Why Steven S chose Riverview
Everyone who's stayed here has found this property to be more comfortable, more interesting, and a better value compared to staying in a hotel.
What makes this House unique
I particularly appreciate the view of the Kansas City skyline from the front porch, especially at sunset. There's hardwood and tile throughout, no carpet. There are some great neighborhood (non-chain) restaurants nearby, some of which are described in a neighborhood guide I've put together for guests.

Can't say enough good things!
First, if you choose to say here, your temp landlord is nicer than any human has a right to be. He is thoughtful, enthusiastic, and will do what needs to be done to make both your stay at the house and your time in Kansas City as wonderful as possible. When we arrived he shared the neighborhood's history, let us know of some great local places to eat, introduced us to our fabulous realtor, and invited us to an upcoming local event. He was very accomodating of our toddler, going so far as to remove one of the beds so we had room for her crib. The neighbors are also incredibly kind and will make you feel right at home.
About the house itself. It was the perfect place for us. It is a cozy place with an AMAZING view. Before the weather turned cold we would spend our evenings out on the porch watching the sun set over the city, and in the mornings seeing the sun rise behind the skyline as I was leaving for work made for a great way to start the day. Now that it's colder, we have switched to watching the sun set/rise from the living room through the picture window. It has been nicely remodeled and frankly is nicer than both the house we moved out of and the house we moved into. If only we could have bought this one.
I do have a couple of heads up, not negatives, just things to be aware of. One, there is no off-street parking and weekends during the day when yoga classes are happening across the street can be a little tight. Two, as you are coming off the interstate, Google Maps will tell you to turn left on 6th St. DO NOT DO THIS. 6th St. is a one way and doesn't go the way Google thinks it goes. Just go up to the next street, past Split Log Coffee (local place with great coffee), with Slaps BBQ (fantastic BBQ by the way) on the corner and turn left there.
Finally, I'm very glad we chose this house to be our "first place" during our transition to Kansas City. We were in an excellent location for learning our new city and were able to come home every evening and feel like we were home as opposed to being in an extended stay hotel. We will definitly be staying in touch with Steve and his familiy and feel like we have made some lifelong friends.
Lanae, you are too kind. Thank you. Let's stay in touch, please. Zuzu and I are gonna need some face time periodically ;-)
There are very few pet friendly options in KC. The owner was very accommodating for us. The home suited our needs nicely while we waited for our own home to close while relocating to the area. Owner is easy to get a hold of by email and phone & was pleasant to communicate with. The house has quite a few sleeping options and we were able to prepare meals easily with available cookware. Home has lots of character and was clean.
So disappointed. I have had such great luck with VRBO/HomeAway rentals based on prior guests reviews, but somehow this one had really good recommendations. I hate to say mean things, but I want people to book this understanding it is in a bad neighborhood. Even if there were outdoor furniture, there is no way we would go in the backyard due to the apartment overlooking the house/yard.
Also, there is nothing around, and the BBQ that is only a 5 min walk is not worth the neighborhood you walk thru. We literally kept the blinds closed when we were there and stayed away as much as possible. We drove across the bridge to KC and did anything to stay there all day, defeating the reason we booked a house in the first place. The grill is an old filthy, rusty kettle grill located outside the lower lever ('creepy cellar'). My 18 and 19 year boys were completely freaked out staying down there.
I took several pictures to show the parts of the property that are not included on VRBO, but I don't think I can upload them here. Do not rent this thinking 'charming historic', the concrete stairs and sidewalk are crumbling, the basement is creepy (tub was full of dead bugs when we arrived), and there is no usable outdoor space.
We didn't hear from the owner once after our arrival, even when I emailed him to tell him we were leaving a day early. He sounds like a nice person, but I can't believe how bad this rental was. My husband and kids insist we will stay in hotels from this trip forward.
Your feedback is important to me and you make some good points that have spurred me into action so thank you.
Your biggest issue seems to have been the neighborhood. I grew up in the city (of St. Louis) so the neighborhood in which this house is located is one I'm very comfortable in. Guests that are coming to this urban environment from the country, the suburbs, or a small town should expect a different environment here. This city, like most, is a melting pot, a mixed bag. Some blocks, some house are really amazing or interesting and super well kept; others, not so much. Though I can't single-handedly change the neighborhood I can supplement VRBOs “Book with Confidence Guarantee” with my own guarantee (now written into my Rental Agreement) to fully refund my share of the rental fee if a Guest arrives and doesn't dig the place or the neighborhood. Since finding alternate accommodations can take some time and effort, and because those Guests might well be dead tired when they get here, they can stay the first night on me, then be on their way to a hotel or other VRBO property where they will be happier. My Guests happiness is my very top priority.
I found three other items in your feedback that I can do something about and I plan to. 1.) the Weber kettle grill in the back yard needs to be cleaned after each guest's use and may need to be replaced. Got it. 2.) Bugs in the tub. I contract with a pest control company and they will hear from me. I appreciate you letting me know. 3.) “Concrete stairs and sidewalk are crumbling”. The stairs are solid slabs of limestone that are over 100 years old and yeah, they are showing their age, but I'm not sure I can bring myself to replace them despite being uneven. The sidewalks in front of the house are brick, but the concrete walkway around the front porch is cracked / crumbling. I can and will do something about that. Its been on my list for a while and it just got moved up. Thanks.
Regarding not hearing from me after your arrival, that's true; nor did I hear from you prior to you informing me that the dishwasher was loaded and that you were headed home. I had no idea you were so unhappy here. Had I known I would have done everything in my power to resolve the issues.
Kate, I wish you the very best in your future travels. Of course, there will be a significant price difference between hotel accommodations for five people (as were in your group) and value oriented VRBO properties like mine.
Great Property - just as described.
Steven was a wonderful host. Very prompt to respond and accommodating to all requests! Will definitely be back.
You should pick this property!
I stayed in this property for a month with my wife and two kids after relocating to Kansas City for a new job. We stayed here a month to give us time to find a good house to move into. This place beats the socks off of staying in a hotel, trust me. The porch has a fantastic view of downtown Kansas City like the other reviewers have said. The inside is very nice and comfortable. It comes with pretty fast internet/wifi and cable television. The upstairs bedroom is large with a comfortable bed, and the upstairs bathroom is nice with two sinks and a nice shower. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed, and the downstairs was comfortable too. There's two beds downstairs in the basement that are both comfortable and another bathroom in the basement too. It stays nice and cool in the basement. There's a backyard that backs up to woods, and my son enjoyed playing around in the yard. Parking wasn't ever an issue and we just parked on the street in front of the property. Another plus of the location is that it's about a block away from Slaps BBQ which is possibly the best barbecue in Kansas City. We ate there multiple times since we were so close. Definitely check out the burnt ends, they are excellent. The owner, Steve, was great and answered all our questions and was responsive to all our needs. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a comfortable stay in Kansas City.
It was convieiniently located. I did feel at home, loved being able to cook and there was fun activities right across the street!
