The Wilderness Lodge was founded in 1969 by James and Nansi Janes (my grandparents). Jim wanted to create a unique place in the image of a european style inn. As you enter the lodge you are greeted by the main dining room and a huge round fireplace. The natural rustic feel of the hand hewn beams with the granite floor and bar instantly feel as though you have stepped back in time. There are 9 available guest rooms with a max capacity of 31. There are 7 bathrooms in the upstairs and 2 downstairs. I am also available to be your private Chef during your stay your stay so please inquire about menu options when you book if you don't feel like cooking for yourself. The Kitchen was fully upgraded in January 2015 with a Vulcan Convection oven and 6 burner top, Vulcan IR Salamander Broiler, Garland 36" flat top with a conventional oven and a commercial dish machine.
There is a huge selection of area attractions to fill your days. We are close to multiple wineries in the North east Area as well as a couple of fantastic brewpubs such as Southern Tier, Voodoo, and Sprague Farms. The Beaches of Presque Isle and Bemus point are both easy drives. There are 3 Casinos within an hour. When you book the Lodge for your stay you will have the entire place to yourself including all of the grounds and a full commercial kitchen. The lodge sits on 350 acres of private land and the trail network expands over 1200 acres including the neighbor property that we manaintain. Enjoy hiking on 26 miles of groomed trail, fishing in the pond, or shooting on our private ranges. (10yd, 50yd, 100yd, 250yd, and open access out to 500yd) There are frequently deer at the feeders in the back yard and the nights here are even more beautiful than the days because of our extremely low level of light pollution. On a clear night literally millions of stars are visible. There is a stocked fishing pond on the property (no barbed hooks please) and it is also fun to go and feed the collection of Japanese Koi. There are multiple campsites and fire pits spread around the property as well. Please allow us to prepare your group a picnic lunch and deliver it to any spot on the property that you choose.
The lodge has always been a part of my life. Although I have lived in Meadville, Pittsburgh, London and elsewhere, the lodge has always been the center of my heart. I live in an apartment on property with by amazing wife Emily and my 6 yr old daughter Tenly. I am a 2000 graduate of Allegheny College and a lifetime outdoor enthusiast. I am also available if desired to teach classes in woodcraft and sustainable forestry.
Ryan Janes purchased this lodge in 2006
I have always known that the Wilderness Lodge is a one of a kind place. It is hard to put into words the unique nature of this place but I can say this much. There is nothin quite like it and once you experience it you will be back. The vast majority of out guests have been coming for 10 years or more, some as many as 30 years.
This is the perfect place for a family of outdoor enthusiasts
Wilderness Lodge was a fun venue for our family's early Christmas celebration. Even the "White Christmas" blizzard arrived on cue! Ryan, the owner, catered a delicious Italian dinner for the evening of our arrival which made it easy and fun for all of us. The Lodge has a wonderful gathering room with a huge wood-burning fire pit, and lots of room to spread out.
The caution I would advise is that this is a place best suited for YOUNG, nimble guests. The bedrooms are located on the second floor requiring a fairly long, steep staircase assent. Also, the en suite bathrooms are EXTREMELY small and almost impossible for a tall, long-legged or large person to maneuver in - definitely not accessible to a handicapped individual. We were only there for three nights so the two seniors in our party did manage, but If mobility is an issue with anyone in your party I would suggest you consider carefully.
Thank you Ryan for ALL your help and we wish you continued success with your Wilderness Lodge!
I was responsible for planning my grandma's 80th surprise birthday weekend with her close family (7 different families and 26 people). Not even a week before the location we had booked for months called and cancelled our reservation. In a panic I began to look for a new venue. That is when I called Ryan at the Wilderness Lodge. He answered his phone and respectfully listened to my concerning story. At the end of the conversation he stated he was going to do everything possible so we could be in the lodge by the weekend which involved a great deal of organizing as the facility wasn't even cleaned. He pulled it off and all of our family was able to accommodate the change. The surprise went off without a hitch and for the first time in my grandma's life all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were able to be together for a full 2 days. It was the perfect location for our gathering with tons of bedrooms, bathrooms, a great private outdoor backyard, walking trails, a commercial kitchen, and the whole downstairs being a gathering space. The whole family was talking about how we should do this every year. Thank you Ryan for accommodating my family with very short notice, you saved our special surprise for our grandma!
House is really nice and old style which was the reason for our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the vacation. Most importantly Ryan was always helpful even at mid night. We love the environment where the house is located. Plenty of rooms and bathrooms. Outside of the backyard is really beautiful. We wish we could go exactly in fall color that would have been more perfect.
All together it was one of the best vacation stay we have ever had and totally different style. we will book this house again in near future.
Beautiful, expansive property. We came for 3 days with 20 people and had a blast. The kitchen made cooking for everyone a breeze. If you love the outdoors, there was tons to do not only at the Lodge itself, but at nearby Findley lake.
Only downside, which I will not deduct anything from the lodge for, but the roads were a slight shock. Don't bring a good car, bring your hardiest ones. Other than that, thank you Ryan for everything!
Its a perfect Place for Family Re-Union.We had a great time here. The Owner Ryan is very friendly and respond quickly whenever you need any help .
Overall the property at Wilderness Lodge was impressive and beautiful. Our family thoroughly enjoyed the trails, shooting range, fire pits and gorgeous weather for a reunion weekend. It was a little unexpected that the owners live onsite, but Ryan was great to work with. Our group was about 20 people big and there were plenty of beds for everyone. The bathrooms upstairs were very small and most rooms need some TLC and updates. Overall though, rustic lodge experience for a fun, family weekend.
Though you will feel completely removed from the rest of the world during your stay at The Wilderness Lodge there is a huge number of options in the local area. The North East wine country is close at hand as are a number of golf courses. There are organized trail rides and runs in the area throughout the year as well as our local country fair. In the winter the Wilderness Lodge is Pennsylvania's first ski touring center. We focus on traditional as well as skate skiing and snowshoeing on our 26 mile trail network. There are two downhill resorts close and a third a little more than an hour away. We highly recommend anyone who stays here in the summer to check out the Bemus Point area for relaxing by the water, boat rentals, and a couple of really good restaurants like The Italian Fisherman. If you are into Hiking, not only do we have our own trail system bur we are very close to the Fred J. Cusimano Westside Overland Trail and to Panama Rocks. Just down the hill from the Lodge is the beautiful waterway of French Creek to the south and 20 mile creek to the north as well as Howard Eaton Reservoir with some excellent fishing opportunities.
