About Ali El Safy

I grew up in Cairo, lived in France during my teens and 20s, and then moved to California, where I live today. I always dreamed of owning an apartment in Paris.

Ali El Safy purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Ali El Safy chose 18th Arrondissement Montmartre

I've traveled extensively throughout France during the last 20 years, and most of my family still lives in France. Paris, and particularly Montmartre, has always been my favorite place.

What makes this apartment unique

The beautiful building from the 1900s caught my eye. The apartment needed work, but I saw it's potential and spent 6 months doing a complete remodel. I love the way the sunlight floods the apartment, and that you get a view of the Eiffel tower from the living room - if you stand in just the right spot :-)

A bright beautiful Parisian retreat

  • 5 of 5

Just off the well-trod tourist tracks of Montmartre is this little slice of sunlit heaven. Ali's place is clean, sunny, spacious, beautifully and simply decorated with everything you'd need for a comfortable stay in Paris. I was there for a month and wanted for nothing.

The front room feels gorgeous as soon as you step in--it's recently and intelligently renovated as the original architectural details have been preserved (molded ceilings, fireplace, hardwood floors). Sunlight streams in, and the foldout coach and rollaway bed--it comfortably accommodates 5 people--were very comfortable.

In the bedroom, there's a great comfortable double bed, huge closet, windows overlooking an interior courtyard, large en suite bathroom with washer/dryer and excellent water pressure.

Ali's background in restaurants shows as his kitchen is fully appointed with cookware, servingware, coffee maker, microwave, oven, actual knives, and some great cookbooks.

Fatima, the concierge and building caretaker, is kind and helpful and speaks English and French, and probably other languages too. Check-in was a breeze; once I texted her, she was at the door to let me in.

The neighborhood is a bit quieter than up the hill toward Sacre Coeur, so if you're looking for tourist traps right outside your door, this isn't the place for you. However, if you want to feel like a real Parisian while you're here, then this is just the ticket. Plus, it's less than a 5-minute walk to get to R Damremont, R Caulaincourt or R Lepic where you'll find a wide variety of restaurants, shops, patissieries, boulangeries, etc. And there are a few neighborhood bistros/brasseries just down the street. You're also well situated for the metro, with a bus stop just down the block, and access to three metro lines (13, 12, 2) nearby. Rue Carpeaux, being on the edge of two neighborhoods also feels more diverse than other nearby neighborhoods, which I appreciated.

Highly recommended.

Real Paris Charmer!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved our week stay at the very French Maison Ferrari. It's light and attractive, quiet yet just a short walk from the bars and restaurants that thrive on Rue des Abesses and Rue Lepic. We've been to Paris many times and usually stay at the Marais section but Montmartre is a great new-to-us alternative. The word for Maison Ferrari and Montmarte as a whole is "chairmant." The building is a 19th century charmer with a small elevator. The 4th floor apartment has wonderful views of Parisien rooftops...and the beds, linens, towels, everything is first class! So easy to score this flat very highly on all measures!

Perfect place in Montmartre

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully renovated Apartment. Has all you need for a short or long-term stay. I was here for three weeks, and did not want to go home. Supermarket, restaurants, bakery, playground 1 minute away. You can walk everywhere or take the bis which goes directly to the Louvre. Gate St. Lazare is close by as well, so you can have an easy connection to explore the villages outside Paris, and also see the Normandie.

This is my second time staying in this place and I have to say this is the best for your buck! This time I took my 3 year old daughter and Its centered location it the best, the manager is always there if you need anything. The whole apartment is nice and new, extremely cleaned! Will Definitely stay there again, and will surely recommend it to all my family and friends. Ali the owner was extremely nice, flexible and accommodating.

Owner Did Not Follow Through

  • 2 of 5

The property is well designed and lovely, but overpriced considering I could have stayed in the Marais for less. I am a frequent traveler to Paris.

The owner was enthusiastic at the start, but I was uncomfortable when he met me at the airport to give me the apartment keys and also gave me a gift (stuffed animal) that he wanted me to give to the woman checking me into the apartment in Paris. I really shouldn't have accepted it as I have no idea what it was. My mistake.

When we arrived, there was no WiFi or television or telephone service. Not sure if he paid his bill? In fact, there was no WiFi/tv/telephone for the entire stay. The owner told me to sign up for Orange WiFi and he would reimburse me. I've been home for 2 weeks and I have not heard from him nor have I received reimbursement. For the price of the apartment, I should have been accommodated, or at the least, I should have been reimbursed.

Disappointed because his enthusiasm cleared shifted; he was energetic and inviting at the start and not so much afterwards.

Oh well. I would recommend you stay where you're going to get treated well from start to finish, no matter what.

Just read this review to my husband, who agrees completely.

Owner's Response: I am sorry that Tracey was dissatisfied. I did meet her at the airport before her departure to give her keys to the apartment, and asked if she would be willing to take a stuffed animal as a gift for my property manager's daughter. In retrospect, perhaps that was an inappropriate request (however innocent) but if Tracey had shown any hesitation at the time, I would have simply mailed the gift. The cable TV/internet service for the entire building was out during Tracey's stay and France Telecom was unable to resolve the issue promptly. France Telecom is unfortunately well-known for their slow response to repairs. Since there was nothing I could to do fix the WiFi, I offered to reimburse Tracey for the purchase of two mobile WiFi cards, for herself and her husband. I requested that Tracey let me know when she was back in the US, so we could work out the reimbursement details. However, despite my sending Tracey 4 emails over a 2 week period requesting info about the cost of the WiFi cards or how I could reimburse her, she has refused to give me this information. I try my best to satisfy the requests of all my guests, as you can see from the remainder of my reviews.
