About Erla Birgisdóttir

We are Erling Magnússon and Erla Birgisdóttir. We are a married couple of 37 years, parents of four daughters and grandparents of twelve wonderful children. Erling grew up in the area of our summer house, Föðurland, in a place called Kirkjulækjarkot. The land was originally given to him by his father who was a farmer in the area. That is were the name Föðurland comes from (e. Father's land). We have traveled a lot both in Iceland and abroad. We love our stunning amazing country and want everyone to be able to have the opportunity to come and visit and stay in our lovely country house.

Erla Birgisdóttir purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Erla Birgisdóttir chose Southern Region

Our property is very well located. It is placed right next to a well known heritage of the Icelandic Saga Brennu-Njáls saga. In addition to that the location offers a great variety of sightseeing in the area. Eyjafjallajökull the volcano is only 20 km away in line of sight, as well as Hekla and Katla the big volcanoes which are also short distance. There is also a variety of beautiful waterfalls in the area, for example, Seljalandsfoss which you can easily walk behind and Skógarfoss, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. There is also a great possibility to do daytrips to Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, and the amazing Jökulsárlón. Another daytrip could be done to the Golden circle to see the famous hot spring Geysir and waterfall Gullfoss, or the Westman Islands south of the coast line which is not far away and also to Þórsmörk, a stunning place about 50 km away.

Iceland is also rich of natural hot pools, one of the best known is Landamannalaugar which are located relatively close to the cottage and can easily be visited while staying there - a good day trip.

For sport fishing there is a good salmon river next to the cottage. Please contact owner in good advance if you are interested in fishing. We also recommend this website for anglers: A little company who offers day trips for mudshark fishing.

In addition to the great location, the nearby area is very quiet and nice to be in. Wake up to birds singing everywhere on summer mornings or sit by the fire in the evening. It all adds up to make your stay as comfy and cozy as possible.

What makes this cottage unique

After a long day's travel it is very nice to come back to the cottage, sit outside at the deck and enjoy the stillness, listen to the birds sing, and experience either the well known Icelandic long and bright summer nights or the Northern Lights during the wintertime. During wintertime the fireplace also brings specially cozy feelings inside the cottage after watching northern lights for example.

Cute cabin but dangerous to get to

  • 3 of 5

The cabin itself was cute and had everything we needed however getting to the cabin was difficult. We got stuck in snow trying to find it the first night. The second night even after knowing the way we had to go through a couple feet of icy water in the dark after the small bridge near the cabin. There is no other way to get there and it was dangerous and scary. If we didn’t have a truck there is no way we would have gotten through it. Beware.

Owner's Response: Hi Jill Thank you for staying at our cabin and I am sorry you got lost and did not find the cottage at first even though I sent you very detailed directions and address to put in your mobile. You did not get stucked on way to the cabin because you got lost and got stucked on that way but I am glad I could get a man to come and help you. We have the road to the cottage cleaned after snow storm so our guests will not be stocked there. As you know we tell all our guest to rent a 4x4 car because in Iceland we can have all kinds of weather during winter time. Unfortunatelly we had a very much snow and then rainy and stormy weather and yes there was a little flood after that bridge (very rarely) but it is not dangerous to drive through it in 4x4 car as reccomended. I am glad you enjoyed the cabin by it self and I wish you all the best

Loved our stay in South Iceland

  • 5 of 5

This little cottage in South Iceland was a wonderful escape for our family of four to explore South Iceland. After spending our first day driving the Golden Circle, Rettarsfit was the perfect location from which to explore some of the South Coasts best waterfalls, geysers and glaciers by car. The cottage itself was adorable and immaculately kept with a huge lawn all to ourselves, a swingset, two covered porches, a grill and a nice outdoor table for enjoying Iceland's long summer nights. The interior was perfect with a "sleeping room" consisting of a queen and bunk bed for the family, a connecting breezeway, and then a large family room/kitchen with a cute little woodburning stove, clothes washer, and bathroom with shower. We found the price very very reasonable for Iceland and the cabin had a lot of charm. We would definitely recommend to a friend, and especially to families with young kids.

Charming Getaway

  • 5 of 5

After Reykjavik, this was the perfect retreat for the two of us. We stayed mid-week so were all alone in the area. The tranquility of the surroundings made for a peaceful time. Day trips to the south were easy. There was a nice restaurant and good grocery store at the highway junction leading to the cottage a 10 minute drive away. The cottage was well equipped, tidy and spotless. Erla and Erling, our hosts, were very helpful. The pictures attached to the directions provided by email made finding the cottage a snap. The island scenery is spectacular. The Blue Lagoon touristy but worth it. The Golden Circle a must. We had hiking and rain gear so the weather was not a problem. Be prepared for inclement weather and all will be well. Thanks Erla and Erling.
