The home and stables were both built with all stone indigenous to the region. Both feature arched windows and slate roofs. The main floor is approximately 3,200 square feet featuring oak floors through out. The home features four bedrooms all en suite plus and a main hall vanity bathroom. There are four fireplaces(two in bedrooms) and two built with all stone. There is a beautiful sitting room off main entry with wonderful views of the site, stables and countryside. The room and fireplace provide a most comfortable setting to enjoy quiet evening at home. There is also a large den with full stone wall fireplace that provides a perfect place to read and relax.
Just a short walk into the village of Graiguenamanagh, well known for the lush beautiful countryside that surrounds it and the the 800 hundred year old Duiske Abbey, which was once Ireland's largest Cisterian place of worship. Fishing, boating and swimming at the River Barrow.
We had the trip of a lifetime in part because of our stay at this amazing country estate. The views and surrounding area were breathtakingly picturesque, and the town of Graiguenamanagh is full of charm and charming people!
My sister’s family stayed with us for a few days and they had their own wing of the house. The layout of the house is very conducive to multiple families, or kids on one side, adults on the other. The kitchen is in the center with bedrooms and bathrooms on each side. Each room in the house has amazingly beautiful views. I should also mention having a washer and dryer was a huge plus.
We visited in July/August and my children, ages 10 and 12, continue to talk about how they wish they were back in Ireland. Staying in a home gave them the freedom to get up in the morning, and run and play to their hearts content. They also fell in love with the horses, and the horses fell in love with them. The second the kids would open the door in the morning, the horses would come up to the edge of the fence, in anticipation of carrots and attention.
My family will remember this trip forever. This will be one of those trips the kids will talk about for the rest of their lives. Staying at Knockeen, made our vacation, beautiful, comfortable, and memorable. A big thank you goes out to the owners, Tim & Lisa, for sharing your home with us.
My wife and I have taken four extended (2-4 weeks) holidays over the last 4 years and traveled all over Ireland. Summer, Spring, Fall and now a Winter trip to learn the seasons. Each season and part of Ireland has its own charm, character and also characters. We have done the bigger cities and the more popular tourist locations which were great. This time we wanted a true “Irish Countryside” experience and we got it. Knockeen is located in the Southeastern part of Ireland just across the Barrow River from the village of Graiguenamanagh. Yeah, I know…tough one to pronounce for us Yanks. It’s a quick 2-minute drive or a nice 15-minute stroll to town. No exception here and brought out the best of what Ireland has to offer.
First of all, you cannot find more gracious and caring hosts/owners of such a beautiful home and property than in Lisa and Tim. Extremely easy to work with and made sure everything was taken care of during our stay. The local caretakers are amazing and quick to respond or take a call for question or need. Of course you can always just go to the local Pub O’Driscoll’s and there is a team of Irish friends ready to assist in any way. I’m serious.
Location, location, location. Take our advice and just go ahead and book it for 7-10 days…or a month or two if you can do it. The location is ideal for many reasons. #1 it is located centrally in the Southeast part of Ireland. Use it as your home base for some great day trips to the bigger cities such Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford in less than an hour drive. There are so many hidden treasures to visit along the routes too. Or, stay near home to take a swim in the river (weather permitting) in town, stroll along the pathways. Take a pretty drive over to Mullichain Café along the river near St Mullins Monastic site. Very cool and beautiful.
Of course you can always just stay at home, cozy up to one of the 4 fireplaces and read a book. Sit on the front porch with a cup of coffee in the morning, glass of wine in the evening and watch the sunset while listening to the quiet and the sheep of course. Talk about relaxing!
Highly, Highly Recommend!!!! We plan to head back, but bring family friends to share this experience with next time. Perfect for a family vacation or reunion. Slainte'
We travelled to Ireland with 4 couples total and had the best time ever! We loved Graig and all the people. Everyone was so welcoming and we enjoyed several local restaurants and all of the pubs! The house was truly spectacular with amazing views looking over the countryside. You can't help but relax the moment you pull in the driveway. The 4 bedrooms were beyond spacious and all had their own bathroom. The kitchen had all the utensils and cook wear you could need. The owners even have hair dryers and flat irons so you don't have to worry about blowing a circuit with our American ones! The horses on the property were beautiful and just added to the sense of calm and relaxation. They joyfully galloped around the field daily. We did not rent a car as we used a car service for our daily excursions but did not find it hard to get around. We met Big T (the local cab driver) on the 1st day and he happily shuttled us back up to the house from town in the evening! We had amazing weather too! We were all sad to leave.
We had a fabulous time at this gorgeous home overlooking the Irish countryside. Large kitchen and DR space was ideal for our family. With so many bedrooms, everyone had their own room and bathroom. The village was lovely with excellent pubs, the River Barrow for a nice walk and historic Duiske Abbey. Local taxi driver was very accommodating to take us around as needed. We will definitely return and would highly recommend this.
The house was a perfect location with easy access to Mt. Wolsey, Carlow, the European Club and the jewel .... Mt. Juliet. With golf in the morning, an evening pint at the local, the house is 5 star accommodation with the country estate look & feel. There is plenty of room on the inside and incredible vistas from all angles.
The village is within walking distance and everyone extremely friendly and hospitable. You need at least a week to breathe it all in - A great place to celebrate anything. We'll be back !!!
My wife and I took our two daughters and their husbands on a family vacation in Ireland. We stayed at Knockeen in Graiguenamanagh for 7 days. The house is huge and there were all of the modern appliances we needed to be comfortable for the week.
The views from the front yard and also from inside are truly awesome. We fed the horses grass over an ancient stone wall which was right by the kitchen window.
Local folk were wonderfully friendly and a little guy (who looked like a leprechaun) bought me a Guinness at O'Driscolls Pub for "bringing sunny weather"!
The owners of the house (Tim and Lisa) were a pleasure to deal with and I have recommended Knockeen to many of my friends.
Charming and very comfortable place to have a family vacation in Ireland!
Of our two week visit in Ireland, our 5 nights at Knockeen were the most memorable. The village of Graiguenamanagh (while hard to pronounce) was easily accessible and provided all the resources we needed for our stay. The setting is exquisite with incredible views of the countryside. We loved waking up in the morning to hear horses in the pasture just outside the kitchen window.
Knockeen is so comfortable and welcoming. I'm very picky about beds and bathrooms and this is top class. The added bonus was the lovely fireplaces (including the master bedroom) and comfy lounging areas. I can see how this could easily accommodate 12 guests but it felt very cozy for the two of us.
One of our favorite side trips was to Borris. The meals at the Step House Hotel were fabulous. Also loved the easy access to the River Barrow.
Overall, it was a fabulous experience!!
One of the most scenic regions of the county, Graiguenamanagh may well be considered a paradise by the outdoor enthusiast. Roughly translated as the 'Grange of the Monks', this historic setting offers fine views of the surrounding mountains, forest and river valleys, in addition to an abundance of natural wildlife. The region is particularly notable as an excellent spot for angling, and the river Barrow and Brandon Lake are both well stocked with salmon and trout.
Walking and hillclimbing are among the more popular pursuits of Graiguenamanagh area and with the South Leinster Way meandering through the lovely Barrrow Valley and traversing nearby Brandon Hill, you can enjoy fine views of the countryside can be commanded from the county's highest point .
For anyone interested in Golf Graiguenamanagh is at the centre of the South East sunshine circuit. It is within easy reach of Mount Juliet, Borris, Carlow and Enniscorthy.
