc in the small kitchen without sacrificing its rustic charm.
The two full-size beds don fluffy white sheets on excellent quality mattresses. There is a loveseat in the living area that can accommodate another person.
This cabin is situated at the end of the road...the last cabin on the ranch. The serenity and solace is the most mentioned quality that our guests refer to. Imagine having a tree-filled park with a pond just outside your front door. The pond has an island where you can lounge the day away on the hammock. Hundreds of species of birds are spotted there and along the river just beyond the pond. Or row around the pond on the boat, throw in a line, and see if you can catch a bass or catfish. Catch and release fishing is allowed on all of my ponds.
When you want to wander a bit you will find that the ranch is great middle point in which to explore everything that the Gila Wilderness has to offer. We are just a short drive down from the Turkey Creek entrance to the wilderness, and the Mogollon/Glenwood area is just 20 miles up Hwy 180. Silver City is a beautiful 40 minute drive away where you will find numerous museums, coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, and shops.

Ideal for hiking, horseback riding, hunting and fishing, Bearpaw Ranch is also close to Bill Evans fishing lake and a short drive up to the Gila wilderness. Our property lies on the Gila River and so you will have complete access.

We have a large barn and fenced field if you are bringing your horses. Ideal for hunting in the fall and winter. The wilderness begins a few miles up the road. Perfect for hiking and climbing, and bird-watching. There is a wild-bird preserve just a few miles south of us. Of course the bosque here on the property affords great access to spotting numerous bird species.

We are located just a few miles from the Gila Wilderness. Our property straddles the Gila River and the bosque is delightful for bird-watching. You will enjoy walking about the property and watching the wildlife on and around our ponds. You will have complete access to the river and you can enjoy the hiking, rafting and bird-watching that the river and its habitat provide.

In addition, ours is a premier location for star-gazing. New Mexico is the only state in the union with night light legislation and Gila is one of the darkest places in the country. The property has a large flat hill that is a premium spot for night sky observation and we have hosted several amateur astronomers over the years.
Bearpaw Ranch also has barns and fenced fields for horses and is an excellent place to stay with your horses.

Silver City is 30 miles to the southeast and has many art galleries and restaurants. Bearpaw Ranch is a great place to stay during the Blues Festival, the World Class bicycle races, or the Wild West Rodeo. The hotels in Silver City fill up, but you can take the short drive out to the Gila and rest in the quiet and peace, refueling for another fun time enjoying Silver City's great events.

In the mountains north of Silver City you can visit the old western town of Pinos Altos, and continue up to the Gila Cliff Dwellings. A visit to the copper mines is also a must, with a stop at Lake Roberts on the way! Also on this trip you can stop in San Lorenzo at the winery and/or the bakery! Lovely day trip!

To the northwest of us is historic Mogollon with its art gallery, antique shop, and museum. Near Mogollon is the little village of Glenwood, with the state fish hatchery and the famous Catwalk. The Catwalk is a favorite hiking spot with a lovely picnic area.
There is plenty to do in the area, but many folks find that they are content to walk around the property, visit our horses, watch our ducks swim around in the pond, or just sit and listen to the quiet. This is a perfect retreat if you just want to get away...far away from the rat race. This is real out-west country living.

RANCH EATS! There's just one drawback to how wonderfully isolated we are. No restaurants. But, we've solved that problem for you. We have a semi-retired chef who will prepare and deliver wonderful meals to you. It is a limited menu but all scrumptious!!! We will provide details at booking.

We have 4 cabins here that are all separated by a very distant & comfortable space. At least 200 yards apart with plenty of trees. See also the Adobe vrbo # 472149 and the Gatehouse vrbo #173566

Cozy little hideaway!
A completely painless checkin and checkout procedure, lovely clean accommodations that feature incredibly hot water and a well appointed kitchen, hosts were available but unobtrusive, there’s no cell service for t mobile or Verizon and nominal internet but you won’t miss it between books/games/a plethora of things to do on property and in the area.

