This large two bedroom apartment (1,000 square feet 92.90 square meters) with an 11 foot (3.35 meters) high ceiling is the perfect example of historical and contemporary Brooklyn living.

The house was built in 1909 and is listed for its architectural significance in both the United States and New York State Register of Historical Places. The apartment is located on the third floor of a large well maintained brownstone townhouse that has retained most of its original architectural components including; seven fireplaces, bow front windows, decorative masonry, oak staircase, 11 foot tall pier mirror in hallway, wainscoting and mosaic tile entryway floor. There is a skylight which brings natural light into the stairway.

The apartment is bathed in natural light and has a large eat-in kitchen. The kitchen table is a stylish large midcentury breakfast bar. The kitchen is excellently designed for cooking and dining. The kitchen is fully stocked to suit the needs of most cooks. The Brita water filter provided makes NYC tap water even more delicious.

The master bedroom is extremely large and has a beautiful fireplace original to the building. The furniture is a combination of antiques and contemporary pieces. There is a queen size sleigh bed in this room situated in front of a three window bow front. The amount of sun that bathes both bedrooms is truly pleasurable. There is a large marble table in the room with a 1950's wooden 'atomic shaped base' and matching chairs.

In brownstone townhouses the second bedroom was traditionally called 'the gentleman's bedroom'. It is smaller than the other bedroom but also accommodates a queen size bed and has its own closet/storage area.

The living room has its original period fireplace, midcentury Scandinavian string chairs, a wrought iron glass top table and a trundle bed/couch which comfortably sleeps two adults. This room has its original beautiful parquet wood floor. An Austen Air Hepa air filter is provided for your healthful pleasure

The bathroom is as sunny and airy as the rest of the apartment. It has its original green antique shell tile accents on the wall and original cast iron claw foot tub -- which is perfect for a long deep soak after a day of sightseeing . This tub is much larger than contemporary tubs and has an overhead shower attachment. The bathroom's Lucite storage unit houses a plethora of towels, complimentary toiletries and is topped by a sun loving ponytail palm.

OWNER OCCUPIED: This is very similar to a bed and breakfast without the additional cost. Unlike most vacation rentals the owner and his family live in the building. There is usually someone there to answer your questions or give you a native New Yorker's advice on this city. The building's owner is a published author and will give a Free personally inscribed edition of one of his coffee table sized art/history of NY books to every group who stays at his home for at least five days. This is a non-smoking building.

PLEASE NOTE: The apartment is on the 2nd floor so you will be walking up the stoop (stairs leading up to the entranceway pictured below) and then two flights of internal stairs. There is no elevator.

Why Michael chose Brooklyn

This property is special, not only is it listed in both the NY State and National Register of Historical places for its architectural significance but it was built relatively late for a brownstone townhouse 1909 -- so the rooms are very large, much larger than the brownstones built earlier and the ceilings are very high. The house has many of the original architectural details, which are lacking in many of the recently restored buildings.

What makes this house unique

The bathroom has the house's original cast iron claw foot tub. These bathtubs are much larger and deeper than contemporary tubs. Having a good long soak after a day of exploring NYC is an added benefit.

I'm also a collector. The furniture, artwork and just feel of the house reflect my particular taste.

  • The bathroom is large and airy. There is an antique cast iron claw foot tub that is perfect for a long deep soak after a day of sightseeing. The tiles are also original to the house and are the traditional black and white pinwheel design. There are plenty of towels and bathroom supplies.

Spacious & clean apartment in a cool neighborhood

Michael was super friendly and warmly greeted us upon our arrival at the front door. He took the time to give us some history and description of Crown Heights, including subway stations, parks, and some recommendations on nearby neighborhoods to check out. The apartment itself was very spacious and clean for the 5 of us staying. He also had an air mattress in the closet, so this apartment could comfortably fit up to 8 people. All amenities in the listing were included. Lots of good food, bars, and convenient stores within walking distance. We really enjoyed our stay at this property and neighborhood, and would definitely come back! Thanks for your hospitality, Michael!

Clean Large Sun Filled Apartment

We arrived very late and our host still greeted us happily.

We were a family of six visiting New York fort first time. Our host gave us numerous tips on things to see and do during our stay and always responded to our texts quickly.

The apartment was large enough for all of us. The place was clean and comfortable. Their were plenty of toiletries and towels.

The air conditioning kept us cool during a heat wave.

The house was a brownstone in a quaint neighborhood and it was only a few minutes to the subway.

It was definitely a bargain.

We'd stay here agin.

Convenient to Watchtower

We are a large family of eight who came to New York to visit the Watchtower and see the sights. The apartment we rented was spacious enough for all of us. Yes, there is an iron. The place was clean, airy and sunny. We could see the Empire State Building from the windows that faced the back of the building.

The apartment encompassed a complete floor and it suited our needs very well. The beds were comfortable and the sheets were 100% cotton.

The host was pleasant and helpful. T

The house is close to public transportation.

We had a great time.

Disappointed but rolled with it.

It was our first time to VRBO in NYC. We are not real familiar with the city so it ended up being not very convenient for our planned activities in Manhattan. We were also visiting Pratt Intitute in Brooklyn which is why we chose this location. This unit is in the Crown Heights area of Brooklyn. If you want a good feel for old NY this must be it. But it isnt for everyone.

That aside, the apartment and building were a bit run down. We were in the 3rd floor unit and there were some missing floor tiles in the kitchen, no door for the main bedroom, although the living room had one, and the bathroom had a strong urine smell and didnt have any electrical outlets. We had to purchase some sponges and paper towels to wash the dishes since the sponge at the sink was extremely dirty and smelled very bad. The store at the corner has a good selection of healthy foods and necessities.

The fuse blew twice when my wife used her hair dryer (in the bedroom due to no outlet in bathroom). I called the owner who told me where to reset the breaker and that we needed to turn off one or both of the window unit AC's to keep it from happening. When we arrived there were towels hanging on the bathroom door hook so we were unsure if they were clean or dirty. Fortunately there was just enough left in the shelf for us to use.

My daughters who slept in the front bedroom had trouble sleeping due to the train which runs a block and a half over. Lastly, we did not feel at all safe walking back to the apartment late at night. We actually got a hotel room in Manhattan one night because of this and the travel time back. Perhaps our expectations were too high for this part of town.

good infrastructure to metro and groceries, but not clean and poor equipment

Die Wohnung war geräumig und hatte eine verkehrsgünstige Lage. Sie müsste jedoch einmal gründlich geputzt, entrümpelt und renoviert werden. Bettwäsche und Handtücher waren okey, es fehlten jedoch Geschirrtücher. Die Schränke konnten kaum genutzt werden, da sie mit den Überresten vorheriger Mieter vollgestopft waren. Gut war die Klimaanlage und wir fühlten uns sicher im Haus.

North Crown Heights is one of Brooklyn's hottest gentrifying residential areas. It has the charms of Brownstone Townhouses and is a short walk to the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Children's Museum, Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

The house is a short distance from the Barclay Center. It is also very convenient for visiting the WatchTower.
