Sunset Cottage is a beautiful secluded beach house that is a home away from home. This 1 bedroom, 1 bath cottage sits on a 1/2 mile of sandy beach. Enjoy Exuma's beautiful clear waters during the day and its emaculate sunsets right from the patio. Located on the waters edge on Hoopers Bay.
Long nature walks or view and swim with the green turtles that call the bay it's home.
It's great for couples wanting a romantic setting or quiet time,
Or to just take in the natural beauty of nature that surrounds the cottage.
Ideally located near grocery stores, banks, boat rentals, restaurants and at night time you will find llive entertainment just 15 minutes away.
Hi the Property is owned by Peter Burrows who built this beach house for his family to enjoy during the hot summer days. The main house is just a half mile away on the same property. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!
Peter Burrows purchased this cottage in 1995
We were fortunate to stay at Sunset Cottage for one week. We picked this place based on the positive reviews that we read and we are so glad we did. We had the best time ever! The location of the house is great! We loved waking up to the ocean at our feet and hearing the waves at night. There is enough of beach to have a great time. There is a kayak to go out on. Hoopers Bay is gorgeous! The sunsets are fabulous. The water is so clear and there are so many friendly turtles. The house is only a short drive into town (5-10 mins). As amazing as the house and location is, our favorite part of the trip was Peter!!! He helped us get pizza the first night because most places were closed due to the holiday. We booked a tour with him and he took us to all of the best spots! (swimming pigs, dive sites, iguana island, etc.). It was such an amazing tour and great time. We got to hang out with Peter a few times and he told us all about the island. If you visit get to know him because he's a great fun guy!
I have nothing negative to say about sunset cottage. We will definitely be coming back and staying here again!
My husband and I spent 8 days at Sunset Cottage. Peter met us at the side of the road as it was dark and we were lost. Also, we were a little tired from flying all day and it was a little strange to be driving on the opposite side of the road. The place was imprecibly clean and stocked with everything we needed. It was perfect for the two of us. The beach is quite literally outside the back door. You can hear the waves at night it was so peaceful.
Peter gives tours so it was very convenient. We snorkelled the Thunderball Grotto, swam with pigs, turtles, stingrays, visitited iguana island and saw many sharks.
Georgetown is only a few minutes by car. There you will find The Straw Market, Shopping, a wonderful cafe that we kept going back to that served really good food and delicious coffee. You will also find other restaurants and things to do.
We went to have dinner at Catch a Fire, which had great food and fantastic atomosphere. It was right on the water and we saw some sharks swimming as we ate.
Peter was there from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Made us feel at home. So much so that we didn't want to leave.
Words cannot express the great vibe and kindness of people on this island. Everyone was friendly and welcoming.
If you are going to visit the island, this is where you want to stay to have the full experience of Exuma. Which truly is Paradise on Earth.
Thanks so much Peter!
My husband and I t spent 8 days in March on this gorgeous Island for our 31st anniversary. We met Peter at night at a local store on the main road to help us find the cottage. Peter showed us a few things in the cottage and said he would be back in the morning to finish as it was rainy and dark. Well 8 days went by with no sight of him. We did not need him but I guess it was a good thing. The beach was completely ruined due to Hurricane Joaquin no ones fault of course. Huge slabs of cement and limestone everywhere. A large sandbag thing was in the water surrounding the area in front of the cottage doing nothing but making it impossible to enter the water. Hoopers Bay is beautiful so we just walked across the neighbors lawn to get into the water or even walk the beach. The cottage was nice but at high tide the water would slap against the cement wall of the porch and actually shake the cottage. We meet some great younger people from the larger house Peter has up the road that share our beach well what was left of it. They sat with us as the beach area was very small and in 1 area. I have a trip planned this March yes again to Hoopers Bay but in another Villa with a large beach area and where I can enter the water. Peter was not an accommodating host to us(no idea why either?) and in 15 years of renting villas this was our worst experience between the beach and the host.
This is a continuation from the previous review as it was to long for 1.
There was maybe 10 people the entire week that walked by the cottage to see what was past it but being at the end it was quite private and secluded once we rectified the villa issue.
Checkout is 1 pm as per this site, but they are in there just after 11 am and starting to clean things for the next guests so be prepared to have everything packed and out of the way for 11. We weren’t getting picked up until 1 so just started packing around 10 and then had to rush around and pack everything so they could get in. If they need longer to clean the place, then checkout should be earlier.
