About the property

Stairway to Heaven is a charming cottage located on Lake Lure, surrounded by trees in a relaxing and peaceful setting. Very private, yet conveniently close to local supermarket, several restaurants and Chimney Rock. This cozy abode has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a queen sized sofa bed in the living room. The entire house has been remodeled, savoring the knotty pine wood walls.

Upon entrance, you will find 2 bedrooms, one has a queen sized bed, the other has a set of log style bunk beds. The bathroom has a tub and shower. The large kitchen has plenty of work space and is filled with all the amenities, including a K Cup coffee maker. It is open to the dining room which features a gas fire place and a rustic style wood dining room table that seats 8. A flat screened television hangs above the mantel and can be viewed from the kitchen, dining room and living room. Downstairs is the master suite with private bath, gas fire place, TV and sofa.

Beyond the master suite is an enclosed porch with a glider, rocking chair and Foosball table. Lift up the top of the Foosball table and you will find other fun games. From the porch, step outside onto our new deck. Here you can enjoy meals, a glass of wine and listen to the sounds of the birds, crickets and water from the damn.

Continue on down the stairs to the boat house which houses a kayak, paddle board and other fun water items. Our view of the damn is lovely and set in a quiet part of the lake which is perfect for swimming or lying on a raft.

Whether you are looking for romance, an escape from your every day life or a relaxing family getaway, Stairway to Heaven is the answer.

About Mara and Frank Butera

My parents built a summer home on Lake Lure in 1950. I have many wonderful memories swimming and water skiing here. As soon as I introduced Frank to Lake Lure, he fell in love with the place. So much so, we got married here under the Gazebo across from the beach. We knew that one day we would buy a home here. This became a family affair. My cousin's husband was the contractor. My husband being in the kitchen remodeling business built all of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets as well as the master suite furniture. The painted window in the living room was done by my cousin. And some of the photographs on the walls were taken by another cousin who is a professional photographer living in Lake Lure.

We love our cottage and Lake Lure and hope that all who stay here, enjoy the peace and tranquility that this wonderful place provides.

Mara and Frank Butera purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Mara and Frank Butera chose Lake Lure

We like that you can park directly in front of the house. Our street has easy access. No inclines for flat landers like ourselves. We feel like we are out in the woods, yet Ingles is only 2 miles away. The walk down to the boat house is great exercise. This house was in need of much repair, however we saw the potential and knew it was ours from the get go. I love the fact that we have so much land which we have future .plans to put in gardens. We also loved the knotty pine walls and wood floors and made a point of saving this.

What makes this cottage unique

We feel the house has so much charm. It is updated, yet rustic with an old time mountain feel. Our deck is wonderful any time, but we particularly love it at night. Sitting outside with a glass of wine and listening to the sounds of nature is as relaxing as it gets. And during winter, we love sitting in front of the fire place and playing board games or doing puzzles. We have been here for every season. My husband loves the winter when there are no leaves on the trees and you can see everything. I love the late spring when the trees are full and the flowers are beginning to blossom. Whatever your season, you can't miss.

A great getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had an excellent time. Although the weather was predicted to be cold and rainy, lake Lure delivered its special magic with mid 70's and sunny most of the week. We even got in the lake one day. Kayaking was terrific and we made it back to Chimney Rock which looks back to its usual spectacular beauty after last year's fire. Can't say enough about the great time we had. We are looking forward to out time scheduled in August. - Tim & Lisa

Awesome awesome!!

  • 5 of 5

We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Frank and Mara"so cottage. Extra touches abound from the kuerig coffee maker, gas grill, wonderful outdoor spaces, canoes, kayak, and paddle board to a basket full of towels for taking to the lake. Nice front load washer and dryer. The downstairs master suite is wonderful. Oh and the shower- we absolutely loved-tile and pebble stone with dual shower heads. Frank and Mara have done a wonderful job updating this home with all modern conveniences while maintaining the cottage feel with the knotty pine walls. Just cannot say enough about this place. We had an awesome time on the lake, in chimney rock, and at Harrah's casino. We will be back!!!

Beautiful views with Relaxation and Fun!

  • 5 of 5

This home is a beautiful home that is very well-kept with an extremely beautiful view. My wife and I had gone up with a good friend of ours to get away from the city for a few days. We enjoyed the outdoors so much! We took advantage of every single one of the decks. We read, drank coffee, drank wine, giggled and talked throughout the entire four days.

We also took our two small dogs who enjoyed the mountain-side so much. Arthur and Henry were tromping through the leaves chasing lizards or bathing in the sun on the dock.

The kitchen was well-appointed for cooking in the evenings and we even grilled out one night as well.

If you can't tell, we had so much fun and relaxation.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful home in the treetops. Just amazing!

Adorable lake house

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely long weekend at the Stairway to Heaven. The house is very comfortable, conveniently located, and well appointed with games and activities for the whole family. We took advantage of the canoe and had some lovely long rows in a choppy Lake Lure. Invigorating ;)

Such A Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

Although the Lake Lure community was under duress of mountain forest fires while we were visiting, it did nothing to mar the peaceful sanctuary and loveliness of the cabin and property itself. My sister and I had such a fun visit to the area; we will definitely bring our families back and spend more time there! Mara was so wonderful to keep in touch with us via text and phone to help facilitate any needs that we might have had. We spent our time doing wine tours (Catawba Valley Wine Trail - there are four wineries along that valley - Fantastic!), visiting Biltmore by candlelight as it is all "dressed up" for Christmas, and getting to know some of the locals. All-around great experience! The cabin is perfect for families and looks to be quite pet-friendly. Highly recommend!

Pleasant place to visit.

  • 4 of 5

Brilliant fall colors surrounding serene Lake Lure, a beautiful sight to wake up to. Canoeing or fishing from the dock, a relaxing end to a lovely day. The lure of the lake was good motivation to conquer the 100+ steps between the cottage and the dock. Cooking was easy enough with a well supplied kitchen and a nice Ingles very near by.
