Photos and Description of this South holiday cottage

50 Sqm. Excellent for 4-5 people, one bedroom, great volcano view

Peaceful place to stay in during your holiday, one bedroom with one queen size bed and one bunk bed for two, as well as a comfort sofa in the living room which is easy to sleep in and a travel baby crib for infants and toddlers. The kitchen is fully equipped with washing machine. The living room has a fireplace. Shower is in the bathroom. Outside we have a big deck and a playground for the kids. There is a lot of interesting places in the neighborhood and surrounding areas. The cottage is in perfect area for observing the northern lights and the lunar eclipse when that comes up. The reason is there is no light pollution in the area so the night sky is very clear.

If you are interested we can offer you a day tour by jeep and you will be able to see stunning nature which you can not see from the motorway, just let us know and we will give you an offer. See our own webside:

About Erla Birgisdóttir

We are Erling Magnússon and Erla Birgisdóttir. We are a married couple of 37 years, parents of four daughters and grandparents of twelve wonderful children. Erling grew up in the area of our summer house, Föðurland, in a place called Kirkjulækjarkot. The land was originally given to him by his father who was a farmer in the area. That is were the name Föðurland comes from (e. Father's land). We have traveled a lot both in Iceland and abroad. We love our stunning amazing country and want everyone to be able to have the opportunity to come and visit and stay in our lovely country house.

Erla Birgisdóttir purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Erla Birgisdóttir chose Iceland

Our property is very well located. It is placed right next to a well known heritage of the Icelandic Saga Brennu-Njáls saga. In addition to that the location offers a great variety of sightseeing in the area. Eyjafjallajökull the volcano is only 20 km away in line of sight, as well as Hekla and Katla the big volcanoes which are also short distance. There is also a variety of beautiful waterfalls in the area, for example, Seljalandsfoss which you can easily walk behind and Skógarfoss, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. There is also a great possibility to do daytrips to Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, and the amazing Jökulsárlón. Another daytrip could be done to the Golden circle to see the famous hot spring Geysir and waterfall Gullfoss, or the Westman Islands south of the coast line which is not far away and also to Þórsmörk, a stunning place about 50 km away.

Iceland is also rich of natural hot pools, one of the best known is Landamannalaugar which are located relatively close to the cottage and can easily be visited while staying there - a good day trip.

For sport fishing there is a good salmon river next to the cottage. Please contact owner in good advance if you are interested in fishing. We also recommend this website for anglers: A little company who offers day trips for mudshark fishing.

In addition to the great location, the nearby area is very quiet and nice to be in. Wake up to birds singing everywhere on summer mornings or sit by the fire in the evening. It all adds up to make your stay as comfy and cozy as possible.

What makes this cottage unique

After a long day's travel it is very nice to come back to the cottage, sit outside at the deck and enjoy the stillness, listen to the birds sing, and experience either the well known Icelandic long and bright summer nights or the Northern Lights during the wintertime. During wintertime the fireplace also brings specially cozy feelings inside the cottage after watching northern lights for example.

Wonderful getaway in a charming cabin!

  • 5 of 5

Had a great 2 day retreat away in Erla's cabin located in rural Southern Iceland. Erla made the whole process so incredibly easy, gave us excellent suggestions for things to do, and provided clear directions to the cabin. We had no issues at all and thoroughly enjoyed our time in their home. We were fortunate enough to get clear skies and got to see the glaciers right from the cabin deck!

Wished we could have stayed longer!

Beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is perfect for a family to use as a base to visit southern Iceland. The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped for all our needs in a quiet beautiful setting. The cottage is cozy but there’s plenty of space for the kids to run around in the grounds with a small swing set and a lovely deck with a view of the mountains. It’s a short drive to several beautiful waterfalls and other amazing scenic views.

Cozy cottage

  • 4 of 5

we stayed here for 3 nights in July. it was a bit chilly outside so the heaters were a lovely touch. Finding the place is very difficult using the GPS so make sure you follow the instructions from the owners, they were easy to follow and took us straight there. The cottage is near to many of the sights but you feel like you are a million miles away, very peaceful and quiet, and surrounded by amazing views. Well stocked kitchen and washing machine were a nice touch, beds were comfy and black out blinds were helpful.

Beautiful location, comfortable home

  • 5 of 5

We had difficulty finding the cabin, but were lucky that Erla and Erling were there and Erla came to find us (thank you!). I guess I missed an important email with these instructions. We had a GPS but Icelandic rural addresses are very different, using names rather than street and number, so they don't fit the format! I think more prominent signage would also help. Once we arrived, we loved the location and had interesting conversations with the owners about the volcanoes nearby. The cabin is used as a vacation home and has a personal touch. We had great weather and enjoyed having peaceful breakfasts outside on the spacious deck. Everything was very comfortable, but seems a bit crowded with storage items, knickknacks, pillows, etc. Location is very convenient to numerous southern coast sights. Overall it was a great way to begin our Icelandic holiday! We would stay there again. Word of warning: you can drive and sightsee all night in the midnight sun, but can only go to stores and restaurants during open hours, so watch the clock!

Very comfortable cottage in a great location and with fantastic views.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage contains everything you need for a very comfortable stay. The beds were very comfortable and the curtains darkened the room to allow easy sleep through the midnight-sun. The kitchen is stocked with all the tools and utensils to cook a real meal and there is a BBQ outside too. There were also all the basics like coffee, tea, sugar, spices, oil etc that we could use.

The view is breathtaking and the area is very quiet and relaxing. The house is close to the main attractions of South Island. We saw a multitude of waterfalls, including the one you can walk behind as well as the black beach, explored the town of Vik, and it was all within an hours drive. It is also possible to go to the glaciers that is not far from the house or even the lake of Icebergs, but that is around 3 hours drive away.

Erla was a great host and made booking into the cottage really easy and stress free for us despite our very late arrival. She also provided lots of shopping, traveling and sightseeing tips, and even arranged a 4x4 guided sightseeing trip with Erling to the midlands area for us. We saw many incredible places we would never have found on our own. I highly recommend this.

A wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our family (including a 7 year-old and a 2-year old) absolutely loved this place. It was very secluded yet had all the amenities we needed for a great stay. We'll definitely rent it again next time we're in Iceland!