Fantastic get away for a few days of outdoor enjoyment!!
We had an absolutely lovely time at this property! It was so nice to have time away with just family to enjoy the outdoors with some hiking, playing games, enjoying beautiful sunsets, and being together as a family! This property provided just the right amount of amenities, while still feeling connected to nature and secluded! We absolutely had a fantastic time! So many wonderful memories were made!

One of the best vacation rentals ever
The cabin itself was one of the most beautifully constructed buildings I've ever stayed in. The surroundings are lovely. Highly recommended. I will return.

Hi there! I am Rose and my husband and I moved here from northern NM 41 years ago. He passed away in 2010 and I have been developing the guest ranch since then. In the fall of 2022 my daughter, Grace, and her husband Zac, and their children moved here to take over operations so that I can "retire". The work load was becoming too much for me and I have been so happy to have them here! This is a small ranch. We now have mostly retired horses and mules. We have 3 head of Longhorn cattle. We recently added a herd of Soay sheep. They are a nearly extinct breed of small hair sheep from the British isles. We raise heritage breeds poultry including chickens, ducks, turkeys, and peafowl. Our livestock all live cage-free and free-range. No coops or stalls for our critters! We gladly share farm fresh eggs with our guests, when available, and you might find that they are the best eggs you ever ate! As an antique nut, my husband collected too many articles to fit in our old house. Bottles, mining tools, old dishes, stoves, tools, tins, crocks....etc So, he built a building to look like an old west store and you are welcome to go in and look at my collection. I call it the 'museum'...but it is really just a place to house my dust collectors. It's fun! The Cliff/Gila community is an eclectic mix of folks who love the Gila. There is one little gas station, a library, a Senior Citizen Center, a community clinic, a school, and a few churches. The Community Center has tennis/pickleball courts, a basketball court, and playground for the kids. This is a wonderful community to live in, and we are happy to share it with our guests.

Why they chose this property

I have lived on this property for 41 years. I'm a New Mexico native and grew up in Albuquerque. I moved here because I fell in love with the Gila River Valley. The cabins were not here when we purchased the property. They came later when my husband bought a sawmill and decided to build a cabin just for the challenge. This cabin was left unlived in until I began renting it out short term in 2010 after my husband passed away. He had built a similar cabin (the Gatehouse) years ago when we first purchased the sawmill. In the mid 2000's we purchased the property next door and that is how I acquired the Lanehouse and the Stewart House. I have been so happy to be able to share this wonderful place with so many travelers. I have met great folks from all over the US, Canada and even some from Europe.

What makes this property unique

Our property straddles the Gila River with complete access to the river. We also have small ponds and our guests are free to wander about the property and enjoy the river and ponds along with the bosque they create in a very private setting. Many dog-owners love staying here because it is a time when their city dogs can really feel what it is to be free and unleashed! We are on the edge of the Turkey Creek entry into the Gila Wilderness and many hikers love staying here because of the access to great hiking & birding spots. We are also between Glenwood and Silver City. A handy central location if you are hiking AND enjoying the museums, galleries and eateries of Silver City. I think the one important thing that my guests have told me they love the most is the peace and quiet. We live and work here and sometimes we are cultivating, cutting wood, making repairs, and in general just working...doing all the things that are demanded on a small ranch. But, people still feel a sense of peace. We go about our business and our guests must just feel like they are part of the ranch. It is an easy feeling here that is unique and most everyone comments on it. There are no outside lights so at night it is really dark and you can see the moon and the stars in all their glory. There is abundant wildlife. You are likely to see fox, raccoons, javalina, coyotes, rabbits and lizards, and many species of birds. All of this wildlife and quiet, yet we are just 2 or 3 minutes off of the paved road. You can't see or hear the road from the cabin, but it is easy to get into and out of our little ranch and the paved highway leads right to the little village of Gila just 3.4 miles down the road. It is a slower pace, less rules, more freedom. It is the desert southwest in the Land of Enchantment. I find that it is hard to explain. But, when you come...you will feel it. Gila is a wilderness, Gila is a river, Gila is a town, Gila is a state of mind!
