D A Mihelic purchased this house in 1989
We grew up in the area and took advantage of the recreational activities as children. Wife is a life resident of the area. We moved back to the area after military service and bought a water lot in 1987.
We have a rich history of100+ years which connects us with the Ohio, Erie and Pennsylvania/Ohio Canals, Delaware Indians, Portage Path, Ohio Dept of Wildlife, Portage Lakes State Park, Connecticut Land Grants, the Western Reserve, prohibition, farming, coal mining and water sports.
Today, most residents living in the area will tell you they live in Portage Lakes which encompasses the cities of New Franklin, Green and Coventry Twp. If a resident tells another Ohio resident they are from Portage Lakes, most will know where you live. When given the official name of your resident city, the majority will have no idea where you live.
During the 1980's and 1990's a transition from weekend cottages to upscale modern homes began. As Carolyn Vogenitz, author of 'Portage Lakes Then & Now' has stated, it became a sardine & caviar look. Many a new upscale home might sit next to a tiny cottage dating back to the early 1900's.

We rented this beautiful house with our son-in-laws parents. We are on the verge of being first-time grandparents. We traveled from Cincinnati, Dayton and South Point Ohio because our daughter was too pregnant to travel. The house made the perfect location to share meals and bond. The owner was an excellent host and everything about the house and surroundings made us feel like we were at home. We highly recommend this property!
Wonderful property. Gracious host. Good location.
Beautiful home with everything you need inside. Owners were very nice. I booked at last minute did not really read much reviews so I was little surprised that the family lives upstairs and renting their downstairs apartment but other than hearing foot steps we didn't know there is anyone else. Thanks for letting us stay.
We couldn't be more pleased with our stay on Portage Lakes. The accommodations were quiet, spacious and had all of the comforts of home! The setting was breathtaking with a grass lawn extending from a wonderful patio all the way to an inlet of the lake. Ducks, tons of birds and other wildlife were always entertaining as we ate breakfast either while inside looking out of big, picture windows or outside under the umbrella of the patio table. We will definitely try to stay at the home on Portage Lakes again if we find ourselves in Ohio for another visit!
Lovely property with spacious accommodations. David graciously took us on a lovely 2 hour tour of the lake. How wonderful! The master suite offers quiet solitude. The other bedroom is perfect for kids who don't mind the sounds of the cute dogs and maybe a parrot? The pinball machine was a huge hit for our 4 pre-teen and teen kids. We were out and about most of the day, and wish we could have been around ire to enjoy the lovely accommodations!
We had such a nice relaxing vacation. The scenery was breathtaking. The house was so clean and everything you needed was provided. I'd definitely would come back to vacation here again.
