Description of our day hikes:
The Mt Auckland Climb: 6hrs return
After walking through 3 large family farms you will ascend 1000 feet through Kowhai and Kauri forest to the top of Atuanui (Mt Auckland).
Highlights include a pontoon crossing and the incredible view from the top!
The Hoteo River walk: 4-5hrs return
The duration of this walk is set on the family farm where you are staying.
Following the river upstream you will pass over farmland and beside several beautiful rapids before getting to the riparian restoration project that the family has started on the riverbank.
Highlights include a log bridge crossing and a rest spot amongst the trees at the riparian area.
We encourage families to stay but please be aware there is a stream only 50 meters from the hut. This is a hazard for small children and toddlers.
The bach is on a working farm, there are farm hazards outside of the bach section and on the walkways.
The bach is situated 10 minutes walk from the end of the road.
In dry conditions cars can get to the bach, however in wet conditions you will park your vehicle in our section and Steve will transport you and all your gear free of charge.
Extras: Linen (included); NOTE: Under Kiwi bach tradition you are expected to: Clean the house and do the dishes before you leave;
The bach itself was awesome and super clean. We brought lots of supplies but didn't need half of them as the bach was really well stocked. Also pretty spoilt having a hot shower out in the bush! The location is beautiful and wished we could've stayed longer.
This is an amazing spot. A beautiful slice of NZ paradise. We were here for just the one night, but I know we will all be back. Very comfortable, all the perks of home but in an off the grid setting. Clean, comfortable, very well equipped, it really is an outstanding location and property.
It may look a bit small in the photographs but the Pinui River Bach has all the amenities and it comfortably accommodated our group of 9 for a 3 day weekend. There is a Rinnai 6 burner with an extra gas hob and hotplate out on the deck for cooking, a good sized fridge and a huge covered deck to hide under just incase it rains. The lawn is perfect for cricket, the bunks are comfy and the river is great for a hungover dip. 10/10 thanks Steve!
This place is a great find if you're after somewhere to get away from the city with a group of friends or family. For those that have done some tramping in NZ it's just like staying at a DOC hut, but without the crowds, and with a few more features (fridge, huge bbq, hot shower). There's also nobody around to complain about noise if you're up late having a few drinks by the fire as we certainly did. Very functional with everything you need to have a good time in an awesome setting. Cheers!