The place was clean when we arrived and everything worked and we had no issues with the cottage.
There is AC in the living room and bedroom and it works very well. The cottage is the perfect size and the addition of the porch on the front is great.
The sunsets were beautiful every night we were there, don’t go to Catch a Fire as you will get the same sunset there so save your money on taxis and food.
Smitty’s is about a 15 min walk or just over a km one way away. We also found Prime Island Meats and Deli which is a bit further but we found the selection and pricing much better than Smitty’s.
Swimming with the turtles 2 min from the cottage was amazing and watching them swim out front while we are relaxing was also amazing.
Georgetown is only 5 km away so a good walk or short bike ride into town.
Definitely visit the Fish Fry as you are heading towards Gerogetown, it’s about 3.5 km away. Lots of different places to try the local cuisine.
More of a note than anything, but the bugs or little sand flies around are awful and will bite your ankles like no tomorrow so make sure you bring bug spray or you will be eaten alive. Not sure if it is like this all year round or just the time we were there (beginning of April) but something to keep in mind.
Overall we had a very relaxing time and enjoyed our stay at the Sunset Cottage and would recommend it.
We booked this place to get away from it all and have a no kids vacation and it is definitely in the middle of nowhere at the end of the bay. Overall a great place to relax and visit. Here is our pros and cons from our experience:
Cons from our experience:
Don was supposed to pick us up at the airport (Peter’s preferred taxi) but he was nowhere to be found so we had to get another taxi. Not the end of the world but time wasted and when the grocery store closes at 5:30 and you arrive at 3:30 time is not in our favour but it all worked out.
The outdoor pictures are not a good representation of the property. We found out there was a big storm in October 2015 and it ruined a lot of it. The big sand bag exploded and it still laying around on the beach and depending on the waves you need to watch your footing getting in so it doesn’t catch you. The grassy area in the picture to the left of house is no longer there and there are a bunch of sand bags on the right side to prevent erosion. The beach extended a great distance to the right but all you see is limestone now because of mother nature. The beach is MUCH smaller than the pictures show so that was a bit of a surprise. It definitely didn't ruin the trip but you should be aware of it.
Peter owns a villa at the top of the hill which can been seen from the cottage and the secluded private beach that you might expect is shared with the renters from there. On our trip it was a family of 7, 2 adults and 5 kids that were renting it. When you are woken up from your nap to kids screaming (they were just being kids and having fun, nothing out of the ordinary for kids) in the water, it wasn’t the secluded we had hoped for. The villa guests had setup all their chairs and stuff no more than 20 ft from the cottage. We did mention this to Peter and he let us know that no beach was private in the Bahamas and the beach was shared with the villa which the ad doesn’t state. He does own a beach on the other side of his brother’s place (which is right beside the cottage and much closer than the pictures portray) so he had some chairs and an umbrella set up for the villa guests down there and it was much better. Here’s hoping he keeps this in place and has the villa guests use that beach and you can have the area in front of the cottage.
Review continued because it wouldn't let me post it all in one.
We went to Exuma for our ten year anniversary and wanted to rent a house right on the beach. I don't think you can find a house any closer to the beach then this cottage. Hoppers bay is beautiful and watching the sea turtles every day was a joy. We got to swim with them one day. The house was just the right size for two. We appreciated having the washer and dryer and being able to use the kayaks.
Exuma is such a wonderful island and the beaches are the best we have seen. We rented a car and it was well worth having. We traveled up and down the island finding different beaches and eateries.
Things can be hard to find as road signs are minimal, but when we arrived we met Peter and he showed us the way to the cottage and then a quick tour of the house and property. He is very nice and easy to deal with. Wish we would have been able to do a boat tour with him, but timing didn't work out.
Such a nice trip and we hope to go back one day.
Directions to house. Travel south from round about at airport which will be a right turn, you follow road pass a nice strip of beach
With nice homes along the way for about 5 miles or so. You will pass a tennis court on a curve and go up a hill where you see the ocean once on top of the hill about a half mile from this point you will pass The Bank of The Bahamas on your right will be 2 big blue buildings which is a plaza on the right. About a 1/2 mile from here on your right you will see the sign Sunset Cottages take that left and follow the signs. Peter's cell is 357-0390. If you see a Grocery Store, Smitty's that mean you pass the turn and then need to go back a few hundred feet then the turn will be on your right. Hope this is clear!
